In this book you will find two novellas in English paired with their Spanish translations.

Due to the nature of translating and the differences between languages, the translations will not be an exact match to each other. Sometimes the wording between the two languages will be very similar, but in other places the wording will be quite different. You can use this book as a learning tool to comparatively study English and Spanish, learning from both the differences and the similarities.

One way to use this book is to take different colored pencils to circle verbs or underline nouns and compare each paragraph to its counterpart. Where words and sentences are not an exact translation to each other, you can write notes and definitions on the lines provided in the margins to further your learning experience.

The stories contained in this volume are Liberty – a Rapunzel story and Rivalry – a Cinderella story.

once upon a time...

The land was ruled by a corrupt king and his evil wife, the queen. They were hated by all, but still the people celebrated the birth of their daughter, the princess Rapunzel. Long ago it had been told that their child would break the cycle of despair which her family before her had brought upon the land.

...un país, que estaba gobernado por un rey corrupto y su malvada esposa, la reina. Eran detestados por todos. Sin embargo, el pueblo celebró el nacimiento de su hija, la princesa Rapunzel. Mucho tiempo atrás, se había dicho que el primogénito rompería el ciclo de desesperanza que había traído esta familia al reino.

The princess Rapunzel was a beauty to behold with golden hair and sapphire eyes, and she was a beacon of hope to everyone who believed the prophecy was true. With little else to hope for, most of the people believed. Rapunzel would one day save the kingdom and rule benevolently, unlike her predecessors.

La princesa Rapunzel era una delicia para los ojos. Tenía cabellos dorados y ojos azules como dos zafiros. Era una luz de esperanza para todos los que creían en la profecía. A pesar de las pocas razones para tener fe, la mayoría de la gente creía. Rapunzel salvaría algún día al reinado y, a diferencia de sus predecesores, gobernaría con benevolencia.

When Rapunzel was three months of age, the king and queen held a banquet in her honor. The people of the land came to present their gifts for the young princess, in part because they desired to but primarily because the king required it. He laughed a hearty laugh whenever an unsuitable gift was presented and then sent that unfortunate individual to the dungeons for a day.

Cuando Rapunzel cumplió tres meses de vida, el rey y la reina hicieron un banquete en su honor. La gente del pueblo se acercó a ofrecer sus regalos para la joven princesa, en parte porque ellos lo deseaban, pero principalmente porque el rey lo había exigido. Cada vez que le presentaban un regalo inapropiado, el rey lanzaba una carcajada y enviaba al desafortunado a los calabozos durante un día.

As the banquet neared an end, a robed woman with a dark hood over her face stood in the back of the room. Her voice traveled throughout the room as she declared that she too had a gift for the young princess.

Cuando el banquete estaba llegando a su fin, una mujer vestida con una capa oscura con capucha sobre su cabeza se puso de pie en el fondo del salón. Su voz atravesó la habitación cuando declaró que ella también tenía un regalo para la joven princesa.

Step forward to deliver your gift, the king commanded.

No sir, she said. For my gift is a curse.

A hush came over the crowd. The king raised his hands to call on his royal guards, but the woman continued before he gave his order.

El silencio se apoderó de la multitud. El rey levantó sus manos para llamar a sus guardias reales, pero la mujer continuó antes de que él diera la orden.

My gift is a curse, she repeated, Not against the young princess but against any who should attempt to cause her harm. Whosoever tries to hurt Rapunzel in any way shall have the same pains and discomforts inflicted upon his body and soul.

—Mi regalo es una maldición —repitió ella—, no en contra de la joven princesa sino en contra de cualquiera que intente causarle daño. Cualquiera que intente herir a Rapunzel en cualquier modo, tendrá el mismo dolor y malestar infligidos en su cuerpo y en su alma.

The crowd roared up in shouts of praise for her proclamation. Their belief in the prophecy was all the hope they had, and knowing that Rapunzel was now protected meant a great deal to all of them. As the crowd made their noise, the woman quietly disappeared from the room.

La multitud estalló en gritos de agradecimiento y alabanzas por su proclama. Creían que la profecía era la única esperanza que tenían. Y saber que Rapunzel ahora estaba protegida, era de buen augurio para todos ellos. En medio del bullicio de la multitud, la mujer se alejó silenciosamente de la habitación.

Madame Gothel returned home to find her daughter Gisele outside in their sunflower field. The silly girl was never in bed when she was supposed to be. It was late at night; the full moon lit up the sky and cast a bluish glow on their many rows of sunflowers. Madame Gothel called Gisele inside for a chat.

Madame Gothel regresó a su hogar al encuentro de su hija Gisele que se encontraba fuera, en el campo de girasoles. Era una niña ingenua que nunca estaba en cama cuando se suponía que debía. Era muy tarde en la noche y la luna llena iluminaba el cielo con un brillo azulado sobre las hileras de girasoles. Madame Gothel llamó a Giselle para que entre a la casa a conversar.

What is it, mother?

— ¿Qué ocurre mamá?

Gisele was a cheerful young girl of fifteen with long black hair which she loved to braid. She skipped into the kitchen and began to pour her mother a cup of tea.

Gisele era una joven alegre de quince años con una larga cabellera negra que amaba trenzar. Entró bailando a la cocina y sirvió una taza de té para su madre.

Gisele dear, I have a request for you, Madame Gothel began. The queen will not long wish to care for the princess herself. She is too selfish a woman to continue tending her child. I want you to go to the palace first thing tomorrow and offer your services as a nanny to Rapunzel.

—Gisele querida, tengo un pedido para ti —comenzó a decir Madame Gothel. —A la reina no le importa cuidar ella misma a la princesa. Es una mujer demasiado egoísta para atender a su hija. Quiero que vayas al palacio mañana a primera hora de la mañana a ofrecer tus servicios de niñera de Rapunzel.

The topic threw Gisele off. She’d expected reprimanding for being out so late. Instead her mother was suggesting something huge.

El tema sorprendió a Gisele. Ella esperaba que la madre la reprendiera por estar fuera tan tarde. En cambio, le estaba proponiendo algo enorme.

A nanny? she said. But mother, I’ve never been a nanny to anyone.  I have no experience with children!

—¿Ser niñera? —dijo Gisele—-. Pero mamá, yo nunca he sido niñera de nadie. ¡No tengo experiencia con niños!

Nonsense, Gisele. You have plenty of experience. After all, what more experience could you need than the fact that you’ve been a child yourself? And your brother, Lucien? He is only six and you watch over him well. You have all the experience you need.

—Tonterías, Gisele. Tienes muchísima experiencia. Después de todo, ¿qué más experiencias puedes necesitar que el hecho de haber sido tú misma una niña? ¿Y tu hermano, Lucien? Él solo tiene seis años y tú lo cuidas muy bien. Tienes toda la experiencia que necesitas.

Yes, but mother, what do I know about caring for an infant?

—Sí mamá, pero, ¿Qué puedo saber sobre el cuidado de un bebé?

Trust me, Gisele. It will come naturally to you, she said. She took a sip of her tea. You know the prophecy, Gisele. Rapunzel is the child who will return peace to this land; she must be protected. I want you to be the one protecting her. There’s no better way for me to be sure of her safety.

—Créeme Gisele. Lo aprenderás naturalmente —dijo. Tomó un sorbo de su te. —Conoces la profecía, Gisele. Rapunzel es la niña que devolverá la paz a esta tierra; ella debe ser protegida. Yo quiero que seas tú quien la proteja. Para mí, no existe mejor manera de estar segura de su integridad.

Gisele hung her head. Yes, mother, she said. But why should the queen wish to hire me? I’m afraid she will laugh me out of the palace. And what will I do about school?

Gisele bajó la cabeza. —Sí, mamá —dijo.— Pero ¿por qué la reina querría contratarme? Temo que se reirá de mí y me echará del palacio. Y ¿qué haré con respecto a la escuela?

I’ll see to it that you’re able to take your schoolwork with you to the palace. You can work on it during Her Highness’s naps and any other downtime you happen to come across. As for the queen, Her Majesty will have a dream tonight warning her that any neglect toward Rapunzel is the same as intentionally harming her. The king does not believe in prophecy and curses, but Her Majesty does. Her fear of the curse will drive her to seek someone else to care for the child while she tends to herself. It will be a full-time job, Gisele, but I know you can handle it.

—Me ocuparé de que puedas llevarte la tarea de la escuela contigo al palacio. Puedes hacerla durante las siestas de su Alteza o en cualquier otro tiempo libre que se presente. Y con respecto a la reina, Su Majestad tendrá un sueño esta noche advirtiéndole que cualquier negligencia en relación a Rapunzel es igual a herirla intencionalmente. El rey no cree en profecías y maldiciones, pero la reina sí. Su miedo por la maldición la llevará a buscar a alguien más que cuide de su hija mientras que ella se cuida a sí misma. Será un trabajo de tiempo completo, Gisele, pero sé que puedes manejarlo.

A curse? Gisele asked. She sat down. What curse?

—¿Una maldición? —Preguntó Gisele mientras se sentaba—. ¿Qué maldición?

A curse was placed at the banquet tonight that whosoever causes harm or intends to cause harm to the young Rapunzel will experience the same.

—Se lanzó una maldición esta noche durante el banquete para que cualquiera que causara daño o intentara causar daño a la joven Rapunzel experimente lo mismo.

Gisele narrowed her eyes. Did you place the curse, mother?

Gisele entrecerró sus ojos. —¿Fuiste tú quien lanzó la maldición, mamá?

Madame Gothel laughed it off and didn’t answer her question.  So anyway, how was school, dear?

Madame Gothel se rio pero no respondió a la pregunta.  —Entonces,... cuéntame,... ¿cómo estuvo la escuela, querida?

It went well, Gisele told her. And you know that boy I like—the one I told you about? He complimented me on my hair today. I was so excited that he noticed me.

—Estuvo bien —le respondió Gisele—. Y ¿sabes que el chico que me gusta, ese del que te conté? Me felicitó hoy por mi pelo. ¡Me emocionó tanto que se hubiera fijado en mí!

Keep eating sunflower seeds each day and you’ll have the most beautiful, healthiest hair in all the kingdom. You already do, Gisele, and everyone knows it. It’s because of the sunflower seeds. That field has such rich soil; anything that grows there will do wonders for those who eat of it.

—Continúa comiendo semillas de girasol todos los días y tendrás el cabello más hermoso y saludable de todo el reino. Ya lo tienes Gisele, y todos lo sabemos. Es por las semillas de girasol. Este campo tiene un suelo tan rico que todo lo que crece aquí produce maravillas en aquellos que comen de él.

Gisele looked down to her feet. MaryAnn said it is because you are a witch.

Gisele bajó la mirada. —Mary Ann dijo que eso era porque tú eres una bruja.

Madame Gothel’s eyes turned sharp. You will not dare to call me that, child.

Los ojos de Madame Gothel se afinaron. —¡No te atrevas a llamarme así, niña!

I’m sorry mother. It wasn’t me; it was MaryAnn.  But...you know, I always have felt those sunflowers had something magical about them.

—Lo siento mamá. No fui yo, fue Mary Ann.  Pero... tú sabes, siempre he sentido que los girasoles tenían algo mágico en ellos.

They do not, Gisele. That is utter nonsense. They are sunflower seeds, plain and simple.

—No es así, Gisele. Eso no tiene sentido. Son semillas de girasol, así de simple.

Gisele took a deep breath. Mother, why is it that you never explain to me how you do what you do? How are you able to tell the future and place curses as you do?

Gisele respiró profundamente. —Madre, ¿por qué es que tú nunca me explicas cómo haces lo que haces? ¿Cómo eres capaz de predecir el futuro y lanzar maldiciones como lo haces?

That is not for you to know, Gisele. Now do not ask me about it again. Go check on your brother and then prepare for tomorrow. I expect you to go straight to the palace in the morning. I shall visit the school to explain your absence and arrange for your studies to continue at the palace.

—No es algo que debas saber, Gisele. Y no vuelvas a preguntarme sobre eso. Vete a controlar a tu hermano y luego prepárate para mañana. Espero que en la mañana vayas directamente al palacio. Yo iré a la escuela a explicar tu ausencia y a hacer los arreglos para que tus estudios continúen en el palacio.

Yes mother. Good night.

—Si mamá. Buenas noches.

Good night, Gisele.

—Buenas noches, Gisele.

Madame Gothel hung up her black hooded cloak and went to bed.

Madame Gothel colgó su capa negra con capucha y se fue a la cama.

Gisele studied the dirt road as she walked. She was completely unsure of herself and this entire plan. Her mother had told her to arrive and simply state the words ‘I am here to be Princess Rapunzel’s nanny.’ Gisele was sure she would be laughed at and thrown out of the palace. Or worse. The king and queen were not known for their kindness. If her words angered them enough, she could end up in the dungeon for this.

Gisele caminaba lentamente observando el camino de tierra. Estaba completamente insegura de sí misma y del plan. Su madre le había dicho que llegara al palacio y simplemente dijera las palabras Estoy aquí para ser la niñera de Rapunzel. Gisele estaba segura de que sería expulsada del palacio en medio de carcajadas. O peor aún. El rey y la reina no eran conocidos por su amabilidad. Si sus palabras los enfurecía lo suficiente, podría terminar en el calabozo por esto.

The dirt road led to a cobblestone one which took her through the bulk of the town, and at long last she stood before the palace gate. Here goes, she whispered to herself. She rang the large bell and two of the palace guards came to the gate.

El sendero de tierra la llevó hasta una calle adoquinada que la condujo atravesando gran parte de la ciudad, hasta que se detuvo finalmente frente a la puerta del palacio. —Aquí vamos —murmuró para sí misma. Hizo sonar una enorme campana y dos de los guardias del palacio se acercaron a la puerta.

State your purpose.

—Explique su propósito.

Gisele took a deep breath. I am here to be Princess Rapunzel’s nanny, she said.

Gisele respiró profundamente. —Estoy aquí para ser la niñera de la princesa Rapunzel —dijo.

The palace guards looked to one another, a strange look of awe upon their faces.

Los guardias de palacio se miraron el uno al otro con una extraña expresión de asombro en sus rostros.

Come in, they said. Come in, and they led her toward the throne room.

—Adelante —dijeron—. Adelante. —Y la condujeron hacia la sala del trono.

As they walked, the one leaned over and whispered to the other:

Has it been announced already?

—¿Se ha anunciado ya?

And the other answered:

No, it has not yet been announced outside the palace walls.

The two men would not look at her as Gisele followed them into the palace and down the hall to the throne room. The three of them stopped outside the door. Only one of the men entered; Gisele and the other of the two guards waited in the hall. Then the doors opened.

Ninguno de los hombres miraba a Gisele mientras ella los seguía por el palacio y por el pasillo hacia la sala del trono. Los tres se detuvieron en la puerta. Sólo uno de los hombres entró; Gisele y otro de los guardias esperaban en el pasillo. A continuación, las puertas se abrieron.

The queen and king sat upon their thrones. Light shone down through the windows, giving the room a romantic air to it, but Gisele knew better. There was nothing romantic about this room where the king and queen wreaked havoc upon the kingdom.

Come closer, child, the queen said as Gisele stepped into the light. I have heard that you wish to be a nanny for Rapunzel.

Gisele curtsied, careful not to make eye contact with the queen and thus show disrespect. It is as you say, she said.

What is your name, child?

—¿Cuál es tu nombre, hija?

My name is Gisele Gothel, Your Majesty.

—Mi nombre es Gisele Gothel, Su Majestad.

And who told you that I was looking for a nanny to look after Rapunzel?

—¿Y quién te dijo que yo estaba buscando una niñera para cuidar de Rapunzel?

Gisele swallowed hard. Say exactly what mother told you to say, she reminded herself. No more, no less.

Gisele tragó saliva. Debía decir exactamente lo que la madre le dijo, se recordó. Ni una palabra más ni una menos.

I met a woman on my way to school, Your Majesty. She said to me, ‘Look, the queen has had a dream last night, and she will be seeking a nanny for her child. Go and offer yourself to look after Rapunzel.’ She gave me this to show you. Gisele pulled out the hooded cloak and held it up. The king and queen recognized it immediately from the night before. They looked to one another.

—Conocí a una mujer en mi camino a la escuela, Su Majestad. Ella me dijo: Mira, la reina ha tenido un sueño anoche, y está en la búsqueda de una niñera para su hija. Ve y ofrécete para cuidar a Rapunzel. Ella me dio esto para demostrarlo.  —Gisele sacó la capa con capucha y la levantó. El rey y la reina la reconocieron de inmediato de la noche anterior. Se miraron el uno al otro.

The curse, the king whispered.

—La maldición —susurró el rey.

My dream, the queen said.

—Mi sueño —dijo la reina.

They whispered to one another and then looked once more to Gisele. Have you any experience with children? the king asked.

Susurraban entre sí y luego miraron una vez más a Gisele. —¿Tienes alguna experiencia con niños? —Preguntó el rey.

I have helped raise my baby brother, Gisele answered. Since our father passed away, I have been a helper to my mother in raising him.

—He ayudado a criar mi hermano pequeño —respondió Gisele. Desde que nuestro padre falleció, he sido la ayudante a mi madre para cuidarlo.

And you are aware of the curse? the queen asked.

—¿Y tú eres consciente de la maldición? —Preguntó la reina.

Gisele nodded.

Gisele asintió.

The king took a deep breath. If the one who made the curse is the one who sent you, then I think Rapunzel shall be in good hands to be in your care.

El rey suspiró profundamente. —Si quien hizo la maldición es quien te ha enviado, entonces creo que Rapunzel estará en buenas manos a tu cuidado.

Gisele let her shoulders drop in relief. She didn’t feel nearly so tense anymore. She bowed her head and curtsied. Thank you, Your Majesty. When shall I start?

Gisele aflojó sus hombros aliviada. Ya no se sentía tensa. Inclinó la cabeza e hizo una reverencia. —Gracias, Su Majestad. ¿Cuándo voy a empezar?

Today, the queen said. Yes, today. Princess Rapunzel is in her bedroom. You may care for her starting now. When she needs to be fed you may bring her to me. Aside from that, I do not wish to see her.

—Ahora mismo —dijo la reina—. Sí hoy. La princesa Rapunzel está en su dormitorio. Tú puedes cuidar de ella a partir de ahora. Cuando ella necesite ser alimentada puedes traérmela. Más allá de eso, no quiero verla.

I do not wish to see her. The words rang loud in Gisele’s ears, and though she’d not yet met the young princess, already she hurt for her.

No quiero verla. Las palabras sonaron fuerte en los oídos de Gisele, y a pesar de que aún no había conocido a la joven princesa, ya se sentía angustiada por ella.

Gisele hid the hurt from her face and thanked the king and queen for the job.

Gisele ocultó el dolor en su rostro y dio las gracias al rey y la reina por el trabajo.

A maid arrived and offered to show Gisele to Rapunzel’s room. Gisele followed the maid in silence at first, but the queen’s harsh words still rang in her ears. I do not wish to see her. How could the queen say such a thing about her own infant daughter? As they continued down the hallway, the child’s cries became audible. Gisele cringed.

Una criada llegó y se ofreció a mostrar la habitación de Rapunzel a Gisele. Al principio, Gisele siguió a la criada en silencio, pero las duras palabras de la reina aún resonaban en sus oídos. No quiero verla. ¿Cómo podía la reina decir tal cosa acerca de su propia hija? A medida que se acercaban por el pasillo, los gritos de la niña se fueron haciendo audibles. Gisele se estremeció.

Who has cared for the child until now? Gisele asked.

The maid looked sheepishly away. Her Majesty likes a spotless palace, she said. Now and then one of us would take a break to check on Rapunzel, but aside from that there is no time for us to care for her. Rapunzel stays in her room until Her Majesty feels like checking on her.

La criada se veía tremendamente avergonzada. —A Su Majestad le gusta un palacio impecable —dijo. De vez en cuando uno de nosotros se ha tomado un descanso para ver a Rapunzel, pero aparte de eso no hay tiempo para que nosotros cuidemos de ella. Rapunzel se queda en su habitación hasta que Su Majestad se siente con deseos de verla.

The maid looked at Gisele now. I am glad Her Majesty has agreed to hire someone to watch Rapunzel and meet her needs. We are kept too busy to tend to her properly.

La criada miró a Gisele. —Estoy contenta de que Su Majestad se haya comprometido a contratar a alguien para cuidar a Rapunzel y satisfacer sus necesidades. Nos mantienen demasiado ocupados como para atenderla adecuadamente.

Gisele felt tears come to her eyes, but she held them back. She was led to a bedroom with more square feet than the house she lived in. It was decorated in pinks and purples, and the gifts from the townspeople sat in a pile to the side of the room. Rapunzel lay in her bassinet, crying and alone. Gisele immediately felt compassion for the child, and she went to her to hold her.

Gisele sintió que las lágrimas brotaban de sus ojos, pero las contuvo. Entraron en una habitación más grande que la casa en la que ella vivía. Estaba decorada en tonos rosas y morados. Los regalos de la gente del pueblo estaban en una pila en una esquina de la habitación. Rapunzel estaba en su cuna, llorando y sola.
