I’ve been wanting to read more writing books for quite a while, but it’s been hard to actually get to reading them. When I saw this book recommended by an artist, I thought it might be good to read. I’ve heard of morning pages many times—in multiple places—but never really got what it was all about, what it was supposed to do, etc. When I realized that this book was what started that movement, to some extent, that got me even more interested!

I got to listen to the audiobook recently, and came away inspired but also somewhat conflicted.

There’s a lot of good in this book. I love the idea of a creative practice, such as journaling, being the inspiration that gets you moving on other creative projects. I also love the idea of artist’s dates—if we aren’t intentional about filling our bucket of joy and delight, it simply won’t happen. From a practical, yet creative standpoint, this book—and its weeks of practice and helpful essays—is gold.

Unfortunately, as a Christian, I struggled with one of the main tenets of this book. I knew going in that I might not agree with the spiritual element in this book, and unfortunately, I didn’t. There are some beautiful truths expressed in these essays, but they’re so mixed with a “make up your own god” philosophy that I couldn’t agree with what was being said. I found that disappointing. If you aren’t of a strong religious persuasion, I expect this aspect wouldn’t bother you, and even with it, I did find the book inspiring and helpful.

I started this in early October, determined to stick to the weekly habits and exercises. The reality was mixed levels of success in terms of my tenacity and appreciation for Cameron's methods.

Her two cornerstones are daily morning pages and a weekly artist's date. I did the morning pages in the morning for exactly one week, but couldn't sustain getting up at 5:30am to do them (she doesn't suggest a time, but this was my only window before getting ready for work). I was just too tired and it didn't seem the right time for me to get the best out of the exercise. So for a few weeks I stuck to it religiously in the evenings, but to be quite honest I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to be getting out of it. Whatever 'it' was, I wasn't feeling it. It also coincided with a very sad period for me, and I kept finding myself writing about that, which after a time wasn't what I wanted to be immersing myself in just before bedtime.

Probably up to around week 7 or 8 of the course I did many (but not all) of the exercises set for the week, and did find it particularly interesting to let my mind wander remembering things I used to enjoy doing but have stopped doing for no good reason, and things of interest which I've never tried. At times, though, particularly in the second half of the book, there seemed to be a bit of repetition around the theme of these, and some of them felt a bit 'cutesy' and not something I felt I'd benefit from doing. It was at this point that I felt the book was diverging from what I'd hoped to get out of it. Possibly more my issue than the book's, I hoped this book would help point me towards my real passion in life, but increasingly I got the sense that Cameron assumes you already know what your artistic talent is and that the point of the book is to help with creative blocks. My creative block is I can't get off the starting blocks and don't know if I even have any creative talent, not that a teacher when I was 7 critiqued me and negatively changed the path of my life forever.

But, I will give Cameron credit where it's due. Whilst I was religiously doing the exercises in the first few weeks of the course, I DID find myself becoming more interested in creative pursuits. I'd assumed that writing was the creative pursuit I wanted to develop when starting the book, but surprisingly (to me) I became less interested in writing and more interested in other artistic pursuits. I did some watercolour painting for the first time in decades, and a strange new interest in line drawing has emerged. I never knew it was something I was either interested in appreciating in others' work or that it was something I'd be interested in doing. So there must be something to Cameron's methods, as I don't think I'd have explored any of that without reading the book. I've also very quickly got out of the habit of doing these things in the last few weeks since stopping the evening pages and doing the exercises, so perhaps the key benefit of this book is that it's simply a habit that reminds you to take creative time out for yourself.

I'm not entirely sure why it has such a cult following. It's interesting at first, but I felt it goes over old ground after a time. Perhaps if you are already a fledgling film director / screenwriter / novelist / artist it gives you a kick up the backside, but I don't think it's necessarily the best book for someone who's actively trying to find their creativity.

3.5 stars - interesting, but a bit disappointing given the hype.

This is short, sweet, and to the point and full of good points. It's really more of a workbook though so I'll need to read it again and work through it more next time.

I am working through this book, again, as part of my newest foray into doing the The Artists Way, again. I'll be using this one, the Artist's Way Datebook, the Artist's Way Morning Pages, and the The Artist's Way Workbook. So don't be surprised if you see the whole set fly by here as I'm giving a cursory read an perusal over all of them before starting this up again in January.

The morning pages practice was the most amazing habit I gained from this creativity guide. So many profoundly perfect ideas and practices in this book that it takes time to do them all. And we learn by doing. Julia Cameron is the muse of creatives.

I probably shouldn't review this book because I only got a little over half-way done. I will finish it later. The reason I didn't finish was that I was struck at that point by an idea for a book I wanted to write and I have been researching the topic and taking notes ever since.

Whether or not The Artist's Way was the cause, the gates have been opened, so to speak, and ideas have been flooding for the past eight months. I'd like to think this book had something to do with it. I was following the exercises exactly.

At the time I began, I had a kind-of, sort-of plan for my future. This book seemed to solidify all the diverse, unconnected ideas I had floating around. I would recommend it to anyone who finds themselves "stuck" on what to do next, whether artistically or just in life. I believe it helped me get in touch with my deepest self. And I don't think that's a bad thing.

God truly does work in mysterious ways. How could I have know that the prayers called out (on the weekly prayer-line) in the name of Jesus, would be right in line with my reading of this book? The boogeymen of my past were called out, urging me to remember the hurtful words and rejection letters that caused me to put my writing on the back-burner. I am fortunate to have broken away from the crazy-makers in my life by going into seclusion a few years ago. As a do-good-er, my self imposed hiatus was met with loads of opposition – but I knew that I would die one day and with the kids all grown, it was time for me to go for my own gold.

Most artists have encountered criticism (constructive or otherwise) that results in squelching their sense of wonder and creativity. This book holds the key to recovering all that has been lost by harsh words, put-downs and having proverbial mud thrown in the face of our work. The book also contains exercise of healing that bring fruition to the dreams of doing the things that put our gifts and creative abilities to good use for the Glory of God.

On the flip-side, I was charged to recall all the supporter, encourages, up-lifters and genuine admirers of my workmanship. So many beautiful people whom I thank God for, as they understood and assisted my artistic growth.

Thanks to the wisdom imparted by the author, I have returned to my love of writing with much vigor and expectation of connecting with an appreciative audience.

So far I've found the insights that Cameron offers not all that useful, but it is interesting to do the exercises. She leans a little too often (imho) on religious overtones but that aspect doesn't dominate the book. Might end up in my DNF pile...

Julia Cameron’s classic, The Artist’s Way, combines a gently spiritual touch with a genuine understanding of human creativity—both our need to create and our frequent reluctance to commit. The author describes a “monk’s devotion to our work,” where “some … will be visited by visions and others will toil … knowing glory only at a distance,” offering practical and spiritual encouragement both together. Meanwhile the well-planned exercises she presents promote productivity and an ability to stop putting off what we long to do well.

The text is nicely laid out with luxurious white space accompanied by intriguing side-bar quotations from poets, theologians and more, each well-chosen to complement the chapter’s message. A pleasing mix of personal anecdote and well-researched, well-practiced teaching makes the book an enjoyable and valuable read, even for readers unwilling or unready to commit to the workbook lessons. Commitment, of course, will offer more. But readers who feel they haven’t got time might find themselves encouraged to creatively find some.

The author’s message of “morning pages” reminds me of morning prayer. The pages may even serve a similar function, inviting readers to release life’s imperfect, petty frustrations before the day begins, leaving our minds free to jump beyond the blocks that hold us back.

From “creativity contracts” to question and answer sessions, from faith in whatever we call God to faith in our own good, and from week to week of discovery and recovery, The Artist’s Way presents a convincing way of finding out what we want, moving forward to create what we want, and discovering fulfillment in that creativity. It’s a good read, a valuable resource, and an excellent program for artistic renewal.

Disclosure: It was a gift from a treasured artistic friend.

This book is the cure for unblocking creativity. It is imbued with deep spiritual wisdom coupled with practical tools, which if embraced, enable the artist in you to emerge. As a poet and author, I did not read this book because I am blocked. I did not consider myself blocked. Upon embarking on the book's activities: writing daily morning pages, and taking myself on a weekly artist's date, I soon realized I am indeed, a blocked creative. I could be much more prolific, but at times, hold myself back. Thank you Julia Cameron for the gifts you bring to our world.

I've had, I don't know, four copies maybe, of this book over the years. One fell apart, dog eared and tattered, the others were lost or lent and never came home.

I guess it's testimony to how good it is that I keep replacing it.

That said, I think this is a love or hate kind of affair. If you are aiming to spark creativity, of any kind, it's very well worth your time picking up from the library and finding out which camp you fall into.

(I read this because I've been doing morning pages for years. I see now why this is the only element of her process that has really been mainstreamed.)

The Artist's Way is a great book. I have read it through more then once but I have yet to complete the 12 weeks of the course.
It is a tool for the unblocking of artists of any kind. Which means that anyone with a interest in living life creatively would enjoy working though this book.
The staples of Julia Cameron's program are the Morning Pages and Artist's Dates. Both of which are well described in the beginning of the book and are used though out the 12 weeks of the program (and beyond if you are so inclined).
I feel that this book was written with a wide range of accessibility, and is a worth the time to work through, you will find it will change your life. I have found it has already, and I am still working though it.

This book is not just for artists. It is for anybody who wants to live their life more fully and creatively. I undertook the practical course offered in this book and experienced many breakthroughs. Although I no longer do the Morning Pages as prescribed by the author, I do my own version of them and continue to do many other things that were suggested. Whenever I recommend this book to others, they are always very grateful afterwards.

Subtitled "A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity", this book is about more than just art, and you don't need to be an artist to find something of value in it. That said - everyone can be creative, and thus an artist. And since creativity's opposite - destruction - is often the result of unchanneled energy, it is a healthy occupation for everyone working on discovering their own spirituality and intuition to create. This book helps you with that.

"The Artist's Way" covers a topic per week (or, per chapter), and covers subjects like recovering a sense of identity, power, integrity, abundance, connection, strength, autonomy, and many more. Each chapter gives you some theory, and a list of tasks to do that week, as well as a list of questions to see how it went.

Both for students of the Intuitive Arts and for other artists, this book offers a wonderful way to get in touch with the creative aspect of yourself, and to ask yourself some fundamental questions. It's also a lot of fun.

The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron, is far more new-agey and spiritually focused than anything I would normally gravitate toward, but part of my current self-exploration is to read and do things that in the past I would not normally have done. At this point, I have read through the entire book once and have just completed the first week of the twelve-week course. I have yet to see if it works for me. However, I can already tell that the two main principles - writing the daily morning pages and going on a weekly artist's date - could be very helpful.

I'll check back in after eleven more weeks to see how this worked for me.

I confess, I didn't do this as a twelve-week course. I tried a couple times, but realized that I was never going to be able to set aside three months for a self-guided class, so I went ahead and read it straight through. I suspect I waited too long, as I am not creatively blocked anymore. The ideas in the book are very good - the morning pages in particular are a useful habit to have. I wish there was a little less God talk, but the cover did warn me that this was a "spiritual journey" so I can't really complain. The thing is, so many of the things attributed to God don't have to be - for instance, unblocking your creativity doesn't necessarily mean that God's giving you more opportunities, just that you're more open to spotting and pursuing said chances. But anyway, if you want to be more creative and just can't seem to get yourself to do it, try this out. It certainly can't hurt.

The Artist's Way has a sometimes cult following, with many creatives attempting (but often not finishing, by the sounds of it) the twelve week programme to re-energise our creative beings. I attempted this in January 2008 with a small group of keen digital scrapbookers on an online community. By Week 6 only 3 remained, and I was one of them.

I found the author's style quite dry, and particularly hard to get into at first, but there was a lot to think about, and something that triggered most people into some kind of interpretation. I continue to use the Morning Pages concept most days (unless I'm writing fully that day) and some of the other exercises were very interesting.

I read the 1992 version when it arrived on bookstore shelves. I reread the 10th anniversary edition (I need not have spent the money) because I've joined a group specifically dedicated to remembering our creativity via The Artist's Way. This is the kind of book that has a lot of pages based on some (actually two) very concrete and concise ideas. There is no need for the length and semi-psychobabble beyond, perhaps, coercing the reader to actually practice what Cameron preaches. Reading the book is useless unless one puts it to practice. If nothing more, reading this book does inspire me to DO the two things (morning pages and artist dates) that she considers essential. And they are the only two reasons to read this book: to understand those two ideas and the importance of them. I can attest that when I did these things religiously, I felt more optimistic and more in control of my life, time and creativity. Hence, I was more productive in a huge variety of ways. There's something to this! Cameron admits that she doesn't know exactly why her method works, but this anniversary edition especially does seek to convince the new reader that it, in fact, does work. I wish there was less hoopla involved in discussing this method, fewer pages dedicated to finding yet another metaphor for the methods and more concrete examples of putting the ideas to practice. However, because of the very clear direction, there's no need. The ideas are covered completely in the much shorter companion workbook, so the bulk of this original manual is convincing readers that IT WORKS!

My other quibble is not at all with the book but with the multiple spin-offs this book has inspired/caused. There exists a date-book (do not bother) and a workbook (redundant but worth it for some exercises or instead of this book) and then come all sorts of spin-off books, the latest being a weight loss via morning pages manual. While I don't doubt that morning pages and good self-care (also stressed but nothing original) are helpful in weight loss, this screams "cash cow" to me. The basic two "commandments" remain the same: write morning pages every day and take yourself on the Artist's Date every week. Many have found that when you do these two relatively "simple" (but amazingly complex) things, MANY goals will come to light and be achieved. I think, perhaps, this basic book is all one really needs to learn the program.
