The perfect balance between technology and craftsmanship is what distinguishes the work of Mayice duo, the name behind the architects and designers Marta Alonso and Imanol Calderón. Their pieces have a touch of magic, of trompe l'oeil that tricks the eye and points it to the intriguing path of the unreal. The prolific use of transparent glass helps the to--and-fro of rays of light that cast unexpected shadows. They skillfully maneuver the mysterious charm of the interaction between light and shadow and use it to produce a serene, pure and subliminal impact in the spaces they create, providing a delicate and subtle sensory experience.
What is your relationship with artisanal techniques and how do you value them in comparison to industrial manufacturing?
We have come to artisanal manufacturing processes out of pure necessity, it is the only way to be able to make prototypes and experiment with them. Even if we work with computers and draw by hand, we are not able to be confident about what we have designed until we have a prototype in our hands. The amount of information that something that you can use and touch gives us is not comparable to other data. The first prototype we made was a stool, when we contacted the industry theyCristales de La Granja, the master Diego Rodríguez always told us, “perfection does not exist” For us, imperfections are beautiful and unique. We are currentiy living in a time where artificial intelligence is very common, we consume a huge amount of perfect images and each time we are getting further and further away from reaiity, That is why when we see Science fiction movies, such as Elade Runner, we realize that there comes a time when something as basic as a piece of hand-carved wood is the most real and luxurious thing that can exist.
