George Orwell
George Orwell (1903–1950), the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, was an English novelist, essayist, and critic. He was born in India and educated at Eton. After service with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, he returned to Europe to earn his living by writing. An author and journalist, Orwell was one of the most prominent and influential figures in twentieth-century literature. His unique political allegory Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with the dystopia of 1984 (1949), which brought him worldwide fame.

- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5It's been 30 years since I've read this book and I can see why I hadn't had the desire reread it before now. While there are a good number of thought-provoking lines, the overall story is rather unengaging. Winston is an unlikeable character, the relationship with his girlfriend is definitely "insta-love" (which is annoying no matter the genre), and it is never enjoyable (in my opinion) to read a book inside a book - which, in this case, was just an excuse for massive amounts of info dumping. Overall, I find that I much prefer Brave New World for both the horrifying (yet believable) society that is created and the emotional involvement.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5Summary: A guy living a repressive society starts to ask questions and has to face up to the authorities.
Things I liked:
The more personal reflections of the main character.
The setting was very thorough and painted a chilling view of a possible world view.
Still relevant ideas even though it was written a long time ago.
Things I thought could be improved:
POV was a bit impersonal at times.
Couple of fairly large chunks of exposition felt a bit forced and smug.
Highlight: When he recalls his mother with the chocolate. - Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5Available as a free ebook from Project Gutenberg Australia. It's famous, and well-written, and full of ideas and warnings, and presumably it's the source of terms now used in popular culture (e.g. Big Brother). But be aware that it's very VERY bleak. In particular, the torture scenes are disturbing and awful, and there's one long lecture (from a book the main character is reading) that I regarded as a specific torture against all readers.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Describes very aptly, the future we are headed towards. Although it is horrifying to think of how we get there but given the recent exposures of various state surveillance agencies, it is plausible that by 2084 or maybe 2184 we will certainly be there if we don't make the right choices now.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5It is startling how many similarities there are in today's world. A sense of the main character's hopelessness and entrapment is imparted vividly through the text of this novel. The intrusive nature of this stifling world is so detailed, the reader will get consumed by the angst of the the main character and will be relieved yet a little sad when at the close of the book.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Powerful, inspiring.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Having first read this book after the sept. 11th attacks and seeing us enter into a war against a faceless enemy (terror) i was shocked. The similarities to the world which Orwell painted in '84 and to the one I was currently living were too much. Every person living in the US should be forced to read this book before being allowed to vote. Period.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5Wow, this was great! I think newspeak is texting and chatting today -- are we digressing into an Engsoc society? this is an amazing book - i don't know if the moral is that we can't possibly win in a fight against a super-power society or if we need to combine efforts and keep on plugging...
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5Next re-read WILL be in english. Still so relevant today it's freaky.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5I have probably read 1984 more times than any other book, and it never loses its fascination. In Junior High school, the oppressiveness of the police state (and the sex scenes) stood out, along with Newspeak, which was a lot of fun to play with when sending notes back and forth. Later on, the psychological and political aspects come more to the fore. I only wish Orwell had called it 2034 or 2084. It would be tragic if it falls off the required reading lists because someone thinks it is outdated.
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5Scary to think what our world could be like with a bog brother watching over us. That is the only reason to recommend this book. It'll scare the fribriber frabbers out of you if you have an ounce of sense.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5never trust fear news
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5I must NOT be as bright as others. I did not like this book. I did not think it was great. I would not recommend it. Classic or not...it was slow and boring. Maybe someone can tell me what is so wonderful about it.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5Every American should read this book.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5This Book got to me a Lot
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Forceful, provocative and thrilling.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5A fascinate book and must read as part of a literary repertoire. Though the fateful year has come and gone, the themes in the book are still quite relevant today.
- Calificación: 1 de 5 estrellas1/5A classic that if the former Soviet Union was still around might still resinate with the reader. Without the knowledge of this past this book seems hollow. This was a especially tough read that loses whatever flow that it had in the middle. This inclusion was unneccesary and the book would have been much better without the book in a book.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Doubleplusgood & powerful
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5Probably one of my all time favorite books right up there with Le Miserables. It amazes me how George Orwell knew the future way back then and the absolute evils society is capable of. Amazing!
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5A fantastic dark cautionary tale that just had me turning page after page. I've never devoured a book like this so fast! And I must confess that the end had me in tears. Perhaps I'm weak-willed or too easily affected by this sort of thing, but the rebel in me gave a disappointed whimper, consumed by hopelessness, as I read the final words. Thoroughly haunting, and demands to be read again and again.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5Pretty enjoyable book. Definitely deserves the title of "classic". Some of the predictions are terrifyingly accurate in describing how our own country is functioning in the present day. Read mainly for the plot so I probably ended up missing many of the more subtle literary elements.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/51984 has come and left, some may say that this book has lost its importance after the collapse of communism. I think that if we want to keep our freedom than we need to pay attention to the politicians we elect and the agencies that they are suppose to regulate. The important point about 1984 is that if you don't pay attention 1984 can always become a reality. flag
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5This is honestly one of my all time favorite books. Though in the beginning it is a bit difficult to understand, I guarantee that it will all make sense as you continue to read it. George Orwell is a phenomenal author and I was hanging onto every sentence right up to the last four words. This novel has most sincerely changed my view on the world and most definitely a prolific tale. It is a classic and should not be ignored.
- Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5In typical Orewellian fashion, this book was ahead of its time in regard to social commentary and equally fitting to still be read today. A definite classic that is a spot-on social commentary.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5A chilling portrayal of what society can easily become when we entrust to much societal power in the hands of government. A hooking plotline keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat, anticipating a sudden deception or other plot twist. The book certainly raises some philosophical questions regarding the power that we allow government to wield, and it serves as a chilling admonishment of a realistic future that may lay in humanity's fate.
- Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5Even though the book is classic, it was not a captivating read. Each page passed slowly. It seemed grimy, dismal, and depressing. It served as a good warning to our society. George Orwell's use of symbolism and characters were effective, however. This story was very thought provoking.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5The classic dystopian tale and Orwell's greatest work. Orwell was a great writer and this chilling, exciting and fascinating story is testament to that.. Reading this book, you get a real feeling of the kind of fear of totalitarianism people really felt in 1948. Our concepts of dystopias and utopias wouldn't exist without this book.
- Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5You can't go through life without having read this book. It is as important now as it was when it was written.
