He enlisted in the Marines in WW2 and experienced combat in the pacific theatre. He was discharged from the Marines at a Naval Air Station in the Pacific Northwest and fell in love with the Northwest. He returned home to Texas for a short time, but then returned to Wenatchee, Washington where he worked for a year and then attended Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington. Later Jim attended graduate school at the University of Washington. He has earned three degrees.
Jim served with, The Navigators organization for two years after college. He then entered the field of education. He has served as a classroom teacher, a school district supervisor, and for six years he served as Supervisor of Audiovisual/Television Services, and later as Administrator of Educational Communications Services, at the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Olympia, Washington.
Jim then accepted the position as Coordinator of Instructional Television Services at Washington State University for sixteen years. While at WSU, Jim and his wife Marlys, served several years as part-time volunteer staff with International Students, Inc. Their son, Greg, and his family live in Oklahoma where Greg heads a Christian school.
Jim served for ten years as Director of ASSIST, an organization which focused on helping Christians learn to be positive witnesses for Christ in the workplace. The organization published journals, newsletters, held workshops and seminars emphasizing the principle of “Tentmaking” as modeled by the Apostle Paul, who often worked as a businessman on his missionary journeys, making tents.
