VINOS ROSADOS
Since time immemorial, rosés have in many ways been perceived as the ugly duckling of the wine world. But today, in this report, we are going to try to change this perception. For this summer special, we have tried numerous rosés, made in different areas with different varietals and in different styles. In Spain, the general belief of most wine consumers is that rosé is a blend of red and white wine. They do not know that to make a rosé the must is left to macerate for a few hours with the skins after the red grapes have been pressed. The longer the time, the stronger the colour.
There are, however, some rosés that are indeed made by blending red and white grapes or wines together. The white grapes endow the reds with greater acidity and, therefore, a greater degree of freshness. What’s more, people often don’t know that the vast majority of rosés are generally made in stainless steel vats, although we can find some that have been aged in oak barrels. Work on the lees (deposits of dead yeast) is becoming more and more common. This gives the wine extra body and smoothness and avoids having to add sugar.
In terms of varietals, we can safely say that the main varietal used to make rosés in the different Spanish designations of origin is the Garnacha. But other varietals are also utilised including Monastrell, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Although some years ago the “vox populi” was that Navarre was the great region for rosés, today we can find magnificent rosés from the Balearic Islands, Galicia, Levante and even Extremadura.
We have really enjoyed putting together this report and above all tasting and showcasing the different rosé wines that accompany this issue of Selectus Wines.
CHEERS! Desde tiempos inmemorables, los rosados han sido, en muchos aspectos, el patito feo de los vinos en general. Pero hoy, desde estas letras, intentaremos cambiar esta percepción ya que en este especial de verano hablaremos de muchos rosados, elaborados en diferentes zonas con distintas variedades y estilos. En nuestras tierras la percepción que tiene la gran masa de consumidores de vino, es que un vino rosado es mezcla de blanco y tinto. No saben que para hacer un vino rosado lo que se hace es dejar macerar unas horas las pieles o hollejos con el mosto una vez prensada la uva. A más tiempo más color. Lo que si que vamos a encontrar es que hay algunos rosados que se elaboran mezclando uvas tintas y blancas. Las blancas aportan acidez a las tintas y, por tanto, más elemento de refresco.
También se desconoce que la gran mayoría de rosados, a nivel general se elaboran en acero inoxidable, aunque podemos encontrar algunos que hayan pasado por barrica. El trabajo de lías (madres del vino) cada vez es más frecuente para que el vino tenga una suavidad extra y no haga falta añadir azúcar. A nivel de variedades podemos decir que la gran variedad para elaborar rosados en las distintas denominaciones de origen, es la Garnacha. Pero también encontramos variedades como la Monastrell, el Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon o Merlot.
Aunque hace años se denominaba de manera “vox populi” que Navarra era la gran zona de rosados, hoy podemos encontrar magníficos rosados que van desde las Baleares hasta Galicia, pasando por Levante e incluso llegando a Extremadura.
Hemos disfrutado mucho con el trabajo hecho y sobretodo catando y dando voz a los distintos vinos rosados que acompañan este número de Selectus Wines.

Irache is the wine of the Monastery of Navarre. It is the continuation of the good work carried out by the local monks for centuries. It is one of the most important wineries in Navarre with a range of wines that offers excellent value for money. Its work with the local grape varieties gives this wine a good nose and above all a smooth and very interesting palate. This wine is luscious, elegant, long and literally bursting with flavour.
Irache, es el vino de Monasterio de Navarra. El relevo de el trabajo hecho por monjes en la zona durante siglos. Una de las bodegas mas importantes de Navarra con una gamma de vinos con magnifica relación calidad precio. Su trabajo con las variedades de la zona le aportan al vino una buena nariz y sobretodo un paso de boca suave pero con registro. La sapidez se dispara, es un vino con muy buen sabor de boca y sobretodo goloso, elegante y largo.

Pagos de Araiz is located in Olite, Navarre, and its portfolio of wines includes two rosés, one they call a rosado and one they call a rosé. Today we are reviewing their Rosé. This is a pale wine made with Garnacha as a young wine but from vines over 20 years old. It is ideal as a welcome or aperitif drink served with starters. Many people enjoy it paired with cheeses, especially soft cheeses such as Brie, but also with blue and semi-cured cheeses.
