His first novel, Room 207, was published to great critical acclaim in 2006. It went on to win the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for English Literature and the University of Johannesburg Debut Fiction Prize (both in 2007). The Book of the Dead, Kgebetli’s uncompromising follow-up to Room 207, was published in 2009 and was awarded the K Sello Duiker Memorial Award in 2010. His work has been translated into French and Italian.
