He later worked as a commercial fisherman, lived with the Mazatec Indians in Mexico, and studied film and music at Antioch College. Roy left Antioch and turned to science and received a masters and PhD degrees in physics and geophysics from the Swiss Institute of Technology, where he taught and researched for many years. He left academia in 1999 and worked as a coach for young adults on the autistic spectrum.
