The Covid pandemic has left us with things both good and bad. The bad things we don't need to remember, but one of the good things to come out of the pandemic is that it gave us more time to enjoy doing things that the hectic pace of everyday life does not often allow us to do, things such as reading, having fun with the family, or enjoying a quiet glass of wine in front of the telly. Many of you may have heard the name Mencía in the Netfiix series Elite. Apart from being the name of one of the characters in the series, Mencía is also the name of the grape variety that we are going to take a look at today.
This varietal originated in the northwest of Spain, halfway between Castilla León and Galicia. It is a red grape with small, compact, garnet-coloured bunches, neutral in flavour and low in acidity.
The wines made from this grape are known for their ageing ability and characteristic velvety palate.
In this article, we will explore some Mencía wines with magnificent colours and aromas that are reminiscent of fresh red and black fruit, aromatic undergrowth herbs and flowers, especially violets. On the palate, these are wines with an extremely pleasant mouthfeel and decent length.
