Ello inquieta mucho a Rodión.

As always, Dostoevsky's works are complex and appeal on many levels. So too with this classic. Nonetheless, the book was simply too long. While it had its moments of fantastic dialog and personalities, and some of the ethical issues are as pertinent today as then, there were too many characters and too much unnecessary language. I'm happy I finally took the time to read this work but feel that the same impact could have been made in more concise book. A recommended read yet in my opinion a somewhat overrated classic.

Having finished part 1: I think this is to some extent like a past-age 'Dexter' a look inside the mind of a murderer. Unlike this Dexter this guy seems like a bit of an idiot, as much as he thinks of himself as a bit of a criminal-mastermind, he comes off a bit more like one of 'regular criminals' that he despises. The writing is great describing very interesting characters and setting up lots of interesting and contrasting ideas that you can sense will be leveraged to illustrate the nature of the main character. I'm loving it and am very keen to read on.

Glad I've read it and I can see why it's one of the great classics for so many reasons, but the protagonist is so grossly unappealing and the melodrama so overwhelming in so many places, that it was a book read for duty, not for pleasure.

F.D. had a window into the human soul. This is an incredibly good novel.

It was bitter cold last night. The trip from work to the kitchen was uneventful enough. I prepared soup and awaited my wife. After dinner, I placed Sonny Rollins' 9/11 Concert on the stereo and sat down with the last 52 pages of Crime and Punishment. the greatest testament I can afford the novel conclusion is that for 25 minutes I didn't hear any jazz, only Dostoevsky's denouement

If I had to make a list of books that got under my skin, this would be number one, way above anything else. Do I want to write this..the idea of murder and that you may get carried away with that idea and actually do it is one that really got to me. The interrogation scenes often play out in different variations in my dreams. Unforgettable.

Loved it, but I was horrified at the way I found myself hoping that this coldblooded killer would get away with his crime. It got so bad that I actually had to stop reading at times because I was so afraid he was going to be found out by his increasingly bizarre behavior. I can see how some people would find this too dense to get through, but I enjoyed the detail.

The psyche is the focus of this amazingly well-crafted story, not the plot line. Dostoyevsky does a simply incredible job of illuminating Raskolnikov, and I am very glad to have read it.

in general, every russian novel i've read has knocked me for a loop. this one was no exception. and that's all i can think to say at the moment.

Long on my to-read list (as almost all of the Russian literary cannon is), Dostoevsky definitely delivers. The psychology and philosophical argument behind Raskolnikov's crime is complex, but somehow the story unfolds in a very clear and straightforward manner. There is definitely something dated and something inherently Russian about this novel, but I don't think it suffers as a result.

This was a great book. I loved the relationship between Raskolnikov and Porfiry Petrovich. Excellent dialogue, excellent characters, flat ending. If Dostoevsky knew how to end a novel, this would've gotten a rating even higher than 4 stars. As it stands, it is still better than 90% of the books out there, and therefore I recommend reading it.

I don't know or read a word of Russian. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this translation of Dostoevsky's novel. It drew and held my interest for over 500 pages. Footnotes were judicious. When they occurred, the footnotes provided additional useful information about locations, historical events, or key linguistic shifts. If English is your native language, this translation is a wonderful way to absorb Dostoevsky[s important ideas and personalities.

I have already stated in a previous review that I love Dostoevsky, so keep that in mind. This novel, although though provoking and philosophically sound, is at times in desperate need of an editor. It seems like the more verbose version of Poe's Telltale Heart.

An excellent book on the psyche of a man going through an existential crisis. After committing a murder, the protagonist lives in both guilt and attempt to justify his actions. He falls into paranoia and pays for his crime before his punishment is delivered. The names are extremely long and hard to remember and even harder to pronounce but within the first three hundred pages, I got used to it.

I have said this a lot but it quite literally made me feel guilty and paranoid around the times I was reading it. I saw a police officer and my first thought was ‘oh shit, they know!’ Until a second later when I remembered that in fact I had committed zero murders.

Did not enjoy this. It was long, drawn out, confusing and repetitive. I enjoyed the overall level and quality of writing, but I just could not get into the story.

Dostoyevsky enters the mind of a murderer who feels no remorse but yet cannot bear to keep his act a secret. Rodya commits a senseless crime, which could have been the perfect one but for his arrogance. This story is an excellent description of the criminal mind: the sense of entitlement, the narcisissm, the weird mix of ruthlessness and charity. This author, my all-time favorite, is the master of the psychological novel.

This book is the reason I love Dostoevsky. He puts his truth in the most unlikely characters and finds his salvation in the most unlikely places. When I lived in St. Petersburg, I had to do the Crime and Punishment walk, the highlight of which is finding Rodion's garret room. There's graffiti on the wall outside "his" door from all his fans and supporters. It's the greatest.

A brilliant searing narrative of Raskolnikov who is driven to murder for money. Dotsoevsky paints a grim picture of life amongst the Russian underclass making one wish not to live the same life.

The title says it all, and really, what can I add to the volumes of criticism that have been written about this novel? I can only say that the author is more concerned with the ideas of his characters than he is with the characters themselves. They seem to be mouthpieces so that the author can expound. I feel as if they are specimens under glass for us to study. You can probably tell that I didn’t empathize or sympathize with any of the characters.

Very well read by Alex Jennings. The abridgement was a bit jumpy and seemed to lose some of the story's details, but it was still an entertaining and enlightening picture of 19th Century Russian life.
