Un grupo de brujas vuela en la noche; entre ellas hay una muy torpe que tiene problemas para manejar la escoba y siempre se queda atrás. A misfit witch takes to the sky in this wonderful wordless picture-book from Mexico, but finds that her awkward flying contraption - an enchanted monocycle - does not allow her to keep up with the other witches. Falling to earth, she is chastised by the other witches, and left alone. A scarecrow, having witnessed everything, sacrifices his straw and stick, in order to create a new and better flying broom for the witch, allowing her to soar once more...As someone who adores any form of illustrated book about witches - they are a pet project of mine! - I have looked with longing at La bruja y el espantapájaros on more than one occasion, when seeing it included on a list of witchy picture-books over on goodreads. Unfortunately, I do not read Spanish, and have little access to Mexican children's books, however appealing they may be. Then I discovered that the New York Public Library held a digital edition of the book in their collection, and thought: why not take a look, even if only for the artwork? After all, the cover illustration here is gloriously gloomy, and full of spooky promise. I am so very glad I did, as it turns out that Gabriel Pacheco's book is a wordless one, and no knowledge of Spanish is necessary to "read" it. The illustrations are more than enough to carry the story, and are beautiful. They look to be done in a variety of media, including cut-paper and collage elements, and pencil drawing. The witches are both endearing and spooky:Simply wonderful! I would love to see more of Pacheco's work, particularly in a magical or fairy-tale vein, and can only hope some of it becomes more widely available here in the states. Recommended to anyone who enjoys witchy picture-books or wordless narratives.
