Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880) was a French novelist who was best known for exploring realism in his work. Hailing from an upper-class family, Flaubert was exposed to literature at an early age. He received a formal education at Lycée Pierre-Corneille, before venturing to Paris to study law. A serious illness forced him to change his career path, reigniting his passion for writing. He completed his first novella, November, in 1842, launching a decade-spanning career. His most notable work, Madame Bovary was published in 1856 and is considered a literary masterpiece.

- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5I was really looking forward to reading this book as two of my friends cited it as one of their all-time favourite books. I would definitely not agree with then although it did grow on me. None of the characters are very likeable and I felt that Emma got what she deserved, although overly descriptive and slow in some parts I did enjoy it overall.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5I wanted to punch Emma in the face throughout the entire book. Flaubert's writing made me continue the novel though. I enjoyed the novel, not because of the plot but because of the fact it was a realistic novel.I'm pretty sure I am the only person who actually cackled when Emma's death was painful. She is so dumb.
- Calificación: 1 de 5 estrellas1/5I could not finish this book. I simply despised the main character.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5I hated this book when it was assigned to me my senior year of high school. Assuming I'd changed since then, I gave it another go. Turns out I had good sense as an 18-year-old. I'm putting it down after 170 unsatisfying pages.
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5An immoral wife sleeps around to escape the hum-drum of existence. Ho hum. Who cares? Still, well written.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5The story of Emma and Charles and her adulterous affair with Rudolphe. Although Emma's character is a bit flightly and exceedingly dramatic at times, the reader an relate to her everyday struggles of being married to an "ordinary" man and always wanting more. I think the translation of the book is important as the copy that I picked up did not flow as well as I believe it should have, but I am chalking that up entirely to the translation.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Flaubert is flawless as a writer. It was Nabokov in his tome on Russian Literature which led me to discover him.
This is world reknowned famous story of the tragic lives of Madame Bovary and her husband Mousier Bovary, a double tragedy where unbeknowns to either of them their losses are reflected in the ways their lives end up in a state of tragic self-destruction. Well worth the read and I will definitely read more Flaubert. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5This book is supposed to be a classic, but I believe the only reason it was popular back in its day was because it was so scandalous compared to anything else published. The book dragged on and on and the lead character was simply not all that like-able. Sometimes, a person gets what they deserve. Other times they don't. This book exemplifies this, only it takes way too long to do it.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5not sure what to expect but for sure a classic. she was very adventourous for her time and had lots of affairs but moneywise, she was not very smart and was also taken advantage of. it probably would been a better ending for her if she managed the money better. easier to read than expected.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5I did not read this version I read a 'free' Public domain kindle book. It was a great version by Eleanor Marx-Aveling. You don't need to buy it, this version is great, but you will need a device to read it on!
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5An emotional story about flawed humanity. Each of the characters in the book has their own flaws, which inevitably leads to a fitting disaster. Although I didn't like many of the characters (although Mr Bovary grew on me towards the end) and at times I felt like thowing the book across the room (which I would never do), the insight Flaubert shows into human nature makes this a beautiful work.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5The kind of book that uses "spaded" as a transitive verb and it works. (How to judge classics in translation? The voice is so far from Davis' own work (as well as her Proust) that one assumes the translation is impeccable. What struck me most was how idiotic, provincial, and fixed the characters were regarded by the narrative voice. Still, pretty good for a first novel circa 1856. The structure is, of course, flawless. Worth it for the opening scene of poor Bovary in school.)
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5A classic. What else can one say? Oh yes, it's actually an enjoyable read as well as being supposedly one of the best books in history.
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5Had to force myself to finish it, but glad I did. The story may be about nothing but the prose and themes are brilliant and subtle. A book that has stayed with me far more than I thought it would.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5This was a "slow-read"-book. I'm not so very fond of those. The descriptions were so detailed they became boring, but in the same time, they did add something for someone interested in history for example. I didn't care about Emma at all. I couldn't understand how someone who is so bored still fails to spend time with their child. I didn't understand how she came to feel that taking her life was the only thing to do in the end. The only one I cared for even a little, was Emma's husband.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5It's been a few years since I read this book, but I remember thinking how pathetic Ms. Bovary was. I could not develop any sympathy for her whatsoever and thought she was one of those who thought love was about first kisses and butterflies in the stomach. Perhaps she watched too many soap operas. Anyway, not a female character in literature I would aspire to be. Read Little Women or some Jane Austen.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5I am so thankful for finally finishing this book. The characters were either selfish, stupid, or weak.
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5For a romance I found this surprisingly enjoyable. Emma marries Charles Bovary but quickly finds herself bored with him and begins a series of affairs with other men. This book has everything I hate: romance, marriage troubles, affairs, and an annoying main character, yet for some reason I kind of liked it. I probably wouldn't read it again, but it wasn't bad while I did read it.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5I know that this is a classic (I read it for my "Novels" class in college), but the characters drove me crazy! Whine whine whine whine whine. I get enough of that in read life without encountering it in my pleasure reading time as well. Classic or not, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5It was very detailed writing and the story line should have been interesting, but I could not get invested in the characters. Particularly the title character. Very frustrating read. I kept expecting something to happen and even when they did, I could have cared less. Maybe it was just me, or just my view of the genre, but I found it slow and tedious at best.
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5Written in 1857. Emma, a doctor's wife, is lonely and bored and has affairs with Rodolphe and Léon which are both ill-fated. In her disillusionment she has a taste of arsenic with the usual outcome. Okay, but showing it's age.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Madame Bovary is always presented as an apex of realism -- so I was surprised to find that it isn't realist at all. It's more of a virtuosic commentary on the debate between literary realism and romanticism. It's hard to read a book where you know nothing good is ever going to happen to any of the characters, but in this case, it's worth it.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5Just because a book is a classic, does not necessarily mean a good read. I'm guessing that most of this book's success can be attributed to the fact that it would have been very scandalous in it's day. No matter when something is written, it helps if at least ONE of the characters is sympathetic...and I honestly could not root for any of them, not even remotely.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5Dear Emma, what were you thinking?! With Madame Bovary, Flaubert has the reader mocking the main character one minute, despising her the next and feeling sorry before long. Great read today, I can only imagine the shock effect back in the mid 1800s!
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5I agree with Will Cuppy in preferring Salammbo to Mme. Bovary, but I felt I should have it as a classic. I was ashamed because once in class i said Mme. B. herself was stupid without having read it and a student who had read it disagreed.
- Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5Flaubert is such a good writer that his characters are appealing despite his intentions, which I think were to demonstrate the ultimate meaninglessness of their lives. (Not to mention his beautiful depictions of pastoral and small-town life.) But those intentions poison the plot, so that it becomes more of a chore than a joy to read about the heroine's ongoing degradation.
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5I liked this book and am glad I read it, especially since it is a classic. Reading it for English class and having discussions definitely helped me get through to the meanings of some parts that i didn't quite get and helped me understand exactly what Flaubert was trying to say. In this book, Emma reminds me of a classical version of a desperate housewife. She is never satisfied with what she has and carries on several affairs while her husband stands idly by.
- Calificación: 1 de 5 estrellas1/5I want the last two months of my reading life back, please. This is the absolute worst book that I have read in a decade or more. Emma, the main character, is a terrible woman who makes terrible choices, and who I just do not care one bit about. This book is like listening to your much prettier younger sister whine for roughly 300 pages. I didn't feel pity for Emma in the slightest, nor did I enjoy one thing about this book except for the characterization of Charles Bovary.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5I read this novel when I was younger and the impressions I have of the work now is that it was a beautifully written book. Flaubert spent much labor over constructing perfect lines and it shows. It is a novel that I plan on re-reading.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5I'm in love with these kind of books, women who dare to change the social rules of a time when forms and conventions are compulsory. Loved the drama.
