What Happened to the Bennetts, Lisa Scotoline, author; Eduardo Ballerini, narratorThe Bennetts, Jason, Lucinda, Ethan, his older sister 15-year-old Allison, and their dog Moonie, are in their brand-new Mercedes, driving home from Allison’s field hockey game. They are in good spirits because Allison’s team won their game and Allison scored a goal. When Ethan remarks that there is a pick-up truck on their tail, Jason does not give it a second thought. The pick-up makes no attempt to pass them, but gets closer and closer, seemingly to taunt them. Jason is going the speed limit and does not want anyone to call 911. Suddenly, when rounding a curve, the truck speeds up and cuts them off, trapping them when it stops short in front of them. On the curve, it is too dangerous for them to back up and escape. When the two male passengers, Milo and Junior, exit from the pick-up, with weapons drawn, Lucinda finally decides to call 911. The thugs notice and stop her. When they demand the keys to the Mercedes, Jason doesn’t fight them. He quietly hands them over because his family’s safety comes before the car. Out of the blue, the dog Moonie leaps forward and spooks the carjackers. One of the men who had been leering at Allison is startled. and he fires his weapon. He misses the dog, but the errant bullet hits Allison. While the Bennetts tend to Allison’s wounds, Milo, one of the thugs, shoots and kills the other, Junior. He leaves the gun at the scene and blames the murder on Jason. Junior’s father is George Veria, a mob boss. Why did he do that? What else is at play here? George will now go after the Bennetts. A vendetta must be satisfied. So begins a nightmare for the Bennett family. What seemed like a carjacking gone awry, turns into a far more terrible tragedy that involves murder, crooked cops, crooked FBI agents, crooked politicians, crooked mobsters, witness protection, vengeance and family secrets that when revealed threaten to upend the Bennett’s lives even further. It turns out that a convoluted plot has been hatched, and at the core of it is a little remembered moment in Jason’s past. When the Bennett’s are taken into Witness Protection, and over the course of the following days, no one is caught for the crimes, they will begin to wonder whether or not this was simply a carjacking gone wrong. Why were the cops slow walking this? What was the ultimate reason for the carjacking? Was it something more sinister? Was something in Lucinda’s past the reason for it? Was it something in Jason’s past? Rumors will fly when the family disappears, as they must for the witness protection program. In addition to losing their daughter, the Bennetts now lose all connection to their former lives. Some conjecture that Jason killed them all. An amateur detective makes matters worse when he gets Lucinda’s best friend to reveal a secret. There is a very sinister plot here. It involves crooked politicians, gang members and law enforcement officers that make deals with the devil. It will lead Jason to risk his life to uncover the murderer and obtain justice for his family. As they watch friends and busybodies, social media and journalists become rumormongers making matters worse for them, they become alarmed. They will question their love, loyalty, fidelity and devotion. Can they forgive any of the actors in this horrible train of events? Will they be able to deal with their terrible loss?It is a good story, but it lacks real plausibility as Jason Bennett goes up against people far more powerful than he is, risking everything to find the murderer of his daughter and uncover the real reason for the hijacking. He wants justice! They all deserve the truth, but the way in which he goes about it lacks credence. There are a series of questionable coincidences that lead to the eventual resolution with far too many tangents making them hard to manage and the novel a bit choppy.

I have become disillusioned with thrillers lately, but I'm glad I didn't let that stop me from reading this early release copy of Lisa Scottoline's new book. I have to admit I've never read one of her books before, but went in with an open mind when I was granted the chance to read this book which is coming out next year. I was blown away by the pace set in this book, and loved the way it flipped seamlessly from one plot line to another. The book starts out with a horrific event on a dark highway involving a family heading home in their vehicle after their daughter's soccer game. They are a perfectly ordinary family and this totally shocking and violent event changes their lives forever. What begins as an ordinary car jacking escalates to what could possibly be a revenge killing, or a complex conspiracy, or a mob hit and ultimately to something even bigger than that. Jason Bennett vows to find whoever is responsible for ripping his family apart, and to ensure that his family gets justice. He changes from an amiable, average guy to a single-minded and determined vigilante who will let nothing deter him from his goal. The book proceeds at warp speed and the tension never lets up. I highly recommend What Happened to the Bennetts for anyone who enjoys high-octane thrillers. I would also like to thank the author, Net Galley, and G.P. Putnam & Sons for giving me the chance to read this book.

It’s just a middle of the line book for this author.

A little slow to get into simply because you wonder how Scottoline is going to use up a possible huge portion of the book with where the family is located...ie., how many walks/runs can they take with nowhere to officially go. But suddenly we are pulled into the actual story the book is about and from there it flows quickly. Jason turns out to do some rather super human things but after all, this IS a novel and an author can handle characters doing anything he/she wishes the characters to do!

What Happened to the Bennetts is a family/political thriller that deals with grief, betrayal, and stepping up to the plate when the chips are down. The first half of the book is all about the grief part after a carjacking goes horribly wrong—although I don't think a carjacking can go right. The second half goes off the rails with unplausible plot twists. If you throw reality out the window, the story is entertaining. It's just so far-fetched; it didn't ring true for me. The value-of-family message was nice, but somehow, the characters fell flat trying to deliver it—especially Jason, the superhero dad. He starts as an accountant, then becomes a badass, gun-toting killer. The end was also lacking—something.

I really enjoy Lisa Scottoline books, and What Happened to the Bennetts is no exception. It begins with a drive after a game, with the family joking. However, when their car is pinned in by another vehicle, their lives change in an instant. After this incident, the family is whisked away to witness protection, and the reasons and the corruption which come to light are frightening. I enjoyed this look at a family grieving, but also trying to take control of a bad situation and come out on top. The non-stop action was heart racing!Although I know this is a novel and not real life, I still couldn't believe some of the things that happened. Would a kingpin let someone go? Would a normal guy be able to pull off the things that Jason did? I had no qualm about the corruption piece, as I do believe that happens more than we know.

What Happened to the Bennetts gets off to an explosive and tense start on the very first page. Bestselling author Lisa Scottoline's inspiration for the story came from being tailgated, an experience that caused her to wonder what could happen should being followed serve as the prelude to a carjacking. She opted not to speed up because she was enjoying the drive in a wooded area of Pennsylvania, near her home. So as the story opens, the Bennetts, an unremarkable American family living in southeastern Pennsylvania. Jason operates his own court reporting business and his wife, Lucinda, is a photographer. They are en route home from daughter Allison's soccer game in Jason's recently purchased Mercedes. Allison is in the back seat with her younger brother, Ethan, and the family dog, Moonie, when Jason notices a pickup following their vehicle too closely on the single-lane road that winds uphill through the woods. Like Scottoline, Jason has no room to maneuver his vehicle over in order to permit the pickup to pass. Also like Scottoline, Jason does not want to accelerate, because he feels he has a right to drive as he sees fit. He resists his family's urging to speed up and "smoke" the pickup with his powerful new car. Eventually, though, he relents and as he accelerates, so does the pickup, passing the Bennetts' car, pulling in front of it, and then stopping, blocking the road. Two men jump out of the pickup, brandishing weapons, and inform Jason, "We're taking the car." The carjacking ends tragically.Reeling, the Bennetts return to their home after meeting with local authorities, who theorize that the carjackers were looking for a getaway vehicle after committing a double homicide. And the Bennetts were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. They are shocked to find FBI agents on their doorstep at 3:15 a.m. Agents Dom Kingston and Michael Hallman explain that the two assailants were members of GVO, a crime syndicate that distributes and sells opiates, and had just killed two retail-level drug dealers in the organization. The Bennetts are now in the cross-hairs of GVO. Because their lives are in danger, they need to enter the witness protection program for their safety and well-being. Immediately. Scottoline effectively relates the story from Jason's point of view, utilizing a first-person narrative. The FBI explains to the family that they will be under the watchful eyes of the FBI twenty-four hours per day in a safe location, but "there can be no communication" with their family, friends, employees, neighbors or friends. Lucinda's inability to continue caring for her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and resides in a care facility, is particularly distressing. They will not even be permitted to attend a close family member's funeral. They must simply vanish. After a family meeting, they reluctantly come to the conclusion that, although the FBI cannot force them to enter the program, they do not really have any other option. Jason explains, "We left our lives in silence. . . . We'd had fifteen minutes to pack, . . . Deep inside me was the most profound sorrow I had ever known, one that had settled in, unpacked, and took up residence." Scottoline was surprised to learn that the FBI would probably hide the Bennetts somewhere in Delaware. Jason shares Scottoline's shocked reaction when he learns he and his family are being transported to the Delaware coast, just outside a beach town that is largely deserted during the off-season. The safe house is adjacent to a saltwater tidal marsh and the surrounding houses are mostly vacation homes, closed until the summer season begins. Agents Kingston and Hallman (affectionately known as Wiki, because of his encyclopedic knowledge about many topics) reside in a smaller home on the same lot that houses their command center. Jason quickly learns there are cameras mounted everywhere, including in the trees, and the agents will maintain round-the-clock surveillance as part of their "Babysitter's Club" assignment. Jason soon bonds with Dom (Agent Kingston) as they jog together and Dom explains the circumstances that prompted him to transfer out of an undercover assignment. Most importantly for purposes of Scottoline's tautly-crafted story, Jason gradually comes to trust Dom, believing that the agent's only priority is keeping him and his family safe. The marshlands surrounding the safe house are dark, slippery, and mysterious, and Jason relates how any solid ground he once felt beneath his feet has been ripped away from him. But he is determined to keep his family safe, no matter the cost.In the absence of facts, the Bennetts' friends, neighbors, and business associates begin speculating about what has become of them. They take to social media to commiserate and seek answers, and Lucinda's best friend lodges a missing persons report with the police. Rumors and theories swirl, and Jason discovers a website maintained by an amateur sleuth who bills himself as "America's premier citizen detective." He is convinced that Jason murdered his family and went on the run, which only adds to Jason's misery . . . and determination.Scottoline compassionately describes the emotional devastation that Jason and his family feel about the prospect of leaving their lives behind and starting over in every conceivable way. It is especially difficult for young Ethan, who keeps asking about his friends and when they will be going home. Lucinda came from a well-off family, but Jason had a modest upbringing on a farm near Hershey, Pennsylvania. Jason completed one year of law school before dropping out for financial reasons. In combination with what he has learned during his years as a court reporter, he knows more about legal procedure than most non-lawyers. But the one topic that has never come up during all of the depositions he has transcribed is the witness protection program. He quickly discovers that it was not really designed to shelter innocent witnesses to crimes. Rather, most of the "applicants" are criminals who have entered into plea agreements under the terms of which they provide evidence against other perpetrators in exchange for the opportunity to slip into the kind of new lives Jason and his family want no part of. So even though they have been warned about engaging in any online behavior that might reveal their whereabouts and jeopardize their security, Jason utilizes his legal prowess to begin researching the carjackers and their connections to other criminals, especially GVO. And decides that he and his family are not going to simply give up their lives and relationships. Jason is bent on unraveling the mystery so that his family's attackers and anyone with whom they conspired can be brought to justice . . . and the Bennetts can reclaim their lives. At that point, Scottoline takes readers along as Jason undertakes a rogue, action-packed search for the truth and to ensure that justice is served. His dangerous journey is filled with shocking revelations -- some heartbreaking -- along with surprising plot twists, and numerous near-misses. Scottoline introduces a cast of intriguing supporting characters along the way, both friend and foe, as she gradually reveals that what initially appeared to be a random carjacking was anything but.At its core, What Happened to the Bennetts is a richly emotional rumination on marriage, parenting, betrayal, and forgiveness. Scottoline illustrates that Dylan Thomas was, to a certain extent, right. If you are able to go home again, you will find that home has most changed during your absence. But more importantly, you will definitely have changed. So after all that they have lost, and everything they have endured, the Bennetts cannot simply return to their home and pick up where they left off. The Bennetts are fully developed and relatable characters who are yanked by tragedy out of the sameness and complacency of their very ordinary day-to-day existence. Circumstances force them to address their assumptions, the things they have taken for granted, and evaluate whether their marriage can and should survive the mistakes they have made. Ultimately, Scottoline says the book is about both "the triumph of an individual and also the triumph of a family when they work together to deal with the most horrible thing they can imagine happening to them."And what is better than a relentlessly fast-paced, nail-biting, and deeply moving story about family, love, and justice? If told by the incomparable Scottoline, absolutely nothing. What Happened to the Bennetts is Scottoline at her best and that is very good indeed. It is thoroughly engrossing, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Thanks to NetGalley for an Advance Reader's Copy of the book.

4.5 stars!I have a girl crush on Lisa Scottolini. Author, lawyer, mom…whip smart, funny as anything, and it doesn’t hurt that she lives and writes about my local area, which makes it easy and fun for me to jump into her books. What Happened to the Bennetts doesn’t disappoint. She drew me in at the beginning with a eye opening moment. From there, what Scottolini let’s you ‘see’ is one thing, but the twists just keep on coming. Just when I thought the twists were over and I knew what was going on, bam…another twist. For me, the book started slowing down around 3/4 of the way thru, but it then picked up again and took off. Ending left me in tears. The Bennett Family is like the family next door; well off, well liked and relatable. Dad Jason owns a successful court reporting business, with a superpower of reading lips. Mom Lucinda owns a photography business. Allison is an active high schooler, athletic and outgoing. Ethan, is a middle schooler, introvert and a sweetheart who tugs at your heart. A leisurely drive home after attending the daughter’s lacrosse, takes a horrible turn as they are the target of a carjacking. From there, you will live a parents worst nightmare and a fathers demand for justice, a family in turmoil. What starts as a carjacking, eventually draws you into the underbelly of crime. Scottolini uses her legal background and spins another wonderful legal drama. Thanks to Ms. Scottolini, Penguin Group, Goodreads and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.

This book starts out with a bang and set me up to expecting much more than it delivered. I loved the first part of the book when the Bennett family is dealing with their tragic losses…together. But the second part of the book was disappointing. When Jason decides to “take matters into his own hands,” I felt the story lost its family drama appeal. But it did have a lot of action.I enjoyed the little bit about the witness protection program that the story revealed. It is heard to imagine just one day disappearing, no one knowing what happened to you, having to start a new life. Most of the characters were likable – Ethan, the son; Dom – one of the FBI agents (loved him), and Dom’s friends. In my opinion, not one of Scottoline’s best, but I am still a fan.

Maybe a hero was just a guy who solved a problem.from What Happened to the Bennetts by Lisa ScottolineWhat happened to the Bennetts? One day, they just disappeared. Then, their home burned down, and their places of business. A nosy journalist is sure there is a juicy, nefarious story to be found. Their friends can’t believe his insinuations that Jason Bennett killed his family and hid an illicit affair.Lisa Scottoline’s new thriller will delight her fans. Jason Bennett is a father determined to do whatever it takes to allow his family to have a normal life. After his daughter is killed in what appeared to be a car jacking, his family was forced to enter WITSEC. When they learn that the FBI is working with the man who fired the shot, Jason can’t help but break the rules, going online and conducting his own investigation into the criminal organization behind his daughter’s death. What he learns shocks him, and understanding that the system’s view of justice is different from his own, he decides to handle things himself. He finds unusual allies, the good hearted trucker Flossie with her entourage of chihuahuas, and even a dying drug czar. Jason is motivated by love of his family, even when contending with unexpected knowledge about his marriage. It’s a story sure to entertain and divert, with plenty of interesting twists. As always, Scottoline takes readers across Philadelphia and its environs, from Chester County to West Philadelphia. We see the impact of illegal drugs on small towns, revisit the horror of Gitmo, and corruption in the legal and political systems. It’s great entertainment.I received a free egalley from the publisher through NetGalley. My review is fair and unbiased.
