Wow! What an expansive story.
I really enjoyed the Kaladin storyline the most.
The writing was superb but the plot was written amongst different unrelated storylines until they merged toward the end.
It was very long and I lost interest at various portions because the story just rambled on.
If it weren't written so damn well I probably would have never finished. it. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Did I stay up far too late each night reading this? Yes I did. Did I pick it up at every opportunity throughout the day? Yes I did. To be honest I was n't expecting this to grab my attention as much as it did, but it was definitely worth it. Every. Single. Page. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

I’m glad I trust Sanderson. I feel the same way about Way of Kings Part I as I felt about the Mistborn series the first time I read it - I enjoyed reading it while it was in my hands but I almost dreaded picking it up because the story moves incredibly slowly. That said, I am looking forward to Part II. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

I think everything there is to say about this book has largely already been said. I've been putting off getting into the Stormlight Archive for a while just because of the sheer scale and scope of what it is intended to be and (to be honest) what it already is, but having finally taken the plunge in anticipation of the release of Rhythm of War in November, I can only say that it's certainly living up to what I expected it to be after this first book.
The Way of Kings is definitely not the fastest or action-packed book in the world, but if anything, that contributed rather than detracted from my appreciation of it. It is clear that Brandon Sanderson has put years of thought into the world of Roshar, the people and the creatures the inhabit it, their histories, cultures and philosophies, and the story that pulls them all together. It was extremely fulfilling to work through almost 1000 pages of slow and steady build-up, to have the final 200 pages round it all off with intense action, powerful plot twists, and meaningful revelations that at the same time manage to both tie off the book as its own opus, but also set up so much more for the rest of the series.
Over 2500 pages still stand between me and Rhythm of War, but if this continues (which by all accounts it does), I'll have no complaints. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

(EDIT 3-14-2013) This book is $2.99 in the major ebook stores for a limited time. Go get yours!
EDIT: After my re-read, once again I am blown away with how good this book was. I don't know if I will read again right before the next one comes out, but it is so good, I'm sure I will enjoy it just as much the 3rd time around.

This is classic epic fantasy at its best. As always, Mr. Sanderson does a great job with character and story development, and of course gives you a well-thought out world with a imaginative new magic system. IMO, this series has the potential to rival the appeal of LOTR.
As a reader I'm a little dismayed by the fact that there are supposed to be ten books in the series. So I guess that means hoping that at least a book a year gets published. I realize that you can't hurry creativity, but I REALLY hope that as readers, we don't get screwed like on the Clan of the Cave Bear or Game of Throne series. Due to Mr Sanderson's blog, I have a lot more faith in his ability to keep the ball rolling. In any case, I probably shouldn't paint this series with the failings of other series, but as a reader, my innocence is no more.
This book sort of stands on it's own. I don't consider the ending to be a cliffhanger, more of a revelation. It was totally fitting. I found the book to be a solid, and VERY good start to a series. The classic elements without being cliched, action, betrayal, religion, atheism, science, magic and mystery. Add great writing and you can't really ask for more. I'm eagerly looking for news on the next installments.
Oh, and may I suggest that you use your ereader for this series? Over 1000 pages? Way too big to carry around..... - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

This is an epic, that is for sure. I want to give it more stars because... damn. I would like to read the next one: I want to know what happens, I want to see where the characters go, etc. BUT: am I ready for another ~1000? I'm just not sure.
I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars. I want to give the 1 because of the sheer amount of world-building here. But... yeah, I'll give it the 4-stars. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Okay, so.
This book has sat at the top of my to-read list for several years. Seriously. My friends love it, the reviews screamed that it was insanely good. It really sat at the #1 position no matter how I ordered the stupid list. For years.
Maybe that's why I didn't read it. The expectations were too high. The book was too epic. I didn't want to get into another Game of Thrones where I'm waiting for the latest tome for years, and end up having to read several thousand pages to catch up on the story lines before the latest book comes out. I wonder if the whole series will hold up to the first book. I have to worry that the author will die before the dang series finishes.
Those last worries really don't apply to Sanderson, though; he's young, he's a writing machine, I can't imagine how he puts out the number of books he does a year without wearing his fingers down to nubs, most everything he writes is fantastic.
And so I finally embarked upon The Way of Kings.
It mostly held up to the hype. It definitely reads like Sanderson -- if you like him, you'll love this; if you don't, you won't. Simple as that. It's easily accessible language, great characterization, NO DANG CLIFFHANGERS AT THE END OF EVERY CHAPTER .. ahem. Actually, that last part is important. This book is good -- there's a good hook at the end of it, but not something that I'll be foaming at the mouth to read the next one about. And I can take a break before I jump into the next novel without freaking out that I'm going to lose the line of plot.
Either way, at the end of the book, I was repeatedly recommending it to my husband, who probably won't pick it up until the series is closer to completion. The journey was worth it -- just wishing I hadn't started it until it was finished either. ;) - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

As the intro to this series/world, there is a LOT to take in. We've got an on-going war, a slave who is part of that war but is developing magical powers, a girl who is trying to save her family, cryptic chapter headings ... I especially have enjoyed seeing how spren and crystals work and figuring out the big picture (spoiler - still have no idea). I really like the character development of the main characters. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Well, ok then. That took a couple of months. But it was a worthwhile couple of months. This is a big book, over 1,000 pages. Books this size always take me awhile because I do the majority of my "reading" via Audible.
Fantasy is not my go-to genre when I read. As fiction goes, I read mostly science fiction including some Star Trek and Star Wars books. Nothing wrong with Fantasy and my favorite is Tolkien but I connect more with SF.
For a couple of reasons I was reluctant to read this honestly. First, it is a huge book. A huge book in a huge series of huge books. This series is not anywhere near complete yet. I believe this is to be a 10 book series by Sanderson. Books 1 (this one) and book 2 are completed and the third comes out this fall. It will be a long trip for sure. I personally have never read a series as long as this. A trilogy or four/five banger is the max (Foundation books come to mind). Second, Sanderson is well know for his Mistborn series. I tried to read the first book in that series and abandoned it. Abandoning it was more a personal issue and nothing to do with the quality of the book. I just think at the time I started I expected one thing and it was something else entirely and that caused me to lose interest. I may try again at some point, who knows. But I was worried I would drift away during this one as well.
Now, concerning this book. Wow! comes to mind. The book follows 3 protagonists who are all different and we follow them during a time when a country has become somewhat stalemated in their ongoing battle with a foreign group. It is through these paths we learn about the world in which they live, how society and government works and how the mystical/magic comes into play.
There is a lot of depth to each of them and that contributes greatly to the size of the book. But that depth never seems to get bogged own or meander much from a greater story in which you are led. As I mentioned, I did this book mainly through audible and there were many parking garage and driveway moments in which I could not stop listening until I read a good point. Then after getting settled in home pulling out the Kindle and pushing on.
This is a good book and the high ratings it has received are justified. I have the next book in the series loaded up and ready to go but have not yet decided whether to start it now or do a shorter (500 page lol) science fiction book first as a break. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

I remember reading this before and being disappointed that there wasn't a definitive end, but now, knowing what to expect, I really enjoyed it. For this second reading I was reading it aloud to my kids (11 and 13), while simultaneously reading the newly released 4th book Rhythm of War. The amount of foreshadowing in this book is astounding. The kids loved it. It makes me laugh because they will throw out they will jokingly throw out a ridiculous prediction and a lot of the time they are at least partially correct. :). - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

It's rare that I agree so wholeheartedly with the general consensus on a book or writer, but I have to admit: Brandon Sanderson is one hell of a writer.
Way of Kings is almost an almost perfect epic fantasy. It manages to combine the grand, world spanning the events of Jordan the
political machinations of Martin, the adventure of Tolkien and the unique worldbuilding he's already known for; and yet this work is deeply original.
It's fast paced, exciting, and populated with well developed, complex characters. I could hardly stand to put it down.
My only qualm is a certain, shall we say, recurring awkwardness in gender relationships. The very stark division in roles for the genders portrayed here is interesting, and a bold attempt to address gender in fantasy...and yet, and yet, there is still this "women are unfathomable creatures" undercurrent that so often trips up men who try to write women characters. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Coming into this, I knew that Sanderson did awesome magic systems and fight scenes, and wasn't sure if he'd ever gotten to creating characters that weren't cardboard cutouts.
So a lot of his characters were better. Kaladin had hints of depth. I actually found Shallan pretty refreshing (and not nearly as annoying as Vin, since there wasn't a sudden discovery of girliness). But oh man those side characters. When they had a plot purpose and words to say they weren't too bad. But Tien. Ugh.
The POV changes didn't bother me too much, I think. Except again for the hating of everything to do with Tien, so I guess I dreaded chapters from Kaladin's past more than a year previous.
Sanderson still doesn't do introspection too well. I didn't buy all of the debates between Shallan and Jasnah, though I found the stuff about the founding of the world pretty cool. Dalinar in the first half was just annoying. Kaladin's depression felt more like BPD, though I admit I'm not familiar with that or PTSD.
The spren were my other hangup. They sounded super lame every time a new one was mentioned, but Sanderson mostly kept to a few spren that made sense.
Anyway, fights were pretty cool, I was interested in the implications of the world. It was a pretty enjoyable time overall, but I don't know when I'll get to the next book. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

This is probably the longest book I've ever read, 46 hours on audio, other than The Stand (which is 48 hours). Most fantasy novels are around 12-20 hours, I probably never would have actually "read" this book because it would have taken me 3 or 4 months to read it.
The writing was decent, especially the action scenes, the characters were realistic, the magic was cool, but it was just too damn long. I feel like he could have cut 400 pages (half) out of this and it would have been a much better book. Especially since this is a trilogy (or maybe longer).
I thought that the "bridge crews" thing was going to be temporary, like Conan growing up getting stronger and then it would move on to an "adventure", but that never happened. It turned into more of a "military fantasy", which I'm okay with, but not when it's the length of 3 normal novels.
Also usually when there are different main characters or groups of characters doing different things, they get approximately the same amount of "face time", but this seemed to totally forget about some of them for a long time (hundreds of pages) at the end, so much so that I thought their story was over. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Holy moly, I finally finished this. It took me so long! Mainly because I was only reading it at work when I worked Fridays upstairs. Also because I felt I needed the proper headspace to get into the world. Because this world is rather intricate and transporting.
I made a joke at one point while reading this that the book really started to get interesting at page 800. It was a good book to that point, but after that I almost couldn't stop reading it! I really have enjoyed how deeply involved the story is. These aren't just characters they are real people with histories and secrets and lives that mean something. I'm amazed.
Now let's see how many months it takes me to read book two! - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

I finally finished this! And I liked it. This book did take me a while to get through, mostly because there were long stretches where I didn't touch this at all. While I was reading I did really like this and the ending definitely had me hooked.
This book has all the things that makes fantasy seem intimidating to me: it's very long, it had a lot of POVs, there a lot of world-building happening, and more. However, once I got into this story, I didn't find any of this to be that intimidating (except for how long this was, that never stopped being intimidating). This story was written in a way that was very engaging. Even though this book is over 1200 pages long, I can't recall many moments where I was bored by the book, which is pretty impressive. Even though I do think this book is a bit stretched out, I was surprised by how little fluff there seemed to be in this very long book.
I think of all the perspectives in this book, Kaladin's was the most cliche and most similar to other fantasy stories. It was very easy for me to predict where his story would go, which wasn't the case for some of the other perspectives. Nevertheless, Kaladin was one of my favorite characters. I think I liked him partially because he was the one lower class character we got a perspective from and this is a perspective I really appreciate in fantasy stories. But I also just kind of like really cliche fantasy stories. I think they're fun! I also thought his perspective embodied a character that has experienced a lot of dark things but is also a good person and I love that type of character.
Dalinar also became one of my favorite characters for similar reasons. He wasn't at the beginning but his actions at the end made me really like his character. I think the most interesting plot points will come from the outcome of his decisions and I'm excited to see that.
This is a pretty sprawling plot but in some ways this felt solely like set-up for the rest of the series. I recognized that some of this is necessary in the start of a long fantasy series and as I said, this set-up never bored me. I did find that sometimes I figured out plot points long before the characters figured it out in a way that was more frustrating than interesting. This was especially a problem with Kaladin but showed up in a couple of places. Another thing that was probably more a problem with me taking to so long to read this than a book issue but I would forget certain characters. Like I reached a part at the end and when it said who's perspective would be in that section I was like "wait, who's Navani?" Again, I recognize most of that is a me issue but was also in part because this book was very long in a way I found to be unnecessary sometimes.
I don't want to compare this to the other long fantasy book I've read, Game of Thrones, too much because they're actually not that similar but I will say when I finished Game of Thrones I had no curiosity about what would happen next. I had no desire to read book two. When I go to the end of this book I needed to know what happened next! The last third of this book was especially excellent. I was so engaged the entire time. This is especially impressive to me because there were battle scenes, which I usually find very boring and hard to follow but I found them very easy to follow here. I'm still very intimidated by the length of the books in this series but I know I want to continue.
Reading this has really been a journey and a long time coming. I am very happy I finally finished this because I liked the last bit so much. I think now that most of the set up is done the books are just going to just get more interesting. Hopefully it won't take me 3/4 of a year to read the next book. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

I absolutely loved this book. I can't wait for the next in the series.
I bought it in hardback instead of on my kindle because I'd heard there were lots of maps in the print that were unreadable in the digital versions. Well, I think that sentiment is completely right, but it's more than maps. Character journals, sketches, and all sorts of things are spread in the pages. It's great to flip back to the awesome maps in the beginning too. It's certainly possible to enjoy the book without all the pictures, or to look them up online for reference. The book is really big and cumbersome too, so there's that to worry about. I guess if the worst thing you have to worry about with this book is what version to buy, that says something in itself. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

The massive Stormlight Archives series has been on my radar for years. I finally committed to tackling the first book. At more than 1,000 pages I hoped it would be worth the effort. I'll admit it takes quite a while to get into the rhythm of the novel.
The story rotates between the points of view of Kaladin (trained by his father as a surgeon, now a lowly soldier), Shallan (attempting to study under Jasnah, but secretly plotting to steal from her), Szeth (an assassin bound to serve his master), Dalinar Kholin (a warrior plagued by visions), and several other minor characters, who lead seemingly unconnected lives. There is a lot of battle scenes, which became tiresome. But I loved the character development in between those sections. Shallan's story was my favorite through most of the book. As the book went on I began to see the connections and all of the main characters became interesting. Halfway through I wasn't sure I was loving it, but by the end, I couldn't put it down.
The second book is even longer, but I'm looking forward to it now that I understand the complicated world and am already familiar with the characters. The author created a fascinating and layered epic fantasy world where politics are shady and alliances constantly shift. There is religion, morality, competition, class warfare, assassins, and so much more to discover. I'm hoping the farther I get into the series, the more I'll enjoy it. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Fantastically detailed worldbuilding. Very much an introduction to a world and series, a lot of ground-paving, and no real superlative characters, but highly enjoyable for those who like epic fantasy.
