Miguel de Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) was a Spanish writer whose work included plays, poetry, short stories, and novels. Although much of the details of his life are a mystery, his experiences as both a soldier and as a slave in captivity are well documented; these events served as subject matter for his best-known work, Don Quixote (1605) as well as many of his short stories. Although Cervantes reached a degree of literary fame during his lifetime, he never became financially prosperous; yet his work is considered among the most influential in the development of world literature.

JOSÉ MARÍA GONZÁLEZ DE MENDOZA

La atareada multitud de eruditos que consagraron sus desvelos a clarificar lo obscuro del Quijote halla su contrapartida en el inquieto pelotón de los enquijotados, como donosamente llamaba don Francisco Rodríguez Marín a quienes emplearon su actividad en obscurecer lo claro del admirable libro. Todos pueden tomar por lema de sus trabajos —o de sus desvaríos— palabras del propio Don Quijote: Y así debe de ser mi historia, que tendrá necesidad de comento para entenderla.

La entendieron a tuertas aquellos que gustan de buscarle cinco pies al gato —que no tres: éstos se los encuentra cualquiera—. Inficionólos la locura del hidalgo y dieron por aciertos de la perspicacia lo que era descarrío de la imaginación. No se crea que ello fuese novedad de tiempos cercanos al nuestro; mucho más hemos de remontarnos, hasta mediado el siglo XVIII, cuando un linajudo inglés, Charles Jarvis, dio a la estampa en 1742 una traducción de la sabrosa novela —decía en 1872 don Francisco María Tubino, en su estudio intitulado Cervantes y el Quijote— y se obstinó en atribuir a Cervantes las ideas morales y religiosas que él mismo profesaba. Pretendía descubrir en aquel libro —informaba a su vez don Leopoldo Rius en su excelente Bibliografía crítica de las obras de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, publicada de 1895 a 1904— alusiones y sátiras demagógicas y anticlericales.

El esoterismo, esto es, la inclinación a ver un significado oculto en todo aquello que Cervantes refiere, adquirió vigor y lozanía a lo largo del sigo XIX y proliferó como plantas silvestres en terreno baldío.

Difieren sus adeptos en las modalidades de la interpretación, pero coinciden en tener al insigne alcalaíno por hombre de ideas avanzadas, con desdén de cuanto acerca de su piedad nos dicen los biógrafos. Esto equivale a motejarle de hipócrita que, so capa de entretener al lector con el relato de las burlescas aventuras de un loco, atacó en forma encubierta, bien embozado, a las más altas y respetables instituciones de su tiempo. ¡Curiosa manera de elogiarle! Deja ello ver de qué pie cojean los esoteristas. Algunos alcanzaron la celebridad; de tal manera la desmesura y complicación de sus teorías sorprendieron.

Don Adolfo Saldías, en Cervantes y el Quijote, publicado en 1893 en Buenos Aires, sostuvo que el insigne escritor fue un demócrata convencido, y que Don Quijote representa la aristocracia conservadora y Sancho la democracia pura, dice don Eduardo Benot en su Estudio acerca de Cervantes y el Quijote, editado en 1905.

Don Miguel Cortacero y Velasco puso en varios libros los frutos de sus lucubraciones de las que bastará a dar idea el título, prometedor, de uno de ellos: Cervantes y el Evangelio; o el Simbolismo del Quijote. Se publicó en Madrid, en 1915.

En 1916, don Juan Francisco de la Jara y Sánchez de Molina, que adoptó el arábigo seudónimo de Hamete Aben Xarah el Beturaní, añadió a la segunda parte del Quijote un capítulo encaminado a desentrañar el misterio que él creía vislumbrar en el hombre de Tirteafuera. Sabido es que así se llama el pueblo donde nació el doctor Pedro Recio de Agüero, médico gubernamental en la Ínsula Barataria. El libro en que el comentarista expuso sus opiniones lleva el instructivo título de Estudio histórico-topográfico de El ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, deducido de su lectura y aplicando las leyendas de importancia: tres sucesos y las consejas populares de la región beturania, con conocimiento exacto del terreno que describió Cervantes, donde la tradición conserva los nombres que justifican los pasajes más culminantes de esta fantástica obra. Hay, como se ve, equivalencia de longitud entre ese título de cincuenta y cinco palabras y el nombre y seudónimo del prolijo autor. Aclararemos que Beturania o Beturia es el antiguo nombre de la región española comprendida entre los ríos Guadiana y Guadalquivir.

A don Benigno Pallol le cupo la turbia gloria de superar en extravagancia a todos los demás esoteristas. Bajo el seudónimo de Polinous publicó en 1893 una descabellada Interpretación del Quijote, en el que ve una invectiva contra los libros sagrados y sus derivaciones, dice Rius. Según Polinous, Dulcinea representa a España, Maritornes a la Iglesia, Don Quijote y Sancho al pueblo en lucha contra el absolutismo de los monarcas y contra la opresión dogmática sobre la conciencia. ¡Nada menos!

BRILLIANT. I went to see the windmills in Spain after I read the book and stayed in Cervantes place of birth for a month. The Spanish are very proud of Cervantes. Spanish children know quite a lot about this author and book and can critique the novel's concepts in an intelligent way.

I trudged through the first part of the book which focused on Don Quixote and his "adventures" without any enjoyment. I liked the second part better, but it featured other characters. I own but have not yet read Sir Thomas Malory's La Morte d'Arthur. I think a comparison of the two, having read Malory first would have been better. We'll see.

I've read the part one (of two) so far, and it doesn't seem likely that I'll bother with part two. It starts out very promising, with an unexpectedly modern sense of humor. But all the good bits (and all the famous bits) are in the first few hundred pages. Then the book just keeps going for no apparent reason, eventually devolving into a collection of novellas and short stories that have no connection to Don Quixote.

This translation by John Rutherford is reading pleasure. Always humourous if occasionally a little uncomfortable from a modern perspective.Through the stories and the mad adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are glimpsed the history, social conditions and attitudes of the time, something missing from my school history lessons (from an English perspective).

Quite long, but the variety of Don Quixote exploits kept my attention. My only complaint is that most of the "interpolated" stories were love stories. I would have liked more variety. Similar to serial novels such as Tom Jones which keep the reader in suspense until the end.

I really didn't enjoy the book. The chapters were to short. It wasn't my sense of humour. I didn't finish it. I just couldn't. I just felt sorry for Don Quixote. He was clearly mad and Sancho was just annoying

I had some mixed feelings about Don Quixote. At times, I was very wrapped up in the story and found it excellent. At other times, I found it too ridiculous or slow paced and would then put the book down for months without any urge to go back to it. Cervantes, nonetheless, has moments of pure genius and my overall feeling is positive.

I know this is a classic of great literature but I cannot finish it. I have read one quarter of the book and I just don't like Don Quixote. I find him to be foolish, stubborn and dangerous. Is this supposed to be a comedy???not sure but I'm giving up.

This book remains one of the finest ever written. The characters are so real that you feel a real connection with them that spans across the centuries. Sancho Panza's unending loyalty despite Quixote's delusions makes him one of the best fictional creations ever. That such a book of such length can remain readable, humorous and enjoyable so many years later (provided you have a good translation) speaks volumes for Cervantes's genius. No praise is high enough for a masterpiece such as this.

Although I tried to like Don Quixote, it reminded me too much of the slap-stick humor of Gilbert & Sullivan or the 3 Stooges. Worth reading once to understand references found in other material, but definitely not one of my favorites.

One of the 5 greatest (or most important) novels ever written... however, the old "crazy-old-man-attacks-someone-he-thinks-is-someone-else-and-gets-his-butt-kicked-and recovers-for-a-week-then-repeat, got a bit old after 940 pages.Sancho's govenorship was probably my favorite in the whole shebang.This bad boy was read in the following places: home, work, Starbucks, Spain, France, Italy, Newark Airport (twice), my car, and probably a couple other places I'm forgetting.

A great tale about a spanish Knight and his friend in which they embark in all sorts of fun and drama. A wonderful tale filled with imagination and laughter. A tale for children everywhere to read.

I liked this book better the first time I read it, but maybe that was because I didn't feel quite as rushed the first time around. It's easier for a teen to find time to wade through this very long book, than it is for an adult. It's still a reasonably enjoyable read, though.

A nice readable version to get you ready for the original. Illustrations are by Walter Crane. I found this tale of a man pursuing life as he sees it, not as others see it, both touching and funny.

Somewhat harder to stick with than I had presumed, because Cervantes is playing with metafiction and similar situations come round again and again, as Don Q and other players change and grow. But worth the time. I think this is one book that is better studied than read casually.

This book was excellent. I have made it my goal this summer to work on reading all of the classics that I did not read in high school, or college. Cervantes shows a good blend of historical reality and fantasy that is amazing for a writer of his time. Loved it.

Cervantes was in need of an editor. There is much to appreciate about this book. It is down right, laugh out loud funny at times. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are both great characters it's just that each adventure starts sounding the same after awhile.
