I've read other books by this author and with these characters (or at least some of them). This title was on the sale shelf at the library, so I picked it up.

I should have guessed that the story wouldn't fully end in this book, but I didn't. There's so much build up about the final showdown with Gaea that it was annoying when it hadn't happened. It definitely felt like a deliberate "well now you have to buy the next book" move. Then again, large as this book is, perhaps that's why it ended where it did.

It is nice to see some of the characters growing into themselves.

    Potential Trigger Warnings:
*one character does admit to being attracted to the same sex.
*there's quite a bit of violence
*the series is based on mythology (and some aspect seem "magical")

All of Riordan's books put his heroes though non-stop peril to the point where the reader can barely catch her breath, but this was a whole other level. Not to mention the imagery was completely disgusting.

I really enjoyed this book. After the (literal) cliffhanger ending in Mark of Athena I liked that I don't feel the need to jump into the last book of this series because OMGWTFINEEDTOKNOWWHATHAPPENS. I mean, I'll probably read it next anyway (I may have a Percy Jackson problem), but I don't feel compelled to pick up the book immediately. I can wait until tomorrow!

Anyway, this installment had loads of character development, but even with all that development Piper is still annoying. Her insecurity is really grating, especially since she can just (view spoiler) . We'll see if she gets any better in the next one. I don't know if she has a POV in the final book but it would be nice if she found some self esteem.

I continue to love this series for vast and wide reasons, and this book was just another penny in the tin for Rick where comes to me. I continue to love all the groups, the things they go through, the choices they made. I'm glad Rick took a stand on the controversial issue he did, because I think there need to be more LBGT characters in every single type of YA fiction out there.

I'm holding out breathlessly for the next book in this series and the conclusion to it all.

Incredible is not strong enough of a word to describe how I feel about this book. It was difficult for me to put it down - which is true of all of the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus books I've read thus far, but even more true with this installment. Riordan continues to seamlessly integrate rich stories of mythology with the lives and adventures of the demigods. But this one is where I felt so many of the characters came into their own. There are great personal challenges for several of The Seven (and others) and so much growth and character development. As the penultimate book of the series, I thought Riordan did a great job of presenting this epic part of their adventure whilst also setting up what is likely to be an even more epic final battle.

Do I really have to wait until October to find out how it all ends??

This is as charming as a journey through Tartarus, even the parts that aren't literally so. A danger bested every few chapters, lessons learned, truths revealed, costs paid. Supper high body count, but all monsters, even the good monsters. Only read if you are a real fan. I meant to quit with the previous volume and would have except that this meets a difficult challenge.

This book took me so long to finish I am actually ashamed! But I tried to read it while in the middle of a reading slump... not my brightest idea.

    Anyways, on to the review

I have loved every single Rick Riordan book I have read so far and this one was no exception.

The characters' growth was so impressive, and everyone kept evolving and learning to be better than before.
I loved how each character embraced his/her flaws and worked on using them to his/her favor, and how they all helped each other to get through things, not just battles.
I'm definitely loving the friendships on board of the Argo II

Despite the terror Percy and Annabeth went through in Tartarus, the two characters that broke my heart the most in this book were actually Leo and Nico.
Poor Leo, always doubting himself, thinking he wasn't good enough finally someone who valued and loved him (Okay Calypso wasn't who I would've picked for him but still!) but he had to leave her.
And Nico! my precious little cinnamon roll! I felt so bad for him! He was the outcast, everyone was creeped out by him because he was a child of Hades, no one ever really reached out for him and the poor thing had to learn how to live on his own, but he also had to fall for someone who couldn't love him back, and since he wasn't for the same time he was living in, accepting himself was even harder!
I felt bad for him everything Percy and Annabeth even looked at each other.

Now don't get me wrong I love them, and I ship them so hard! But still.

Bob the Titan was the little ray of sunshine in the dark moments of this book! and I loved that so freaking much! I think he was my favorite character in this book.

All in all, another beautiful addition to a great series, I can't wait to know how would Rick Riordan finish it.

THIS REVIEW INCLUDES SPOILERS... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
(but come on who are we kidding most of you guys have probably read this)

I waited for a few days to review this because if I do right after reading it, all I'd be typing would be afhsaifjsifsaifjfriweruiw my Percabeth feels osjfsojfsof tears omg Bob Damasen ghsaogjg NICO hgaisfsjs Cleo huhu why Rick why jskgjsdgj more tears
    ...that kind of stuff.

So in my sober, calm presence of mind right now I think I can phrase my words better.. I think. sahgshgksjfs

EACH BOOK GETS BETTER. Yes. I know it's typical, the fast-paced action in all of Riordan's books, and this does not disappoint in delivering adventures in the span of.. two weeks, I guess?

Why this book is the best (so far) though:
    1. There are much, much more shockers here.

    a. NICO :( I just feel so bad for him, it's like he never got to be really happy in all seven books (starting from The Titan's Curse). And it's like all he can do is detach himself. Nico I ship us please know that huhu ily

    b. Calypso was a welcome character. I wanted Leo to have someone else for him, you know? And the closure between Leo and Hazel was a good thing. Especially loved the hate-love thing between Cleo, and that they really didn't start well, yet in the end... :"> But please, I wish they meet again. I wish they have a happy ending. :(

    2. Percabeth moments!!! Look, the issue I have with epic books is I never get to have something beyond the epilogue. You spend five, seven books and then your OTP just gets together on the final parts. This is why fans make do with fanfics. But here... well, this is the continuation of the PJ&tO series, and I really love reading about Percy and Annabeth... together. Nothing can contest this pair. They are so fit for each other. They find their way out to Tartarus together and it's just... idk they define the word "soulmates" for me I guess.

    3. BIGGEST FEELS AWARD GOES TO... (drumroll) who else but BOB AND DAMASEN. Seriously. Never cried when Nico admitted liking Percy, never (but almost) cried when Leo and Calypso parted. But when Damasen came and said he "changed his fate"... when Bob insisted on staying behind so Percy and Annabeth could go back up... that got me. Right in the feels. These creatures were intended to wreak havoc and do evil deeds... yet they had the most golden hearts. Knowing that breaks mine.

    4. I still don't like Piper and Jason much, but at least I kinda got along better with them in this book. I like it when Jason finally admitted that he belongs to CBH.. or at least wants to. He was so cloudy in the past books, like you can never read him good.

    5. Also, Frank being praetor was awesome. I think he'd rock that position. //edit HAZEL WAS ALSO AMAZING HAHAHAHAHA how could I forget her. Omg I feel guilty. Anyways I never knew someone SO good with the Mist til Hazel came along. And she's now waaay better at it than Thalia so that's saying something.

Pretty much it though. Those are the highlights, for me.

Also, the ending quotations killed me. Now every time I see stars I'm more likely to remember Bob.. and say hello to these shining things, for him :((( Okay tears tears tears

Best advance Christmas present I gave myself, ever.
The Blood of Olympus!!!!!!! I'm bloody scared and excited and nervous for you all at the same time :((( :)

I last read this book a year or two ago, but it was my favorite book by Riordan ever. It centered on Percy and Annabeth and their journey through Tartarus. We definitely get to see more of the pair in this book than in any of the other Heroes of Olympus books. Fans of Percy Jackson will surely enjoy this epic book. As I said earlier its easily my favorite Rick Riordan Novel and fans of Percy and Annabeth will love it.

    Contains slight spoilers.

I'm so ready for the next book to come out. This was definitely the best so far. The previous book ended in a huge CH-this one not so much thank the gods. HOH has so many emotional aspects. The characters were so touching.
Sacrifice: “Tell the sun and stars hello for me.” -Bob the Titian (Iapetus)
Yes, that teared me up a bit.
The ever-comedic Leo has a philosophical moment:
“I figure the world is basically a machine. I don't know who made it, if it was the Fates, or the gods, or the capital-G god or whatever. But it chugs along the way it's supposed to most of the time. Sure, little pieces break off and stuff goes haywire once in a while, but mostly... things happen for a reason.”
Everyone character has their moments in this book. The biggest moment definitely belongs to Nico.
“I had a crush on Percy," Nico spat. "That's the truth. That's the big secret.”
I was so not expecting that!
I can't wait for the next book. I think this series is finally going to come down to an epic battle.

Solid and engaging installment in Riordan's Greek/Roman mythology series. There's still a bit of teenage angst, but the demigods are so busy fighting and problem-solving that they don't have much time for self-pity. And although Tartarus scenes are scary, even the darkest bits are leavened with humor. Riordan's also done a good job making the main characters unique individuals who still form a cohesive group. This fourth book sets up things nicely for "The Blood of Olympus", without resorting to the figurative and literal cliffhanger that ends "The Mark of Athena".

This is probably the heaviest book in the series so far with a trip through Tartaros for Percy and Annabeth and the crew of the Argo Two worrying so much about their friends. There are still some bright spots and humor throughout the story. This is also probably the grossest when you consider what Tartaros is made of. I love how well researched this story is and the creativity that goes into modernizing all of it. I can't wait to see what happens next.

At the end of the last installment, Percy and Annabeth get caught in a giant web which pulls them through an opening and they fall into Tartarus, used as a dungeon of torment and suffering and prison for numerous monsters. To survive, Annabeth and Percy must make their way through the abyss to the Doors of Death where hopefully their friends will be waiting to free them.

Percy and Annabeth's encounters in the abyss are filled with danger frequently offset by amusing interactions with monsters that aren't all bad.

Meanwhile, above, the remaining quest members are encountering their own monster problems trying to reach the Doors of Death on their side (first they have to figure where that would be.)

The story was fun and full of action - will definitely have to read the last SOON!

One of the most curious characters of the series, Nico di Angelo, becomes a focus in this book. He's an interesting character who develops in a way that suits Riordan's patterns but may frustrate some readers. I won't spoil it, of course, but I found myself both appreciative of the move but also a little irritated at the habitual tokenism Riordan continues to display. Even so, Nico at least is a character who has been developing from the beginning, so he gets a fuller treatment here and it is well-deserved.

The demigod gang has been split, so this volume is all about bringing them back together. It also introduces some random side characters -- a gassy polecat, a former-enemy-giant-turned-friend called Bob, a ghostly saber-toothed kitten named Small Bob, among others. At times, it's hard to remember the vast numbers of side characters the series has accumulated and how they all relate and what their back stories are, but in their individual moments they typically add a great deal of charm and fun, which is needed now as our heroes are in the darkest of places. Literally and metaphorically, it's very dark in here.

At this point in the series, one feels a little exhausted at the classical pattern of another followed by yet another island/quest/god/reward, but it is a classic after all, so Riordan sticks with what he knows. If one is exhausted by the overly-repetitive plot structure, though, one may be entertained by the imaginative descriptions of the settings previously unseen (and, once seen, hard to forget even if you want to) and the even more monsters. Though, in truth, even Riordan seems to be running out of monsters, so most are familiar faces here. If you've enjoyed the series up to this point, you are likely comfortable with these patterns. In truth, whilst reading I was pleasantly caught up in them myself. The series as a whole continues to be fun, as long as you don't think about it too hard. I found this book to be one of the most intense of the series, so keep in mind that, for younger readers, this might inspire some nightmares.

Oh man, I’m now through the penultimate book in the series. It’s almost entirely over. I’m not sure if I’m ready, but I guess I have to be. The Heroes of Olympus continues to be a very different experience for me from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Though I love the increased stakes and the addition of more romance, I’m oddly finding them much less emotional reads. Even so, I don’t want to say goodbye to the characters that I’ve grown so close to over many years (their time) and months (my time).

My problem with this second series can be boiled down easily to one element. I mean, there are actually multiple issues, I suspect, but I’ll unpack those once I finish the series and know for sure how they end up getting handled. In this book and all of the previous ones in HoO, my biggest obstacle has been Piper. In The Lost Hero, she was okay. I’d been warned the new cast wasn’t as delightful, and she wasn’t as bad as I expected. Starting last book, she surpassed my expectations of awfulness. Rick Riordan keeps trying to make Piper happen.

The issue with Piper isn’t that she’s done something incredibly horrible or that she says horrible things. For the most part, she’s just boring. Incredibly, mind-numbingly boring. If the perspectives were in first person, I would probably end up taking an impromptu nap any time I reached a Piper chapter. I never thought she was interesting, but in the last couple of books it’s gotten worse. For one thing, Riordan seems determined to make me a) respect Piper’s awesome abilities and b) care about her romance with Jason. Unfortunately, I think Piper’s abilities are a joke and that her relationship with Jason is doomed.

What happened in The House of Hades was that I would be riding high, heading for an ocean of feels and then BAM! My feels vessel would slam into a wall of boring. Every time I hit a Piper chapter, I would lose my momentum through the book and it would basically reset the feels meter back down to zero. I should have had a lot of feels, but she kept interrupting.

On the plus side, pretty much everyone else is very much improving. Frank and Hazel are holding steady as not annoying, but still aren’t of great interest to me. Surprisingly, Jason actually got a lot better in The House of Hades. He’s actually learning to make jokes; they’re not especially funny, but he’s trying! Where Piper honestly doesn’t give a shit about anyone but Jason, he’s really learned to care about the other demigods. His interactions with Nico are some of the best moments in the book.

Speaking of Nico, MY POOR BABY. Guh. This book should have been made of me sobbing from Nico feels, if only stupid interrupting Piper hadn’t gotten in the way. I do have a lot of thoughts about the Nico plot. This is one of those things where I want to see how stuff plays out, because I’m not sure if it will be handled well or not. Still, I’m glad of the revelation, albeit nervous about how it will be handled ultimately.

Leo, who has been vaguely annoying to me, has finally become a character I actually like. He gets to develop more of a serious side. I very much appreciate the levity he adds, since he’s the only other demigod aside from Percy who’s able to laugh at the dark stuff. However, seeing that there’s more to him than comedy and a desire for a girlfriend was really nice. Also, seeing him be less comedic was a wake up call to some of the other kids on the quest. Most importantly, HIS SHIP IS THE CUTEST THING EVER.

Then there’s Percy and Annabeth in Tartarus. Holy shit. Best part of the book no doubt. The Percabeth is strong, partly because they don’t moon over each other constantly. They have sweet moments where they’re sincere, but they focus on staying alive first and foremost. They’re also just such a great team and it’s never more apparent than in this book. The amount that they rely on one another for morale shows how much they need each other.

The scene stealers of The House of Hades are Bob and Small Bob. Man, do I have serious Bob and Small Bob feels. So Bob is a titan who has, against all odds, ended up fighting against his mother, Gaea, and siding with Percabeth. The jaunt through Tartarus really forces Percy and Annabeth to consider their heroic quests from another angle. Yes, monsters are monsters, but it’s becoming more apparent that some of them really do have good sides.

The House of Hades was my favorite installment of The House of Olympus yet, but I’m hoping for more pain from the final book. If I’m lucky, Piper will die in chapter one. Everything wrapped up fairly neatly here and I’m hoping that nothing will be convenient about The Blood of Olympus. Heck, it has blood right there in the title. That bodes well, right?

The next book in the Heroes of Olympus series. This continues the journey of the heroes to fulfill the prophecy.

Percy and Annabeth must fight demons and monsters through the underworld. This journey is simply horrible! Especially as they continue to cross paths with creatures they have already killed. In the worst segment - they are cursed to relive each of the final curses of those they have killed! But, they also discover some reformed creature who sacrifice themselves to help the pair.

The other six heroes (Leo, Frank, Piper, Hazel, Jason and Nico) continue on the ship and each of them faces their own demons - for real! Frank grows up and accepts the burden of his own life, Nico admits his hidden secret to Jason, Leo falls in love and Hazel figures out the way to save them all.

Even though I am getting weary of waiting for the story to finish, this was a good installation. It moved the story along, but, of course it didn't finish. I continue to be amazed how Riordan so easily weaves myths into a current day story with it all making sense.

Now - I have to wait for the next one!

Annabeth and Percy are trapped in Tartarus. Desperate to survive, they make their way through Tartarus to the Doors of Death but the journey is perilous and full of hazards. Their friends Hazel, Nico, Frank, Jason, Leo, and Piper are trying to save them but time is not on their side –Gaea, the Earth mother will rise to power any day now and will destroy many lives if she does. Every single member of the group will struggle and many will learn lessons about love and sacrifice.

“The House of Hades” is the fourth and in many ways the most exciting book in Rick Riordan's The Heroes of Olympus series. I have to confess that, after five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and four books in the Heroes of Olympus series, I was afraid that the series would be getting a bit stale (after all how many quests can these kids go on?) but I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Annabeth and Percy's journey through Tartarus adds the most suspense to the book - it is a journey filled with danger and I could feel their pain and anguish as they traveled. While Percy and Anna Beth seemingly have the hardest battle, the others have their own trials and there is an unexpected revelation about one of the characters in the book. As always, there is a great deal of humor in the book, some of it quite subtle, which helps relieve the tension in the book. There is also some sadness and I did tear up a bit at the end of the book.

“The House of Hades” is an exciting read.

I am sad. Not for the characters, I believe that most will survive. I am sad because Riordan chose an easy path: political correctness.
everywhere I turn, I am confronted with an agenda. It's end game is the destruction of families and chaos. The LGBT agenda is not about rights, it is using broken people as pawns, reveling in their brokenness.
unfortunately, with this book, Rick has moved from a neutral stance, not talking about and even careful to tone down the sexuality and broken desires of the Greek and Romans, to a position of support and embracing as brave, those who give up the struggle against such desires.
By making a main character gay, he removed my ability to share these books with friends and my children. Their innocence is more valuable to me than his story.
    Sad, sad day.

fantastic work by rick Riordan. He did a fantastic job with this book. He mixed mythology with todays weird and cool ideas like a flying ship. This book includes romance, mystery, mythology, action and adventure. this book is so good you never want to put it down you just want to read it every where you go. You need to read the books before this in order to understand if you don't you will be clueless. if you love mythology and adventure you'll love this book.
its start out where they left of in book three Athena's mark Percy and Annabeth have just fell in to the dark depths of tartarus. while Percy and Annabeth our down there. Leo, Hazel, Jason, Frank, Nico, and Piper are weaving through difficult task like Percy and Annabeth. Hazel must learn to use the mist to control what her enemies see. Leo must guide the crew on his ship the Argo 2 to reach the doors of death where Percy and Annabeth will meet them. Jason must learn to be the caption in charge. while frank must master his ability to change in to different animals. Nico must reveal his little homosexual secret out to the crew. This was a fantastic book! Every character had a LOT of development and grew a great deal during the course of this book, and every change was true and realistic. It felt like growth, not something picked out of the air.

I enjoyed the parts with Jason, Hazel, Leo, Piper, Frank and Nico more than the parts with Percy and Annabeth. The Tartarus scenes were well written but felt to me very much like Sam and Frodo trekking through Mordor, and admit it, trekking just isn't that exciting.

As for Nico - I've heard people say that it destroyed his character and that they don't like him as a character anymore. This is ridiculous and bigoted. Nico is my favorite character in the series and has been since he was introduced. I think it makes a great deal of sense, and I am thrilled that Riordan took the step that even JK Rowling wouldn't by putting an explicitly gay character in a children's series. I loved that bit of devlopment, and to me it's just a little bit more explanation of why Nico is how he is.

The House of Hades takes place right where The Mark of Athena left us readers wondering what happens to Percy and Annabeth after their fall into Tartarus. Prior to reading this book I thought The Mark of Athena will be my favorite book but this one tops even the 3rd book. I really can't say anything else about this series except how great it is. I don't think Rick Riordan let up with how much obstacles Percy and Annabeth had gone through and now to go through the doors of death. The stakes are at the highest as the rest of the gang all race against time to help Percy and Annabeth close the doors of death and reach Gaia before she rises.

The most surprise of me in The House of Hades is the titan Bob and his supercat Small Bob. These two really grew on me and at the end of the book I was near tears when I knew where the author was going with them. I'm crossing my fingers by some miracle I'll see Bob and Small Bob again in the last book.

This is the 4th book in the blood of Olympus series by Rick Riodan. This book starts off where the third one "Mark of Athena" ends, with Percy and Annabeth falling into Tartarus, with Arachne. From there Percy and Annabeth have to make their way out of Tartarus with the help of Bob( Iapetus ) the Titan . Then they get help from Damesen, who helps them get out of Tartarus, and destroy the doors of death, and make it so other monsters can't get from Tartarus to the real world. When Annabeth and Percy get to the real world, Percy, Annabeth, Hazel, and Leo have to defeat the two hardest enemies that they have faced.

At the end of the last book Percy and Annabeth fell into a pit that dropped them into Tartarus, the horrible prison for the Titans. They are own a dark journey to find and close the Doors of Death and restore balance to the world. Traveling through Tartarus is exhausting and I felt weary right alongside them.

Meanwhile their friends encounter a strange bandit named Sciron, who kills his victims by making them wash his nasty feet and then kicking them off a cliff. They also travel to Venice to continue the work of the quest. One of the major plot points in this book is a big reveal from Nico, which explains quite a bit about his distant personality. I’d already heard about that part, so there was no surprise, but I still appreciated the importance of the revelation. I also loved the role that Cupid plays in this book.

BOTTOM LINE: As I’ve noted with almost all of Riordan’s books, I enjoy reading them, particularly on audio, but there’s never too much that sticks with me. I absolutely love learning more about the Greek and Roman mythology and seeing it worked into modern day situations, but I never find as much depth with the characters as I would like. I will definitely be finishing the series when it’s released.

If you like mythology of Roman and Greek culture with alot of action and adventure then this is the book series for you! This is book four of the second series of Percy Jackson. Everything is excellent in the book. All of the research is historically correct. All of the many god's and goddesses are excellently described so that you can just picture them in your head. The action scenes of killing monsters and fighting other demigod's (the mortal son or daughter of a god and a human.) are very good and detailed. I have nothing at all bad to day about this book.

You will need to read the first books in this series before you read this one. Because there are seven different stories of different kids AND there are seven different perspectives of all the characters in the book.

Annebeth and Percy have faced Dadalaus's Labyrinth, holding up the sky, and fought a titan lord but now they will have to endorse the worse place for demigods. Tatarous.
