Ann Morgan apoyó el mango de la brocha en sus labios y admiró su obra. Era cierto que la segunda n del rotulo en el que se leía Ann Morgan – detective privada estaba un poco torcida, pero, en general, estaba satisfecha con el resultado.

Ann se dio cuenta de que una ola de tristeza la había inundado cuando borró el nombre de Trevor Bowman de la puerta de la oficina. Mantendría las palabras Máxima Discreción como recordatorio de su antiguo empleador, para que le permitiera mantener sus altos estándares.

A causa de la guerra, la clientela de Ann era escasa, por lo que ocupaba el tiempo decorando su oficina con flores de temporada y toques de pintura que aportaran frescura. Una ramita de acebo decoraba la parte superior de su archivador, aunque negó la participación del muérdago en la decoración, por si algún posible cliente malinterpretara esa escena y llegara a la conclusión equivocada.
