At what point do we identify that our children’s behaviors, feelings, and attraction that are different from the expected norms?When do we consider our child’s feelings?How do we measure, gauge, validate our child’s feelings?How do we feel their feelings…their pain…and not confuse it with ours?How do we manage this unexpected and visibly new situation?Camilo says “In the documentary Nature Dazzles, children and teachers were interviewed at The Grove Community School in Toronto during Gender Splendour week in April 2017. The film shows the children engaged in workshops designed for both non-binary-conforming and cisgender-identifying children. The workshops provide them with tools to ponder, question, and defy gender stereotypes prevalent in society, culture, and the media. The documentary suggests that this progressive approach should be adopted in all schools across Canada to increase awareness of violence against LGBT children and teens. The goal of the film is to sensitize viewers to the struggles this group of children experiences in the educational system.Serafina, Mia, Elorah, Lulu, Aimée, Gabriel, Zaylie, Jai, Maiyan, Cole, Ozzy, Lila, Indigo, Komii, Clove, Ben and Nomi, students of The Grove Community School, act as interviewees or social actors in the documentary. They transmit to the audience an articulated speech, presenting themselves as natural pedagogues, with perhaps a deeper understanding on the subject, that we adults have. On the other hand, the pedagogy behind the need to teach students to examine gender closely and to challenge gender stereotypes through games and school activities, is well illustrated by the teachers and the school principal.
