Información de este libro electrónico

With humor and warmth, this children's picture book raises awareness about poverty and hunger. Best friends Sofia and Maddi live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school, and play in the same park, but while Sofia's fridge at home is full of nutritious food, the fridge at Maddi's house is empty. Sofia learns that Maddi's family doesn't have enough money to fill their fridge and promises Maddi she'll keep this discovery a secret. But because Sofia wants to help her friend, she's faced with a difficult decision: to keep her promise or tell her parents about Maddi's empty fridge. Filled with colorful artwork, this storybook addresses issues of poverty with honesty and sensitivity while instilling important lessons in friendship, empathy, trust, and helping others. A call to action section, with six effective ways for children to help fight hunger and information on anti-hunger groups, is also included.

Sofía prometió no decir nada. ¿Qué puede hacer entonces?

Maddi's Playground is a wonderfully sensitive book about the issue of poverty, hunger and compassion. The author does an amazing job at creating a very real situation that happens when children get embarrassed about their unfortunate circumstance. The only issue I found with this book is at the end when the family with plenty helps the family in need and it somewhat seems to end there. But it could create a conversation about how people in poverty and hunger need long term fixes, not just food for the night....

Maddi and her friend Sophia go over to her house to play one day and Sophia notices that Maddi has no food in her fridge. Maddi asks Sophia not to tell anyone. Sophia wants to help her friend so everyday she brings Maddi food to put in the fridge. But eventually she has to break her promise and tell her mom that Maddi needs food. Sophia's family helps Maddi and gets her food. This book shows true friendship and shows poverty. The illustrations are cute and perfect for little kids. I think a lot of kids could read this book and understand that some people do live without food and that we sometimes need to to help. You could also do a volunteering activity with a classroom.

After a tiring trip to the playground, Sofia finds out that Maddi has no food in her fridge. Maddi makes Sofia promise not to tell anyone that her family has no food, but Sofia wants to help her friend. Sofia decides to pack her friend the leftovers that her family ate the night before. The food that she puts in her bag spoils or does not travel well. Finally, Sofia brings Maddi a burrito that the two can actually eat, as well as some other items. Later, Sofia is finally able to climb a rock wall that Maddi had tried unsuccessfully to get her to do. The author parallels Maddi's helping Sofia climb the wall to Sofia's trying to give Maddi food. The friends are able to successfully help each other. At the end of the book, there is a statistics page about hunger and how kids can help. The book can be used in the classroom to teach students about childhood hunger, the meaning of friendship, and why it is important to help the people around you.

A dragon has moved into a young person's sandcastle! Their parents are too busy to see it, and their sister doesn't care either. But our main character and the dragon have a great time playing in the sand. But when the dragon gets hungry, he starts eating all the sandwhiches and messing up all the food! He even throws sand at the little sister! Finally, everyone's had enough of the dragon!
I thought this book was adorable and I think it would be a good creative writing topic for young writers. I'd like to hear what students would do if they had a dragon in their sandcastle!

I thought this was a really cute story. The main message of this book is to teach children to follow directions and be respectful of people. One thing I really liked about this book was the main concept. Children have a really hard time following directions. The author did a great job by making it silly with a dinosaur. I also liked how easy it was for children to relate to. For example, in the book the dinosaur was blowing bubbles out of his drink. Alot of children do this and like to play with their food even though they know it's not OK. Lastly, I really loved the illustrations. It is important for a picture book to have good pictures and this story really demonstrated that. The pictures were very animated and vibrant. They also contained lots of detail. For example in one picture you could even see the dinosaur tracks on the beach. This really helps students with comprehension and understanding the story more.

This book is cute. I loved reading it to my daughter. It is about a boy who builds a perfect sand castle, and then a dragon moves in. My favorite part of this book is when the boy eats all of the sandwiches, and pretends that the dragon ate them. The theme of this book is about using your imagination. I would use this book for younger students with active imaginations.

One of my favorite stories, a small boy with a wonderful imagination builds a perfect sandcastle while at he beach with his family. Immediately a precocious dragon moves in and that is when the beach action begins to become magical. This is my new favorite summer read. The art is bright, the story is honest, the problem is real for many children in our protagonist's place...a recommended read. This would be a wonderful start to a classroom publication...When a Dragon moves in....

I like this book because it can really get a child to thinking about the difference between imagination and lying. As the Dragon does things in the story you can see that in the illustrations someone or something else is actually doing whatever the dragon is doing. With reading this book you can explain to children that it's okay to imagine things but there comes a point when they need to stop and take responsibility for something that they may have done that they are blaming on an imaginary friend.

“If you build a perfect sandcastle,
    a dragon will move in.
    He’ll settle in all cozy
and peep at you from inside…
and you’ll wonder how you ever got so lucky.”

There are a lot of advantages to have your own dragon. Bullies won’t bother you and you’ll have your own built-in marshmallow toaster. Still, there are also problems.

Amazing illustrations that are both smart and silly make this book a great read.

This is a cute story along the lines of Laura Numeroff's If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series. Could be used as a mentor text to inspire kids creative writing.
