    Preface

The story is about two young men, between the ages of nineteen and twenty, who ventured to look for their first formal job. The place where they went to apply for a job was a land transportation company, and they were hired; but to their bad luck, they fell into the wrong hands since the owner of the transportation company disguised the company to do illicit business, which was drug trafficking and money laundering.

After some time, the two young men were subjected to threats and blackmail to get involved in that dirty business. The criminals actually achieved their goal, and the young men began to transport drugs and money from the sale of drugs from one city to another until they ended up being discovered by the authorities and, therefore, were imprisoned, both serving different sentences. Rudy Blanco was given ten years in prison, and Paul Valdez got the worst part. He was given thirty years, of which he served a third of the total, about twenty-odd years. Both served their sentences in different prisons, but what was similar was that they both lived very hard experiences, and at the same time, they soaked up the experiences of the other prisoners.

It is recommended that you read this story. It contains so many anecdotes and, in particular, the experience of young Paul Valdez, why he was given a longer sentence. Can you imagine? He began his ordeal in the prime of his youth, he was not yet married, and perhaps he did not have children. While he was serving his sentence, his parents died; and when he got out, he was practically a man, almost fifty years old. But even so, he felt lucky because life gave him a second chance to rebuild his life since many of the prisoners do not have the same luck. If they are not killed inside the prison, they would come out with health problems, both mental and physical.

Undoubtedly, these are situations that ordinary people who have never set foot in a prison do not have the slightest idea of how hard and complicated such situations are. Just by imagining that for all those years of confinement, they will never taste a real and succulent meal nor will they have a loving encounter with a woman during that time, just to mention a couple of limitations.

It is really depressing seen from any angle. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to alert every human being, be it an adult man or woman, young people, or teenagers in different social strata, races, creeds, etc. We are all exposed to being involved, and we all have to be aware of it. We are all exposed to being involved at some stage of our lives, either voluntarily or involuntarily in dark situations, where we have to face justice. The result is more painful than imagined, which is equal to saying that we wasted a part of our lives because of wrong decisions or for being deceived by unscrupulous people. But the good news is that the person who reads this story will have a clearer vision to protect themselves and not fall into the critical and devastating experience of incarceration.

Read the anecdotes lived by the inmates, which are several stories that they lived in their own flesh. Each of the prisoners appears in this documentary and kindly puts their grain of sand, telling their story of why they were imprisoned, many unjustly, and others were more aware of their bad acts. But they still lived the same experience of imprisonment, not a pleasant one. So the invitation is open for you to read this book, which is rather a mirror, a reflection to see the mistakes of others and not live them in the flesh. In other words, the idea is to bring this message to you so that you never see yourself behind bars and, therefore, keep all your life in freedom, which is priceless.

    Author and writer, Mauricio Lopez.

    Thank you.

    Chapter 1

It was a great day for two young men named Rudy Blanco and Paul Valdez. They were graduating from high school and were ready to go to college, and then they shared it with their parents and friends.

It was known that young people organize their parties already at night at a classmate’s house, so before nightfall, at Paul’s house, his mother, Mrs. Maria Valdez, shouted to him from the kitchen, Hurry up, Paul, your friend Rudy has been waiting for you in the parking lot for a while now! They are going to be late for their graduation party.

One moment please, I’m almost done getting ready.

Suddenly, Paul came out of his room, very well dressed in his best clothes, and said to his mother, Give me a blessing, Mom.

How handsome, my boy! May God and the Virgin take care of you.

And as some mothers are accustomed to making the sign of the cross, she made it on her son’s little face.

Paul made an angry gesture when he heard his mother tell him that he was a boy, and he soon protested, Don’t call me a boy anymore. I’m already a man.

Oh, sorry, yes, it’s true. My boy is already a man.

    See? You said it again.

She ended up being amused and replied, May God take care of you.

    Amen, replied Paul.

Outside, Rudy honked his horn and added, You look like a woman getting ready. Get in the car, we’re late.

Here I come, stop crying. Hello, Paul greeted Estefany, Rudy’s girlfriend.

How are you, Paul? the girl replied.

His friend Rudy spoke. If you only knew the lecture I got from my dad before he lent me his car, but the important thing is that we are on our way to the party. I’m sure we are going to have a wonderful time, aren’t we, my friend?

Yes, we will, but behave yourself because knowing you, I hope you’re not going to make a fool of yourself.

Yeah, a man of much experience, Rudy said to him in a mocking way.

And it was a logical sense for their ages that they laughed and made fun of each other, and the three began to laugh at their own crazy talk.

Rudy drove to the house of Roberto Ardiles, another one of his classmates, where the long-awaited high school graduation party was to be held and where the rest of his classmates were waiting for them. That house, which was more like a mansion, looked like a place for all those young people to give free rein to their energies and emotions because Roberto’s parents had gone out of town, so that residence was at their complete disposal.

My friends! shouted the owner of the house. Look at this, by pulling my strings, I managed to buy all this alcoholic beverage, and there is even food to throw up. Therefore, everybody, dance until the body can take it, eat, and drink without limit.

Everyone began to shout at the same time. That scene looked like it was going to become almost like a replica of Sodom and Gomorrah.

    Chapter 2

In the early morning, already drunker than at his trial, Rudy went out to the patio of the house to get some fresh air, and suddenly Aurora approached him, another companion who was also intoxicated and was consequently acting out of context.

Just like that, she made a pass at Rudy. Hello, handsome boy, how are you?

I’m fine, thank you, just taking a breath of fresh air.

It’s a beautiful early morning, isn’t it? Look at the starry sky, and you look great too. You know, I never dared to confess that you always caught my attention. I like you as a man, and what better time than now to express my feelings openly? I’m attracted to you more than you can imagine, and you’d have to be blind not to have noticed it.

And since Rudy wasn’t in his logical, right mind either due to the influence of alcohol, he played along. Consciously or not, the thing was, he even became a poet bringing down the sky and the stars. Although a bit clumsy, what could one expect from his condition? And he continued speaking, You look spectacular tonight too, and yes, I had noticed it, but as you know, I have my girlfriend.

Don’t spoil this moment by mentioning your girlfriend to me because I’m not interested in that topic. Let’s talk about us, please.

Yes, okay, I won’t mention her to you anymore, and speaking personally, you know I feel very good with your company. You’re good with compliments.

It’s good that we are understanding each other, and if you are smart, you would notice where I’m going.

Of course, I understand, I know what you mean.

So in what you are thinking or what we are thinking, why don’t we put it into practice? I say to be more explicit and go to the actions.

Just like that, you tell me without giving me anesthesia? And they both laughed.

The young lady added, Yes, that easy and practical, but I’m not proposing marriage either. I just want to spend a nice and intense time with you, and what better way to do it than in this moment and in this place, in the middle of these trees and garden? Look at that greener and fresher grass. It’s propitious to give us privacy entirely and have only the crickets for witness and to begin to have more affinity? Come here, come closer, and feel my tits.

Rudy, neither slow nor lazy, turned into an octopus, and the girl named Aurora pounced on him and kissed him intensely. Rudy did not resist, and little by little, the caresses were intensifying, therefore, heating up the mood to such an extent that the girl began to grope him all over his body. He reciprocated in the same way and even more going beyond the limits, putting his hand everywhere.

Suddenly they heard a strange noise, which aroused some fear and lack of concentration and something that put them on alert.

They suspended the activity, then the girl said to him, Come with me to a bedroom at the back of the house. I know all the corners of this place. Besides, I am a good friend of Roberto’s. In case he discovers us, he would not tell us anything.

Do you really think what we are doing is right? Rudy emphasized since the pause they made due to the interruption because of the noise they heard, the concentration was lost and, in a certain way, the excitement as well.

But the girl who was determined to have her way returned to the charge and took him by the hand, and they ran toward the room. Once there, the girl resumed the seduction and whispered sweet words in his ear and, at the same time, dirty words to get him back on track and make him forget and completely ignore the previous scare.

Squeeze my buttocks, touch and kiss my breasts. They are firm, aren’t they?

And she put her breasts out in the open, and Rudy got excited like a spark near some flammable material. Figuratively speaking, he became like a foal in jealousy, jumping over the fetlocks and taking them with his chest to get into his mare’s corral. Enduring kicks and bites to satiate his lowest instincts, that’s how irrational Rudy was acting.

Without thinking about it anymore, they immediately began to take off their clothes but forgot to lock the door. Without thinking about anything or anyone, they began to have sex wildly. Suddenly, when they were in the middle of the act, the door opened very slowly. The one who was investigating was nothing more and nothing less than Estefany, Rudy’s girlfriend. She crept out and watched the scene for a few seconds and said nothing. She just closed the door again without making the slightest noise and walked to the party hall to look for Paul. She was with her eyes clouded and with a lump in her throat.

She said to the young man, I need to get out of here because I’m suffocating in this place.

Are you all right? Paul asked.

No, I really feel so bad, maybe like never before. Now I’ll tell you why.

Once in the courtyard, Estefany asked Paul, just like that, Hey, Paul, how do you think I look? Do you think I’m ugly?

You ask me that? Of course, you’re very pretty! And why do you ask that question?

"You know, I just caught Rudy in a room making love with Aurora’s slippery, not to say the right word, that’s a P."

How so? I can’t believe it!

    Just as you hear it.

That’s unacceptable, but I’m not the one to make any kind of comment against them. They’re both my friends, so it’s best to remain neutral. But that action on Rudy’s part, I really don’t approve it.

I don’t understand why this jerk did this to me, how I hate him! I hate him!

Paul just listened to everything Estefany was saying about his friend Rudy, and deep down, he knew that she was more than right. The best he could do for her in that situation was to comfort her, and the only and best thing he could think of was to tell her that he was going to take her home to avoid the confrontation with Rudy.

So he told her, I know you are hurt, and if you allow me to give you a suggestion, I think it is not the right time to complain to Rudy for what you say you witnessed. One, because you are very hurt and you are only going to insult him and, of course, rightly so. But you don’t know how he is going to react, more because of the influence of alcohol. You may say things to each other that you will regret later. Better another day when you are calmer and he is in his five senses, then talk well but with a cool head and put things in their place. And the rest only you will know in what terms they are. I think it is the most sensible thing to do.

Wise words, Paul. You are absolutely right. I am not going to solve anything now, and it is really not worth it to fall so low, to throw a tantrum in front of all my colleagues, but I am very clear that it is over between him and me and among other things. You know what, Paul? Rudy gave me the keys to his father’s car. Take me in it, and then you can come back.

    All right, let’s go then.

Paul took Estefany to his house and went back to the party while Rudy, after having finished screwing with that girl, continued having fun. He continued having a lot of fun.

He was so drunk that once Paul entered the house again, he started to look for him. Once Paul looked at Rudy, he approached him and told him, Let’s get out of here, Rudy. Let’s get out of here. Let’s get out of here, Rudy. Let’s get out of here. Let’s get out of here, Rudy. Let’s get out of here. Let’s get out of here, Rudy. You are very bad, and if you like, you can stay at my house.

No, please take me to mine, and yes, I really think I have had too much to drink, and Estefany? Where is she?

Paul did not want to disturb the honeycomb and just told him, Looking at you in the condition you are in, she preferred to leave, or rather I took her home in your car.

Thank you very much for that detail, my friend, and I think that yes, she was right because I was wrong putting trailer plates even behind. Right, brother?

Paul made no more comments. He took his friend Rudy to his house. He put him in his room without his parents noticing the condition their son was in, and Paul took Rudy’s bicycle. That way, he went back home.

    Chapter 3

A week later, the phone rang at Paul’s house, and Mrs. Maria, Paul’s mother, answered and said, Well, who is this?

    Hello, Mrs. Maria, it’s Rudy.

Hello, Rudy, how are you doing?

Well. Thank you. Is Paul there?

    Yes, I’ll put him on.

Thank you, and nice to say hello to you.

Paulito, you have a call from your friend Rudy, Mrs. Maria called for her son.

Paul ran and picked up the phone. What happened, Rudy? How are you?

Around here, more or less, but I’m worried. I don’t know what’s going on with Estefany. She’s not answering the phone, and I went to look for her at her house, and she’s not answering.

    No, not at all?

I imagine that she is angry and with good reason. I know that I neglected her because I abused alcoholic beverages the day of the party, and I just hope that her anger will pass. Among other things, I am also calling you because I need you to come to my house. I have something very important to tell you.

    Tell me what it is.

Don’t be anxious. Here, I’ll explain what it’s about.

All right, I’ll be there soon, just let me finish what my dad told me to do.

All right, I’ll see you here.

Thirty minutes later, Paul finished mowing the lawn of their house and said to his mother, Can I have permission to go to Rudy’s house?

Did you finish what your dad asked you to do?

    Yes, I’m done, Mom.

Well, that’s fine, but come back before your father gets home from work. You see, he doesn’t like you hanging around in the street.

Don’t worry, Mom, I’ll be back before five in the afternoon.

    Well, be careful.

    Yes, Mom, I love you.

He gave her a kiss on the cheek and then took his bicycle and started pedaling with the energy that characterizes a boy of his age. And when he least expected it, he was already at Rudy’s house.

    Chapter 4

Once that pair of young men were together at Rudy’s house, Rudy was waiting for him in the yard, bouncing a basketball.

Paul greeted him, What happened, Rudy? Here I am. What is it so important that you want to tell me?

Let’s go to the park. We’ll talk more calmly there.

Oh, how scary, mystery man! replied Paul.

They both rode their bicycles to the neighborhood park. Once there, they sat down on a bench, and Rudy started talking.

You know, I’m happy because I met a very interesting person, and he told me that he can give us a job in his company. I say in plural because I told him about you too. What do you think?

    "What do you think?"

He told me to go to his business to fill out the job application. What do you say? Are you up for it?

And what kind of job is it, and how did you meet him?

How or through whom I met him—that doesn’t matter. It would take too long to explain. It’s like a scale because the owner of the company is a friend of a friend of mine, and that’s where the thing comes from, and you don’t know who introduced me to him, so forget that curiosity. The important thing is the job, and that’s what it’s all about.

    So it’s a transportation company.

    Exactly.

But I understand that for that kind of work, they use trucks, and therefore, a commercial license is required. Isn’t that right?

He was explaining to me that in his company, they drive smaller types of vehicles. They are diesel, not gasoline, but their trucks do not require a commercial license but the regular one, the one we have. So he vaguely mentioned to me that what they used for transportation are trucks, but they are not commercial. He also mentioned to me that what they transport are small mechanical parts, that is, spare parts, the kind they use to repair machines in the refineries.

And he didn’t tell you if they go out of town?

We didn’t talk much about it. That’s why I’m inviting you to come and see him, and I think it’s time to start looking for a job, don’t you think? Because now that we are going to college, we are going to have to help our parents with the expenses. So how about if we go one of these days to see that person? Here, I have his business card with me. It says here that the company is called Fast and On Time. Who knows if he will hire us. It will be exciting to drive those trucks, don’t you think? And make some money.

What’s the name of the guy who owns the company?

That was the first thing I had to tell you, wasn’t it? Sorry, I got excited, but anyway, his name is Alejandro Alvez. He looks like a nice guy, as they say, cool. And to cheer you up, he told me that he needs personnel even if they have no experience. And just like in our case, he said that we qualify because the only thing required is to have a regular driver’s license, not a commercial one, and we both have one.

It’s interesting to me, and it’s not that I’m pessimistic or negative, but now that we’re finishing high school and we’re going to go to college, we’re not going to have the full time to dedicate it to a job like that, which I’m sure requires full time.

Yes, I am clear on that, but what if he accepts us for part-time work?

Well, I agree, and it would be great to earn some money. As you say, we have to get a job, even if it is part-time, to help our parents with the school expenses because we already know that it will be expensive to study.

Of course, then let me call Mr. Alvez, and once I reach an agreement with him, I will let you know so we can go.

    Okay.

Once you meet him, you will surely like that person, you’ll see. The truth is that I dream of saving some money to buy a convertible sports car. I can already see myself taking the girls to the beach, to the movies, going to the malls, in short.

You, as always, think only of fun. You are hopeless, Rudy.

You already look like an old man. It seems to me that you skipped the stage of youth and suddenly jumped into old age.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, funny guy. Well, let me know, in any case. We have plenty of time now that we’re out of school, but we’ll have to ride the bus because my dad won’t lend me his car.

Well, yes. Mine won’t lend me his car either.

Well, I’m going now because I have to be home before my father gets home from work.

I know your father, he’s very strict.

    Well, I’ll see you.

Take care of yourself and take a bath.

I’ll see you later, little clown! answered Paul, and he left in a hurry on his bicycle.

    Chapter 5

For some reason, Rudy did not answer the phone from Alejandro Alvez, and Rudy was very interested and excited about the proposal of the supposed driving job. He let two more weeks go by since he imagined that this character was very busy; but when he called him once more, and in the least expected moment he could contact him, they agreed that the young men would come to his company to talk about the job position. So the boys took the bus one very early morning. Once at the business of the guy, they greeted him very politely.

Good morning, Mr. Alejandro. Do you remember me? I’m Rudy, the boy.

Alejandro interrupted him, adding, Ah yes, I remember, you are the young man who introduced me to Elián López.

Exactly, that’s me, and I’m telling you that Elián went to study in New York.

Really? Look, that’s all? And he didn’t even say goodbye to me, but anyway, as for you, in one way or another, I had you in mind. And who is he?

He is Paul Valdez, my best friend, and he is also interested in the job.

It’s my pleasure, sir, Paul replied, and the guy shook hands with both of them.

I think it’s excellent that you have made the decision to come to see me. Tell me you have every intention of working, right?

Sure, Mr. Alejandro, we just have a small problem.

Let’s see, what is this small problem?

As we are about to enter the university, we won’t have the full time to dedicate to a job.

Calm down, guys, there is a solution for everything, except for death, right?

    Well, that’s true.

    "Then tell me, what
