    Introduction to the Book

Welcome to this book designed to help you expand your knowledge and understanding of Spanish and English vocabulary related to global warming and climate change. My goal is to help you speak and write more fluently. Plus, be able to understand more of what you hear and read.

Let's face it, Spanish and English can be difficult to master, even for the best students. In this book, you'll find Spanish and English dialogues, vocabulary words and phrases that are ideal for intermediate level students. The best way to learn new vocabulary is in context. To get the most bang for your buck, be sure to do the following:

    −  Review frequently.

−  Try to use some of the phrases and expressions in real life.

−  Don't be nervous about making mistakes. That's how you'll get better at Spanish!

−  Consider studying with a friend so you can help each other stay motivated.

−  Use a notebook and write down new words, idioms, or expressions, that you run across. Review frequently so that they stay fresh in your mind.

−  Be sure to answer the questions at the end of each lesson. I recommend trying to do this from memory. No peeking!

    Climate Change vs. Global Warming

Sarah: Have you heard about the difference between climate change and global warming?

John: Yes, I think so. Global warming refers to the Earth's temperature getting hotter, right?

Sarah: Exactly. It's mostly caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trapping heat. But climate change is a broader term. It includes changes in weather patterns, like more extreme storms or rising sea levels.

John: So, global warming is just one part of climate change?

Sarah: Yes, that's right. Global warming affects the climate, but climate change covers all kinds of changes that happen as a result.

    Vocabulary

climate change: Long-term changes in temperature, weather patterns, and other aspects of the Earth's climate.

global warming: The increase in Earth's average temperature due to human activities, especially the release of greenhouse gases.

greenhouse gases: Gases that trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, like carbon dioxide.

    extreme: Very unusual or severe.

atmosphere: The layer of gases surrounding the Earth, essential for life on Earth.

    Comprehension Questions

What is the main difference between climate change and global warming?

How do greenhouse gases contribute to global warming?

What are some examples of extreme weather events that could result from climate change?

    Answers

The main difference is that global warming refers to the Earth's temperature getting hotter, while climate change includes broader changes in weather patterns, like more extreme storms.

Greenhouse gases trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, causing the Earth's temperature to rise, which leads to global warming.

Examples of extreme weather events from climate change include unusual heatwaves, stronger storms, floods, or droughts.

    Discussion Questions

How do you think global warming and climate change affect daily life in different parts of the world?

What actions can individuals take to help reduce the impact of global warming and climate change?

Do you believe governments are doing enough for climate change?
