You may search near, you may search far, you may search high, you may search low, you may follow the first star on the right and go straight on till morning, but rare will you find a comic as packed to the rafters with sheer shenanigans as this. From the very first page and a night-time tussle with three-eyed foxes leading to a mysterious message about a holy kitten, Lumberjanes kicks off the shenanigans with all the joy and energy and impulsive insanity of a group of friends with not a moment of summer to waste on non-shenanigan-type activity. This comic charms, delights, thrills and warms the cockles of the hardest heart and melts the soul of the most frozen grouch. It's also a masterpiece of fast-paced story-telling that conveys character and setting and background with minimal effort and maximum effect, while pausing only for quiet moments and to take an occasional breath. Not a panel wasted, not an extraneous word-balloon, but every moment packed with everything you need need to know, and a fizzing, popping spray of sheer fun coming out of every page. This is the absolute best.

So much to love. The friendship, the wordplay, the easy feminism/ girl power, the concept. But too crazy for me, and it looks like it'll take a long time to even learn enough about the characters to remember who's who much less their actual selves... and even longer to solve the mystery. I'm not going to commit to that much craziness.

This was EXTREMELY CUTE. I'm not sure if I'll read more - or if I even would have enjoyed it when I was a preteen*; I was not into cute - but it was a fun, clever read.

*This word just percolated into my consciousness. There was no such thing as "tween" yet when I was a lass. I think I prefer "tween"; "preteen" makes me think of training bras and other middle school awkwardness.

This was an adorable and funny book that I would definitely recommend. It's a fun story along the lines of Squirrel Girl and Giant Days, and a good "intro to comics" book. I was disappointed the story arc didn't resolve in the first volume, though, I guess that just means I will have to read keep reading.

Lumberjanes is by far the most adorably awesome thing I have read in a long time. The drawing style is quite cartoonish which makes it wonderful for both adults and children alike and I often recommended it to younger girls at the book store who are looking for something awesome to read. Like Raina Telgemeier, Noelle Stevenson's art direction focuses on girl power and relateability more than anything else and her stylization of her characters is unique and wonderful!

The five girls who make up the core group of "Lumberjanes" all have distinct personalities and they value their friendships with each other above all else. Each and every one of the girls has something unique about them and the whole comic is very LGBTQ and diversity friendly. No two girls are alike and they celebrate each others' differences.

There are not many books, graphic novel or otherwise, that exist I wholeheartedly recommend to people of all ages, but Lumberjanes is definitely one of them!

Oh my, I am soo glad I picked up this bad boy! It was even better than I anticipated!! You will want all your friends to read it so that you can talk about it and try to be as cool as the lumberjanes. Seriously, I want to be on their level. While at a summer camp for "Hardcore Lady-Types" five campers discover something mysterious going on in the wilderness surrounding their cabins. Three eyed foxes, yetis, a river monster, and rumors of a "Holy Kitten" keep the lumberjanes busy and drives their camp counselor up a wall. Hilarious and over the top, this comic amused me to no end. I was sold after the Holy Kitten, but it continued to get better after that, with sayings like, "What in the Joan Jett!?" minor hinting towards gay crushes, mythical creatures, and random rantings, this book has a little something for everyone. This is definitely one that I will buy and will continue to keep up with the series. Soo damn good!

3 things I noticed the second time around:

    -Rosie is TOTALLY Lynda Barry.

-The colors! THE COLORS! I read the first three issues on my tablet, but I wasn't sure how the colors would translate on paper. Holy Mae Jemison! They're so lush and gorgeous.

-I somehow love the Lumberjanes even more than I thought I already did.

Now to decide who I want to be for Project Comic Con in October.

When I heard about Lumberjanes, I was *super* excited. I love fun, empowering stories for young women, and I like recommending them to the young women in my life.

But for me, this was not a personal favorite. I would be willing to bet that there are others who read this and LOVED it, but I was not that person. I felt there was a huge disconnect between the art and the content that made me wonder for whom Stevenson is writing. The art makes this graphic novel feel oriented for younger teens who like manga. Yet there are so.many.references to things from the 1980s and 1990s, like "What the Joan Jett?", "What's the story, Wishbone?", and "I could teach you. But I'd have to charge." For a young person who's a huge pop culture junkie of the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, this would probably be funny. But it made me feel like this book came from a Gen-Xer writing for Gen-Xers. And that's okay. So then write for Gen-Xers and make the art less childish.

There felt like a potential love story or coming-out story arc that really intrigued me, but the fighting-evil-creatures hijinks overshadowed any character development. And that disappointed me, too. But maybe that will take place in the next volume??? One can hope.

I should probably also mention that in middle school and high school, I was not the brash, badass, jump-into-caves-simply-because-I-can type. I was mousy and bookish. So the too-cool-for-school-and-rules kind of kids in literature just don't always do it for me. That's a personal taste issue. Like I said, I bet a lot of people would really enjoy this graphic novel.

As I was trying to put together my review of the first volume in the Lumberjanes series (collaboratively written and drawn by Grace Ellise, Shannon Watters, Noelle Stevenson, & Brooke A. Allen) I realized that it was going to be nigh on impossible for me to formulate new thoughts/observations about further volumes without repeating myself ad nauseam...so a masterpost.

The volumes of this series that I've read thus far:
    1. Beware the Kitten Holy
    2. Friendship to the Max
    3. A Terrible Plan
    4. Out of Time
    5. Band Together

On first beginning the series, I immediately felt like I was somehow starting in the middle as the reader is launched immediately into the inner circle of our main protagonists (Jo, April, Molly, Mal, & Ripley). What initially caught my interest were the excellent illustrations and the various looks of the main characters which are all widely different (much like the characters themselves). [A/N: I want to say here that the illustrative style changed for each of the volumes and I didn't really dig that.] I kept reading because the format of survival manual blended into a narrative arc was unique and I like the idea of a female led story being written and drawn by females. This is a great message for girls who may have felt that the comic book world wasn't for them. That being said, I'm not likely to continue the series beyond these 5 volumes and if I do I won't be reviewing it here unless it totally ends up blowing my mind. It felt gimmicky and at times I felt they were trying too hard and falling into contrived territory. I get that they're trying to be hip and inclusive (major props that there's not only a lesbian couple but a transgender character) but there was so 'trying to be hip' vibe that the story became second fiddle. Strong elements of fantasy, mystery, adventure, and friendship will appeal to all sexes but I don't think I'm the right age demographic (and this is coming from someone who routinely reads picture books). It's a 6/10 for me.

I spent a lot of the book trying to figure out a) which character _this_ one was (I was literally saying to myself, this is the tomboy, this is the girly girl, this is...) and b) what the heck was going on. Magic...maybe? Or Scooby-doo style fakery...running into real magic? or...I'm still very confused, and really not interested in reading any more of this.

This is the first book in the Lumberjanes series; there are ten books in this series right now. This was a very well done graphic novel that I enjoyed a ton. I loved the fantasy, friendship, adventure and humor in this book.

This graphic novel introduces us to a unique group of young women at camp who have a knack for getting into trouble. It’s not just any type of trouble either, they continuously run into bizarre creatures and unexpected adventures. They need to discover the mystery of what is going on here!

The drawing is colorful, well done, and easy to follow. I enjoyed it a lot. This was a hugely entertaining book that was lots of fun to read and laugh-out loud funny while still having a lot of heart.

Overall I loved this first graphic novel and plan on continuing with the series! I would recommend to those who enjoy humorous fantasy set in a contemporary setting.

i love noelle stevenson so much and i love this concept and the characters soso much but honestly the writing here was p weak?? and not due to necessary exposition or gaining familiarity w the chars, that all goes smoothly

but the plotting and a lot of the dialogue and the way transitions are framed is all really messy; def not as polished as nimona, which was a mess--but a beautiful mess! and the messiness was worked into the very concept! this comes off more as rushed, confused or conflicted; hoping the next issues r better

Lumberjanes, Vol. 1: Beware the Kitten Holy introduces us to the five butt-kicking best friends that are residing in cabin Roanoke for the summer at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. April, Jo, Mal, Molly, & Ripley have noticed some pretty strange goings-on this year at camp and, to the perpetual annoyance of their camp counselor, Jen, they're going to get to the bottom of it all while they have each other's backs, earn some badges, and eat a lot of cookies.

Unfortunately, Lumberjanes fell flat for me.

I was slightly wary of purchasing this volume. I'm not as familiar with comics as I'd like to be and I was worried that the rave reviews I'd seen on and off throughout the past year had built up my expectations to unconquerable heights. However, my local library leans more towards westerns than comics so I ended up with this and [book:Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal|20898019] in my bag on a recent book-buying fix, eager to stoke a new interest. It was also the perfect comic to check off one of Book Riot's 2017 Read Harder Challenge tasks with (task #6: read an all-ages comic).

Further bolstering those expectations enthroned at unconquerable heights, I'd previously read [book:Nimona|19351043] and thought Lumberjanes would offer something similar. This was just too ho-hum for me to feel invested. The artwork is okay but the layout feels off in places. It's nice to see some positive female friendships in a comic, especially between younger girls, but the plot feels like a disconnected jumble with no real build from one development to the next. Similarly, it's nice to see more inclusion in a group of main characters but this doesn't excuse a lacking plot either.

It's a quick read but not a volume I would recommend purchasing. It feels more like something to read online.

This is a fun graphic novel that I've been hearing about since it was published.

From the back of the book: "At Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqui Thistle Crumpet's camp for hardcore lady types, things are not what they seem.”

Five Lumberjane Scout campers sneak away from their counselor for a night time adventure. There is more in the dark than they expect, and it begins a variety of adventures with magical and supernatural challenges. Even their meeting with the camp of too-good-to- believe boy campers nearby takes a sinister turn.

The camp director seems unsurprised and calmly unperturbed as long as the girls keep their motto: Friendship to the max!

Fun, quick read of five kick butt girls, and of course, to be continued in the next volume. Hooray!

Both my husband and daughter insisted I read this series. It is something special. Over the top and wry, 5 girls in Roanoke cabin at Lumberjanes camp have adventures while avoiding or ditching their frazzled counselor. Each episode is preceded by a half page of text describing a merit badge, including the Pungeon Master badge, which we see before it is described.

A comic about a group of friends at a scout camp for “hardcore lady-types” who keep having unexpected supernatural adventures. (One of the writers, Noelle Stevenson, did the cover and illustrations for Fangirl, and I read her solo graphic novel Nimona.)

It's very quick to read. After four issues/chapters, I don’t feel like I’ve read enough to have strong opinions about the characters yet, or about the direction their story is going in. But I’m curious!

I'd been hearing about this comic for a while, then I received it on my birthday from Josh. I didn't really know what to expect from this other than awesome!girl!comics! At first I was a little thrown by all the paranormal elements and the "this is not what my Girl Scout camp was like"-ness of this comic.

So I'm glad I had the TPB and not individual comics, because once I had enough time to get used to what this actually was, I did get into it. I like the book's high standards for girlness, the diversity of characters, the richness of the colors, and the exclamations. Okay, really, they had me at the exclamations. Which go like, "Holy Mae Jemison!" or, "Where the Phillis Wheatley were you?" I mean, those kind of exclamations could have been custom-built for me. I need to start working them into my daily usage. Like, right now.

April, Mal, Ripley, Molly, and Jo are just spending their summer at camp, working hard to earn their various Lumberjanes badges. But seriously weird things keep happening. Attack foxes and river monsters are just some of the things the girls encounter that would make anyone ask, "What the junk?!" Can the girls figure out what's going on and keep their cabin leader, Jen, from having heart attack over their recurring disappearances at the same time?

I went into the first Lumberjanes knowing I'd love it as so many other readers whose tastes I respect already do. And I was not disappointed. This first volume is just as fun as I'd expected. And by the second chapter I'd finally managed to get a handle on which girl went with which name. I'll definitely be continuing on with this series.

This was not at all what I expected! I honestly thought it would just be girls having adventures while camping; and while it is, it also isn't. There is a whole other story going on and it's all bizarre and supernatural. Strange things are afoot and the poor Lumberjanes keep stumbling into weirdness. It's kinda like a female cast of the Goonies meets the Brothers Winchester. They are quirky and fun characters. Their reaction to things and their terminology is so 80's! It's like stepping back into my childhood. I got this because I thought it would be something fun that both my daughter and myself could read and enjoy. Well, this was a really fun read, and I have a feeling my daughter will like it even more than I did!

SO GREAT. This is a must read for people age 5-105, but is especially great for teens. This is the story of a mysterious summer camp and the girls who try to get to the bottom of the weird goings-on. Young queers get screentime in a way that neither victimizes or objectifies them, the catchphrases are so cute, the girls have diverse personalities, appearances, and representations, and the plots are wacky and fun. One of my fave comics in a long long time.
