In 1994, the year of the World Soccer Cup here in the United States, I had the opportunity to meet who for many (not for others) is the greatest professional soccer player the world has ever seen: Edson Arantes do Nascimento. In this event organized by the NCAA to present awards to the best college and university players the great Pele would affirm: “every professional soccer player has in mind an amateur player that was better than him when they both started the dream.” But what requires becoming a professional? Why is it that out of 1000 players that try, only 1 fulfills that dream? Could it be talent? Discipline? Character? Fortune? Connections? Destiny? Or perhaps is a combination of all of these factors? However, what happens with those players with so much talent that stayed half way? How an amateur soccer player is perceived when he demonstrates week by week that he deserved to be part of the chosen one? AMATEUR Yo Soy Futbol tries to pay tribute to those players, coaches and local teams that put all their passion and talent for over 50 years in our community. This beautiful sport, our beloved soccer, is now a vital part of our Latino identity here in the United States.

En 1994, año de la Copa Mundial de Fútbol aquí en Los Estados Unidos, tuve la oportunidad de conocer al que para muchos (para otros no) es el más grande futbolista profesional que ha dado el mundo: Edsón Arantes do Nascimento. En este evento organizado por la NCAA para otorgar premios a los mejores futbolistas colegiales y universitarios el gran Pelé afirmaría que todo jugador profesional tiene en su mente un jugador amateur que fue mejor que él cuando ambos empezaron el sueño. ¿Pero en qué consiste llegar a ser un profesional? ¿Por qué de 1,000 jugadores que lo intentan sólo 1 lo logra? ¿Será el talento? ¿La disciplina? ¿El carácter? ¿La fortuna? ¿Las palancas? ¿El destino? ¿O será una combinación de todos estos factores? Bueno, la verdad sea dicha, todo futbolista, quien se precie de serlo, algún día soñó con haber sido profesional. ¿Pero qué pasa con aquellos jugadores con talento que se quedaron a la mitad del camino? ¿Cómo se percibe al futbolista amateur que demostró semana tras semana que él también debía de haber formado parte de los consagrados? Así pues, este libro trata de rendir homenaje a aquellos futbolistas, entrenadores y equipos locales que pusieron toda su pasión y talento a lo largo de 50 años en nuestra comunidad. Este lindo deporte, nuestro fútbol o el juego del hombre como lo bautizaría el comentarista mexicano Ángel Fernández es ahora parte vital de nuestra identidad latina aquí en Los Estados Unidos.

Amigo futbolista empecemos el calentamiento del partido: ¿Alguna vez te has preguntado quién habrá sido el primer equipo de fútbol que se formó aquí en el condado de Monterey? ¿Quiénes habrán sido los primeros jugadores que iniciaron la cultura del fútbol en nuestro valle? ¿Crees que John Steinbeck habría visto jugar fútbol a algún paisano cuando escribió Tortilla Flat? ¿Te has imaginado a los pachucos burlando y metiendo goles? ¿Qué tal si entre los braceros (1942-1964) estaba algún portero? ¿Un gran defensa? ¿Un mediocampista inteligente? ¿Un delantero habilidoso? ¿Un entrenador exigente? Te pregunto esto porque no sé si sabrás que la pelota del fútbol tiene rodando más de 70 años dentro de nuestra comunidad latina. El juego del hombre ha sido sinónimo de nuestra identidad migrante a lo largo de siete décadas y hoy es el deporte más popular aquí en nuestro condado.

Yo no sé cómo sientas tú el fútbol lector mío pero te aseguro que todos los jugadores que han jugado este lindo deporte han sentido la misma pasión y amor a lo largo de los años. Sólo espero que entiendas y no me lo tomes a mal, que el fútbol es tan complejo que hablar o jugar fútbol se parece tanto que llegan a confundirnos. De hecho, la gran mayoría de las personas confunden la pasión con el talento. Mira te explico: La pasión implica defender (con palabras) tus emociones y sentimientos que inspiran el amor que sientes por el fútbol. Sin embargo, el talento (acciones/jugadas) te lleva a ser genialidades dentro de la cancha y así obtener el amor o el odio de tus compañeros, adversarios o fanáticos. Con esto quiero decir que hablar de fútbol y jugar fútbol son dos cosas diferentes que nos confunden muy a menudo pero que disfrutamos enormemente. Así pues, si al leer este libro encuentras algo que no estés de acuerdo, estás en todo tu derecho de anular este comentario, sí, anularlo, como un árbitro anula un gol aunque sea legítimo.

Soccer friend let’s start the game’s warm-up: Have you ever wondered who was the first soccer team that was formed here in Monterey County? Who were the first players to start our soccer culture in our valley? Do you think John Steinbeck would have seen paisanos play soccer when he wrote Tortilla Flat? Have you imagined Chicano zoot-suiters dribbling and scoring goals? What if among the braceros (1942-1964) that came from México there was a goalkeeper? A great defender? A smart midfielder? A skilled striker? A demanding coach? I ask you this because I don’t know if you knew that our beloved game has been present in our Latino community for over 70 years. The Man’s Game has been synonymous of our migrant identity for seven decades and today is the most popular sport here in our county.

I don’t know how you feel about soccer, dear reader, but I assure you that all the players who have played this beautiful sport have felt the same passion and love throughout the years. I just hope you understand and don’t take it the wrong way, that soccer is so complex that talking or playing soccer is so similar that it confuses us. In fact, the vast majority of people mistake passion for talent. Look, I’ll explain: Passion involves defending (with words) your emotions and feelings that inspire the love you feel for soccer. However, talent (actions / plays) leads you to be a genius on the pitch and thus obtain the love or hatred of your teammates, opponents or fans. By this I mean that talking about soccer and playing soccer are two different things that often confuse us but that we enjoy enormously. So, if when reading this book you find something that you do not agree with, you have every right to cancel this comment, yes, cancel it, as a referee cancels a goal even if it is legitimate.

Identidad Y Sentido De Pertenencia

Sin duda alguna el fútbol es el deporte más bonito y popular en el mundo. Este hermoso juego inventado por los ingleses en 1863 se ha extendido a los cinco continentes y hoy en día es parte esencial de nuestra identidad latina. Pero, ¿qué es lo que tiene este deporte que despierta tantas emociones (positivas y negativas) en jugadores como en aficionados? ¿Por qué las personas que practican, miran o comentan sobre fútbol lo hacen con una cierta mirada infantil? ¿Será que gracias a fútbol condensamos unas series de emociones e ilusiones que forman parte de una identidad individual como colectiva? ¿Será que nuestro amado deporte es un laboratorio emocionante donde buscamos un sentido de pertenencia? Así pues, si analizamos claramente el juego del hombre descubriremos que no sólo es el más bello sino que también es un juego que nos ayuda a conocernos a nosotros mismos y por ende, a los demás. A nivel individual este deporte nos ayuda a conocer nuestra personalidad, nuestro carácter y nuestras propias convicciones. De la misma manera, a nivel grupal, el fútbol nos ayuda a descubrir la unión, el compañerismo, la gratitud y el verdadero valor del trabajo en conjunto.

Identity And Sense Of Belonging

Without a doubt soccer is the most beautiful and popular sport in the world. This beautiful game invented by the English in 1863 has spread to five continents and today is an essential part of our Latino identity. But, what is it about this sport that arouses so many emotions (positive and negative) in players and fans? Why do people who practice, watch or comment on soccer do so with a certain childish gaze? Could it be that thanks to soccer we condense a series of emotions and illusions that are part of an individual and collective identity? Could it be that our beloved sport is an exciting laboratory where we look for a sense of belonging? Thus, if we clearly analyze the man’s game we will discover that it is not only the most beautiful but also a game that helps us to know ourselves and therefore, others. On an individual level, this sport helps us to know our personality, our character and our own convictions. In the same way, at the group level, soccer helps us discover togetherness, camaraderie, gratitude and the true value of working together.

La Democracia Del Fútbol

Ronaldo Nazario Fenómeno campeón mundial con su selección brasileña en 1994 y 2002 afirmaría que el fútbol es lo más democrático que existe en el planeta, es para todos y no le niega oportunidades a nadie. Con esta frase tan contundente el astro brasileño nos obliga a ver la realidad tal y como es: cualquier persona puede jugar fútbol. Ya que este deporte no conoce de fronteras todas las personas tienen la oportunidad de formar parte de él. Ya sea a nivel infantil, juvenil, adultos o veteranos el fútbol abre espacios a quien desee jugarlo. De hecho, no discrimina ni en cuestión de raza, género, religión o físico. Preguntémosle a Pelé si su tono de piel fue una barrera para ganar tres mundiales. Preguntgémosle a las jóvenes latinas por qué hoy en día el fútbol es el deporte más popular entre ellas. Preguntémosle al egipcio Mohamed Salah si ser musulmán le ha impedido ser un extraordinario jugador en el Liverpool de Inglaterra. Y en cuanto a lo físico preguntémosle a Lionel Messi si su estatura ha sido un impedimento para lograr tantos triunfos a nivel individual o grupal con el Barcelona.

Soccer Democracy

Ronaldo Nazario (phenomenon) world champion with his Brazilian national team in 1994 and 2002 would affirm that soccer is the most democratic thing that exists on the planet, it is for everyone and it does not deny opportunities to anyone. With this forceful phrase, the Brazilian star forces us to see reality as it is: anyone can play soccer. Since this sport knows no borders, all people have the opportunity to be part of it. Whether at a child, youth, adult, or veteran level, soccer opens spaces for those who want to play it. In fact, it does not discriminate even on the basis of race, gender, religion or physicality. Fútbol Moderno Vs Fútbol Clásico (La vieja escuela)

Indiscutiblemente hoy en día el fútbol moderno es muy rápido y demasiado táctico. Para ganarse la titularidad los jugadores tienen que ser unos verdaderos atletas y cumplir con las exigencias tácticas de su entrenador. Hoy en día si los futbolistas no corren ordenadamente los técnicos lo rechazan mandándolos a calentar el banquillo. Los jugadores están dejando de ser futbolistas para convertirse en gladiadores. Este tipo de fútbol está destruyendo la belleza del juego porque mecaniza, uniformiza o robotiza a los jugadores. Ya todo mundo corre, se desgasta y así nadie les reprocha nada. Pero también hay que correr con inteligencia y embellecer el juego con la técnica clásica del fútbol. Por las exigencias tácticas del entrenador (el resultado tiene más valor que al juego mismo) el fútbol moderno es un laboratorio de ajedrez donde en ocasiones el entrenador es más admirado que el jugador mismo. Piénsese en Mourinho o Pep Guardiola.

Modern Soccer Vs Classical Soccer (Old school)

Unquestionably today modern soccer is too fast and way too tactical. To earn a spot players have to be true athletes and meet the tactical demands of their coach. Nowadays, if the players do not run in an orderly manner coaches reject them sending them to warm up the bench. Players are turning from soccer players to gladiators. This type of soccer is destroying the beauty of the game because it mechanizes, unifies or robotizes the players. Now everyone runs, wears out and thus no one reproaches them for anything. But you also have to run smart and embellish the game with classic soccer technique. Due to the tactical demands of the coach (the result is more valuable than the game itself); modern soccer is a chess laboratory where sometimes the coach is more admired than the player himself. Think of Mourinho or Pep Guardiola.

Fútbol Profesional vs Fútbol Amateur

No olvidemos nunca que todo futbolista profesional fue antes un jugador amateur. ¿Pero qué diferencia hay entre un profesional y un amateur? La diferencia más grande es que para el futbolista profesional es un trabajo y para el amateur el fútbol es una diversión. El jugador profesional de ante mano sabe que hay que respetar las instrucciones y la formación táctica de su entrenador. Estos futbolistas son esclavos de presiones tácticas a las cuales tienen que ajustarse. Mientras que los amateurs no son muy respetuosos de las órdenes o instrucciones tácticas de su entrenador ya que su relación con el deporte es más de pasatiempo o diversión. No obstante, todo jugador amateur siempre soñó con formar parte de un equipo profesional. Aún más, la verdad sea dicha: hay jugadores profesionales que juegan como amateur y futbolistas amateurs que debieron de haber sido profesionales. ¿Podrías nombrar a un jugador amateur que debió haber jugado profesional? ¿Hay muchos verdad?

Professional Soccer vs Amateur Soccer

Let us never forget that every professional soccer player was previously an amateur player. But what difference is there between a professional and an amateur? The biggest difference is that for professionals it is work and for the amateurs it is a pastime. The professional player knows beforehand that the instructions and tactical training of his coach must be respected. These players are slaves of tactical pressures to which they have to adjust. While amateur players are not very respectful of the orders or tactical instructions of their coach since their relationship with the sport is more of a hobby or pastime. However, every amateur player always dreamed of being part of a professional team. Furthermore, let the truth be told: there are professional soccer players who play as amateurs and amateur players who should have been professionals. Could you name an amateur player who should have played professionally? There are many, right?

El director técnico está ahí para organizar a las once soledades. Él es responsable por el buen comportamiento futbolístico y personal del grupo. El entrenador toma las decisiones importantes para que haya una buena relación colectiva. Él es el más indicado para ayudar a sus jugadores a tener un mejor desempeño dentro y fuera de la cancha. Si es inteligente, sabrá darles libertad (con responsabilidad) a sus jugadores dentro de la cancha y así evitar fricciones entre los futbolistas y su persona. El técnico tiene el poder de tomar decisiones para el buen o mal funcionamiento de lo colectivo. The soccer coach is there to organize the eleven solitudes. He is responsible for good soccer and the personal behavior of the group. The coach makes important decisions so that there is a good collective relationship. He is the most indicated person to help his players to have a better performance in and outside the pitch. If he is smart, he will know how to give freedom (responsibly) to his players inside the pitch so he can avoid friction among the players and himself. The coach has the power to make decisions for good or bad collective performance. If he is obsess with the tactical strategy and exerts too much influence it can be counterproductive for the beauty of the game. What do you think about the boludo and pelotudo Carlos Volpini? El Portero

Todo jugador que es portero es digno de ser admirado porque juega la posición más difícil en un equipo. Los grandes porteros son verdaderos líderes y la gran mayoría suelen ser francos, intuitivo y muy valientes. Eduardo Galeano en su libro Fútbol, a Sol y Sombra nos dice que el portero siempre tiene la culpa. Y si no la tiene, paga lo mismo. Cuando un jugador cualquiera comete un penal, el castigado es él: ahí lo dejan, abandonado ante el verdugo, en la inmensidad de la valla vacía. Y cuando el equipo tiene una mala tarde, es él quien paga el pato, bajo un lluvia de pelotazos expiando los pecados ajenos. El guardameta es el estoico señor de acero quien tiene que seguir luchando y alentando a sus compañeros. Pero a él, ¿quién lo alienta? Él tiene que sacar fuerzas de sus entrañas y seguir evitando el peligro. Amigo(a) lector(a) ¿Te acuerdas de nuestro queridísimo Jorge el brody Campos?

The goalkeeper

Every player that is a goalie is worthy of admiration because he plays the most difficult position in the team. The great goalies are true leaders and the vast majority tends to be frank, intuitive and very brave. Eduardo Galeano in his book Futbol, a Sol y Sombra tells us that the goalkeeper is always to blame. And if he is not guilty, he is still responsible. When any player commits a penalty, he is punished: they leave him there, abandoned before the executioner, in the vastness of the empty fence. And when the team has a bad day, he is the one who pays the price, in the rain of balls atoning for the sins of others. The goalkeeper is the stoic lord of steel who has to keep fighting and encouraging his teammates. But to him, who encourages him? He has to draw strength from his gut and keep avoiding danger. Dear reader, do you remember our beloved Jorge brody Campos?

El defensa

Para ser defensa hay que tener una verdadera vocación grupal. Estos jugadores siempre defienden el ideal de lo colectivo y suprimen sus propias necesidades. Suelen ser muy seguros en tomar decisiones porque basan su juego en la gran seguridad de su confianza. Los grandes defensas siempre dan todo su esfuerzo y se sacrifican para el bienestar del grupo. Son decididos y no tienen miedo de tomar riesgos para el beneficio de lo colectivo. De igual forma, es muy común que no tengan miedo de usar la violencia como recurso beneficial al grupo. ¿Qué opinas de Roberto Carlos? ¿De Paolo Maldini? ¿Te suena un tal Fabio Cannavaro, el defensa de la Italia campeona el 2006?

The defender

To be a defender you must have a true team vocation. These players always defend the collective ideals and suppress their own needs. They tend to be very self-assured in taking decisions because they base their game on the great security of their own trust. Great defenders give all their effort and they sacrifice themselves for the welfare of the group. They are determined and are not afraid to take risks for the benefit of the team. In the same way, it is very common that they are not afraid to use violence as a resource to benefit the group. What do you think about Roberto Carlos? How about Paolo Malini? Do you know a certain Fabio Cannavaro, the Italian World Cup Champion in 2006?

El centrocampista

Para ser medio hay que ser inteligente y mentalmente rápido. El jugador que desee jugar esta posición no solamente tiene que correr más que el resto sino que debe de pensar más rápido que nadie. Según Jorge Valdano en su libro Fútbol: el Juego Infinito los centrocampistas parecen exploradores y van buscando espacios y, si no los encuentran, los crean con paciencia y distracciones. Los medios antes de recibir el balón ya tienen dos o tres opciones de pase. Esto quiere decir que se anticipan a las jugadas. Los verdaderos medios son el motor del grupo, sacrificando su cuerpo, su alma y su mente por el bienestar del equipo. La característica principal de los medios suelen ser el manejo del tiempo. El juez de línea o árbitro asistente

En el fútbol el juez de línea tampoco inspira cariño. Ahí está para ayudar al árbitro y no puede tomar decisiones propias sin consultar con él. Corre la banda para asegurarse que no haya fuera de lugares o marcar faltas cercanas a él. No se le está permitido ni tocar el balón. The ball boys
