Eragon is a bit derivative, but it is still good fantasy. I enjoyed it throughout, and I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.

I'm having it hard to remember when I actually read this book and whether it was before or after seeing the film. I think it was after seeing the film because I have a feeling that I got a bit confused over several significant plot points in the novel that in the end hadn't shown up in the film. Anyway, I borrowed this book from a friend and decided to give it a chance. I had enjoyed the film and since it was a fantasy series, I couldn't really say no to not reading it, especially since I am fond of fantasy books and films and it did look good and interesting. As for the overall story - I really liked the premise; a poor farmer boy becoming a dragon rider in a world where all dragon riders had been killed off by an evil character. It was the first book that I read where dragons played an essential part in the story. The book itself was very easy to read; it had a simple language, style and structure. The characters were intriguing but they came off rather annoying sometimes. I also enjoyed Eragons interaction with his dragon, Saphira. In general, although as I mentioned, I liked the premise, the actual plot wasn't very original. Many parts were indeed predictable but of course, there were several scenes that were surprising. Christopher Paolini's style and language also lacked creativity. I remember many expressions, personifications and simlies were too old and boring, as in they had been used before way too often. I did enjoy it all but I remember that sometimes, it was too much, especially the plot line. A book can have lots of plot points, in fact, that is encouraging because most great books have a very complicated, long and difficult plot (for example; the Harry Potter series). However, the question is, how do the author manage to pull them off? There is always a need for a common thread that continues throughout a series while other plot points are ending, and I am afraid that I didn't see that in Eragon. Instead, things just kept pop up.So that's why I gave it a 3 stars. I will someday start to read [book:the Eldest] though. I did read it after this but I just got annoyed at all the new drama and the plot kept twist and turn in several directions, so I abandoned it but since I recently bought it, I will give it a second chance and re-read it (the sequel that is).Memorable Quotes that I liked"It's overwhelming. I feel as if I am living in an illusion, a dream where all things are possible. Amazing things do happen, I know, but always to someone else, always in some far-off place and time.""These books are my friends, my companions. They make me laugh and cry and find meaning in life."

I'm really not sure what to say about this book. I found it in the normal science fiction/fantsay section of a bookshop, not the children's section, but when I enter it into LT it comes up as "Corgi Childrens". It was certainly a good read, gripping and exciting, with one or two original ideas and some interesting twists in the plot. At the same time I think it could have been better written. Parts of it don't hang together well. Mind you, on reading the author blurb I find it was written by a 15 year old, so all power to his elbow for producing something so good.I suppose there's a tendency to judge all fantasy, especially if it contains elves, dwarves and orc-like creatures, by the standards set by Tolkien, who created a fantasy world that seemed to be internally consistent. By those standards, this book falls quite a bit short.Incidentally I saw the film version of Eragon on a plane today and thought it was very poor compared to the book.

Muy simple la historia, el aumento de poder en tan poco tiempo del Prota. Esperaba más de esta historia. No sé si el audiolibro está muy resumido.

Ham-handed attempt to mash together every fantasy cliche possible. The writing is bad, the characters have no personality, and the plot is by-the-numbers. There is literally no reason to read this book.

I loved the early part about raising the dragon, but I lost interest in all the politics and warfare between the races. I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator, Gerard Doyle, was a fantastic choice, as he is for most books in this genre. I didn't find the story derivative, as others have claimed, but I did find it to be too long. It lost its sparkle about midway through and would've been helped by a much more attentive editor.

It took me a while to get into this book. The beginning is a little TOO descriptive. The author spends a great deal of time explaining every minute detail, which in the beginning is a little annoying. However, once you get past that minor detail, the story makes for an interesting read.

Eragon is a book written by a fifteen year old, and therefore none should be surprised that it is incredibly derivative of earlier, better written tales. It is cliche and unoriginal, though the skill of the writer is somewhat surprising for his age.The story seems to draw a great deal from those ever present science fiction and fantasy icons: Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. However, despite its unoriginality and its faults, it is a fun read, but I wouldn't spend the money on the hardcover unless you just really want a pretty book to sit on your shelf and collect dust.

I wanted to love it. It has dragons, heroes, villains, elves, battles between good and evil -- how could you not devour an epic tale like this? The excessive use of commas and frequent over description knocked a few stars off. It could have used another round of editing, or polishing. I'm hoping that the author has matured in his writing skills by the next installment, otherwise it will be too painful to continue.

OK fantasy YA novel. My daughter Jordy said it was a bit too derivative of Tolkien and others and I guess that's right. I enjoyed it though. I have not read the others.

I loved this book! The movie wasn't really that good, but the book is wonderful! The world Alageaisa [sp] is fully developed and while I can see the influence of other fantasy/scifi projects and books, it's not a copy.

I very much enjoyed reading Eragon—book one in the Inheritance series. Now, nineteen years after its publication, it was a nice change from most of the modern thrillers I read today (although I like them too). Of course, being a YA supernatural fantasy, you would expect it to be without a lot of cursing, sex, and graphic violence. Yet it was a fascinating journey filled with magic, elves, dwarves, sorcerers, and a dragon. I loved the characters and found the language and names very inventive. Some critics claim Paolini might have gotten some of his ideas from other renowned writers, such as J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, and George R. R. Martin (a lot of initials). Still, there is more than enough originality to engage and entertain the reader. I was drawn in from the first page and look forward to reading about Eragon's future.

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf since 2003~2004. While I am sad it took me so long to read this amazing book, I am also excited that I won't have to wait to read the other books in this series. The first few chapters of the book was a bit rough, not because of a lack of interesting beginning, but because it took me a while to get acquainted with Alagaesia. But, as I learned more about the world of the book as I continued reading, I got pulled in more and more. Paolini does some wonderful foreshadowing throughout this first book. The reader is able to guess at somethings, but is left without confirmation until Paolini wants you to know. The book ends with the immediate situation at a kind of resolution, but still with a lot of large plot points left unsolved, but a general path set down to lead into the next book.Content Warning: Descriptions of battles and wounds, mentions of torture - though no descriptions of it happening, there is some details of the resulting wounds.
