He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1950, with graduate study following at the University of Oregon, University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University. He and his wife, Lois Haverland Gill (she was also a teacher), are parents of three children, with six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was an outdoor enthusiast and visitor to the wilderness, mayor of Davis, California, director and president of the Sierra Club, advocate for environmental values, and leader in how to teach writing. In retirement in idyllic Camp Sherman, Oregon, he and Lois have “majored” in travel to four continents and across the U.S. They now winter in Arizona.ver menos
