¿Para mí, Daddy? For me, Daddy?

This is a story of complete victory in Jesus and a tale told in the eyes of an infant as she watches her parents wake up every day and try to live.

    *****

I was still inside the belly. Like Jonas, it was warm, but my abode was not a big fish but the breathing swimming womb of my mama. She was so young, and we were waiting in line for a long time to board the airplane. I could feel the tiredness in her legs, and the Spirit airplane was delayed. We would be stopping in Ft. Lauderdale, the same exact airport where almost nine months later, on February, Saturday the fourteenth, 2009, we would return, but I am getting ahead of myself. My daddy had dropped her off at LaGuardia while he went back to his job at QCC, which stands for Queensborough Community College. He worked in the admissions office, helping students sign up for school. Just my mom and I were going to Lima, Peru, to visit my grandma Ely. She did not even know I was in Mama’s belly yet. Let’s just say July 2008 was going to be a month full of surprises for many people.

You see, my parents were married in a funny sort of fashion. My dad was a dreamer. Well, he still is a dreamer, and when he saw my mom walk into the admissions office, his creative mind started spinning right away. He liked her, and she was so cute, and the ravishing black luxurious hair of my mom completely hypnotized him. Before my dad turned forty on April 17, 2006, they got married in Kew Gardens Civil Court. Can you keep a secret? I think you can say my mom needed a green card; she was only eighteen years old. Just so you can follow the story with all the details. So, when my mom took that plane with me in her belly, she was twenty-one years old.

Upon arriving in the land of the Incas, I was restless. It had been a long flight, and Mama was exhausted. She went straight to sleep when she arrived at the home where she grew up, and she had news to tell her parents. The marriage that was just supposed to have been created for certain needs had now produced a feeling of love, and the baby girl was uncomfortably waiting to come out. Four months before she was due. Now it gets complicated.

It was a story only a little girl could tell, and that is why I am asking you to see how to well I write it. The doctors in Peru could not foresee or imagine that such a young and healthy woman like my Mama could be ill. But I wanted to come out, and nothing was going to stop me. I’m all heart, and when that tiny baby came out at San Bartolome Hospital in Lima on Avenida Alfonzo Ugarte, well then, my home became a small incubator, and this is where the details come to light.

My grandma Ely spent the whole day with Pito (grandpa) worried. Now she had a granddaughter and a daughter in Lima with her but in the land of premature babies. My dad was in New York City, and when he received the news that I was born, he gave thanks to God. He believes very much by faith and grace in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And from the moment I came into this world, he was reassured that I was going to go all the way. This did not stop him from taking action, and in the coming months, he would make at least five trips to Peru. I’m getting a little ahead. You see, I’m excited to be telling this story after ten years. I will be ten years old this July 30, and after a decade, it’s time to write the tale.

My mother was now twenty-two years old. And I was only two days old, but my heart was beating, so with all greetings and meetings taking place, I was taking and making my stand in the land of the Incas. They fed me with a tiny dropper, small amounts of milk, and my mom slept in the hospital. She wanted to take a shower so badly because it had been more than five days since her last bath, and she needed water to revive her, but I was all she could think of. My dad was coming that weekend, and she wanted to receive him at the airport with my grandma. My grandma was not too happy. Because all the time, she was worried about her daughter and now her granddaughter too. But he was my dad, and he had to arrive. He got a flight from LaGuardia to Atlanta and then a connection to Lima, Peru.

He always tells the story that it was the peak of summer when everyone is traveling, and he was only able to arrive in Lima because my brother, Julian, worked for Delta Airlines. And he was able to place my father on standby. It worked this
