Blanca, peluda, gris, tintorera... El encanto de la uva de moda trasciende el éxito de la consagrada garnacha tinta multiplicando el interés por toda esta familia varietal.
Garnacha is much more than a grape variety: it is an entire varietal family, which displays its splendours in a rich variety of characters, profiles and colours. These have been created by the adaptation of clones to different terrains, viticultural practices and even genetic manipulations.
If ampelographic experts have got it right, the “mother” of all Garnachas is none other than the mighty Garnacha Tinta. Most likely of Aragonese origin, over the centuries it has extended its dominions throughout most of the Iberian Peninsula, reaching as far as the other side of the Pyrenees and the islands of the Mediterranean. Vilified until very recently (it was only considered suitable for the production of feisty, alcoholic and short-lived wines), in the last decade, a new generation of wine growers has recognised its value as a noble but long-suffering variety. It stoically endures the harshness of the driest, hottest climates and the most arid, stony land, to bring out the character of the much-vaunted “terroir”, creating highly versatile wines: fresh and delicate in the Sierra de Gredos mountains, succulent in the region of Aragon, distinguished in La Rioja, elegant in Priorat...
