I wasn’t familiar with this author but listened to her presentation as part of my lifelong study of Spanish. She was born and raised in El Paso, TX, where I grew up, and the public school system there wisely included formal Spanish as part of the primary school curriculum. I was pleased to hear Ms. Mora extolling the virtues of being educated and literate in both Spanish and English. Unfortunately this is not a given, even in border areas and other cities with large populations of Hispanics; too often children in these families grow up speaking informal Spanish and Spanglish, but with no literature or grammar. I will be reading and listening to more of her work.
