INTRODUCTION

Whether you’re vacationing, visiting on business, studying or living in Spain, this is the phrasebook that will give you more of what you need to enjoy tourism, make friends, carry on basic conversations, have fun, cope with day-to-day living, and even pursue romance. Aside from covering a much broader spectrum of subjects than other Spanish phrasebooks, it gives you 2–6 times more phrases to work with.

Something else you’ll like about this phrasebook is that it’s quick and easy to find what you want to say. Phrases and terms are grouped under their key words, and the key words are in alphabetical order (not in the usual categories of other phrasebooks that often leave you guessing what’s where). Got a phrase or term in mind? Go to it’s key word, the same as you would in a dictionary, and chances are good that you’ll find it there.

Because the phrases and vocabulary in this book cover a wide spectrum of interests, activities and situations, there is a rich supply of material for people of all ages, male or female, married or single. We sincerely hope that, whoever you are, whatever your age, you’ll be able to put this phrasebook to the purposes for which it’s intended – enjoying tourism, making friends, socializing, engaging in sports, and coping with everyday situations in Spain.

How to Use the Phrasebook

Main words

All phrases and terms in the phrasebook are grouped under the "main words, which they contain. For example, the phrase We’ll call you later. is listed under the main word call."

Some phrases appear in the dictionary more than once, because they contain more than one important main word. For example, the phrase "Could you show me around the city? is listed once under the main word city and a second time under show."

In front of each main word there is a period, which must be typed when searching for the word.

Parts of speech

Each listed main word is followed by its abbreviated part of speech, such as n for noun, vt for verb transitive, etc. (See the page "Abbreviations Used in the Dictionary")

Tilde substituting main word

For all term entries, a tilde ~ substitutes for the main word of the term. For example, under the main word cake, "wedding cake" is listed as wedding ~. Similarly, "call back under the main word call" is given as ~ back.

Slash = or

Throughout the phrasebook a slash / is used to mean "or, i.e., that you can choose one or the other. The choices are numbered, in parentheses, both on the English side and the Spanish side. Hence, under the key word hair", the term " (1,2) curly ~ cabello (1) rizado / (2) ondulado can be said as either cabello rizado or "cabello ondulado». Sometimes the choices differ slightly in meaning, but mostly they are synonyms.

The same is true of parts of phrases that are numbered and separated by a slash /. For example, in the phrase "I didn’t mean to hurt (1) you. / (2) your feelings. you can choose to say "I didn’t mean to hurt you. No quise lastimarte." or "I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. No quise herir tus sentimientos." Occasionally, for clarity, such divisions are followed by three dots prior to a word or words common to both divisions.

Parentheses = optional

Words or parts of phrases (not italicized in English) in parentheses are optional. In the phrase "No one can match you (in any way). Nadie se puede igualar contigo (de ninguna manera).", you could include or omit the words (in any way) in both English and Spanish. In a very few cases, an English word in parentheses is optional in English, but has no counterpart in Spanish: the sentence in Spanish will be the same either way.

Feminine and plural forms of words

For Spanish adjectives, which have masculine and feminine forms, only the endings of the latter are given, preceded by a hyphen.

In phrases, the feminine form of a word appears in italics in parentheses following the italicized masculine form. The same is true for masculine plural and feminine plural words.

In terms, both the masculine and feminine forms are italicized, indicating that one can replace the other..

Polite and familiar forms of words

In phrases, the polite form of pronouns and verbs appears in the open, italicized, and the familiar form that can replace it is given in parentheses, in italics. For more explanation of polite and familiar forms, see Appendix 2: Spanish Grammar.

Spanish pronunciation

The basic rules of Spanish pronunciation may be found in the Alphabet. With a couple of exceptions, letters are pronounced as they look.

Spanish Usage

In using this phrasebook, please bear in mind that the Spanish phrases in many cases represent the best translation we could provide of the English phrases and, although they will be easily understood by a Spanish person, they are not necessarily what Spanish men or women themselves would think of to say for those particular ideas.
