Julián Herbert

Julián Herbert (Acapulco, 1971) es saltillense por elección personal. Ha publicado los libros de poemas El nombre de esta casa (1999) y La resistencia (2003), y la novela Un mundo infiel (2004). Preparó, junto con Rocío Cerón y León Plascencia Ñol, el volumen El decir y el vértigo. Panorama de la poesía hispanoamericana reciente, 1965-1979. Sus textos se han traducido al inglés, el portugués y el catalán. Es vocalista del grupo de rock Las Madrastras. Obtuvo, con Kubla Khan, el Premio Nacional de Literatura Gilberto Owen 2003 en la rama de poesía.

A hybrid is a sexual cross between two different species. Although it might seem remarkable that a scientist should take a keen interest in the sexual habits of sunflowers, there is nothing new about the basic idea. Sexual crosses between different species of animals and plants have been a source of curiosity and fascination to naturalists since ancient times. The sturdy mule, which is the hybrid offspring of a mare and a donkey, was described in the Iliad by Homer. But Homer, like the ancient Chinese who also observed it, knew that mules are sterile. The very notion of hybridization conflicts with the Linnaean system of biological classification of 1753, which assumes that species are quintessentially distinct from each other. This same system is fundamental to the way we classify life today. Many evolutionary biologists still regard crossing species, however vigorous the offspring, as leading to an evolutionary cul-de-sac. For decades this attitude had been enshrined in Modern Darwinism, with its core tenet of the biological species concept, which defines species on the basis of reproductive isolation. Darwin himself was well aware that hybridization challenged certain aspects of his theory and he devoted an entire chapter to it in his book, The Origin of Species, observing that species within the same country could hardly have kept distinct had they been capable of crossing freely. But although Darwin is often quoted as opposing hybridization in evolution, a careful reading of his chapter reveals a great deal of ambiguity.

Hybridization radically changes the genetic make-up of the offspring when compared with either of the two parents, since, like genetic symbiogenesis, it brings together pre-evolved genes and genetic pathways from different evolutionary lineages. But in contrast with genetic symbiogenesis, the coalescing genomes of hybridization come from closely related species rather than, say, a host and a life form from an entirely different kingdom, such as a bacterium or even an organism from beyond the kingdoms, such as a virus. But the extent of the differences between two different species should not be underestimated. Hundreds of genes will have evolved differently. And there will be major upset and change at whole genomic level.
