 Carmen Tafolla is a poet, speaker, professor emeritus, State Poet Laureate of Texas, and author of more than thirty books, including Fiesta Babies, What Can You Do with a Paleta?, and What Can You Do with a Rebozo? (all available from Random House). Tafolla has received many awards, including the Americas Award, five International Latino Book Awards, and the Charlotte Zolotow Award. She travels to many places across the world, but always comes back to San Antonio, to a home filled with books and surrounded by trees, butterflies, and raccoons. In the 1920s and 1930s, the pecan shellers of San Antonio, Texas, were some of the lowest-paid workers in the nation. They were all Mexican-Americans. Many of them came from families that had lived in Texas for several generations. Some were newly arrived from Mexico poor workers who fled here for safety during the long revolution in their home country.

Wonderful story for a little kid. Honestly, I teared up a little reading it too. As a little girl, Emma Tenayuca saw other kids who were poor, or who couldn't read; she said, "That's not fair!" and worked in her way to change things. "That's not fair!" is a refrain that little kids can understand, and it ties together her work as a little kid and her work as an adult. Little kids learn that when something's not fair, they can do something to fix it.
