I had trouble getting into this book for a long time, and was super busy, so I didn't really get rolling with it until I got away on a trip to go to my cousin's wedding in San Diego. Pretty sure I finished it right after I got back--can't quite remember.
Basically, though, although it was slow, it presented a lot of good questions and mysteries that kept it interesting.
The twist with the kandra was great.
I loved the theme throughout that how you present yourself is only a part of who you are. The clothes that you wear, the way that you carry yourself, can be a message to other people, but it can also influence how you feel about yourself--and yet it's not all of you. You can still have times when you feel unsure of yourself, but it's helpful not to dwell on it or project it. All of the lessons that Tindwyl taught Elend I think are helpful to anyone.
Vin also had a "heroine's journey" arc in this vein--she learned that she could enjoy being feminine in some ways and to accept that she wasn't just a killing machine. She also made some important decisions about why she was doing what she was doing--not just to protect Elend, but to serve the people.
Other information about the mist spirit, the Lord Ruler, etc. begins to be revealed in this book, but doesn't get fully explained until the final installment. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Once I finished the first book I needed to move on to this one. The story and the characters really dragged me into this world, at times it was slow, but the exciting bits made up for that. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Five stars,Five stars,Five stars!
Typical of a middle book in a series, there were a couple of spots where I thought the book lagged a bit, but overall, Sanderson did a masterful job of worldbuilding. My emotions got dragged all over the room and I was mentally exhausted, but happy at the end of the book.
On to the final book in the series.
I give this book my highest recommendation. Sanderson does Epic Fantasy with the best of them. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Continues on from where Mistborn: The Final Empire left off. Elend and Vin are left to deal with the aftermath of their defeat of the Lord Ruler, dealing both with internal politics in Luthadel and besieging armies.
Sanderson introduces more information about the Feruchemical powers that Sazed had. We learn more about the way that the power differs from Allomancy, as well as Vin's experiments with new Allomantic metals. Fighting and movement are as fluid as ever; the novel concept of Pushes and Pulls makes almost cinematic fight scenes possible. The level of excitement in the book is kept at a high, as the mysterious mists equivocate between help and danger and ancient legends of the Hero of Ages and the Well of Ascension are investigated.
I think that more so than in the first book, Sanderson displays his willingness to tackle more complicated issues than capers, albeit magical. We see the conflict of love and duty between Sazed and Tindwyl, and the importance of trust between Elend and Vin. Each member of the crew is given a distinctive story that deals with family, friendship, rebellion and deception. We also are prompted to consider aspects of politcal theory and theology as Elend and Sazed respectively try to tackle their respective challenges.
The Well of Ascension is a thrilling sequel to the first in this trilogy. I normally pride myself on working out plot twists while reading, but this book invites only pleasurable mystery. Highly recommended. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Please refer to my review of the first book in the trilogy, The Final Empire review, Well of Ascension picks up one year after the events of the first book, there will be spoilers in this review for that.
This book took control of my brain, or more specifically one character did. That of Elend's warlord wanna be king father Straff Venture. The man is a menace. I wanted to strangle him nearly every time he was mentioned or appeared. He is the foremost 'enemy' that the new ruler has to deal with. Not the only enemy, but certainly the most dangerous. With few exceptions he is a master manipulator (unfortunately those exceptions prove to be his downfall).
Like the first book each chapter begins with an excerpt from an ages dead person closely tied in with the Heroes of Ages mythos and the origins of the Lord Ruler's hold over the Final Empire. This time we see events from a Terrisman's viewpoint--that of the man who originally claimed Alendi as the Hero of Ages. Things are not so simple and quick readers will catch what the underlying issue is that caused the world so much grievance.
Compared to the first book this one has a great deal more action (though the first is no small amount). Vin is definitely coming into her own as a powerful Mistborn to be feared and respected--barely noticing as she surpasses even Kelsier in what she can accomplish--and with the city under siege from several enemies (within and without) she has plenty to keep her occupied. I liked her in this book better then the first. Though she spends a good deal of the book unsure of herself and her place, Vin remains certain of one thing: Elend was a good man who deserved to live.
Sanderson delves deeper also into what it means to overthrow a millennium long government--good or bad, evil or not the Lord Ruler was able to keep his people fed and sheltered from the cold. The skaa, the former slave class, struggles with the fact that they are free, but starving and Elend struggles with the moral choice: Is it better to have freedom and struggle to survive, or to be oppressed and have a chance to live?
I hope, mightily, that more is given about what really is the difference between the 'nobles' and the 'skaa' in the final book. The Lord Ruler's religion stated that the nobles were noble because they aided him in his quest. Since the Lord Ruler wasn't the Hero of Ages, and was in fact surrounded by Terrismen (the people who he was practically wiping out of existence) what was the truth?
Another thoroughly enthralling read, I'm going to see if I can take the third book, The Hero of Ages, out from the library since I really don't think I want to wait for the mass market paperback. - Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5

The characters in this book make me so angry. The Battle of Luthadel and onward are the only parts I enjoy. Four years after reading this book the first time did improve my opinion of it a little but not by much. Last time I was so angry that I never started the third book. Now, I'll finally read The Hero of Ages. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

i've finally come around to picking up this second book in the mistborn trilogy...a big part of the intimidation is the size of this tome. i need to be in a certain mood to tackle 700+ page books. i need not have worried though as this, like the first book, was a page turner!
vin quickly became one of my favorite heroines, and am very glad her story has continued to grow organically here. while the first book was a heist, this one was more an exposition on politics, war maneuverings, philosophy, and theology...and she fits perfectly well in both. that sounded boring, but sanderson has actually included a lot of twists, clever reveals, and lots of action to keep it from being so.
this was a really fun read. im thinking it will not be too long before i pick up the 3rd book. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Sanderson strikes again. Just like with the first Mistborn I struggled through the first 75% of the book before I started to get really into it. I have so much respect for the world-building and magic system here, so I’m not really sure why these books are such a struggle for me – it might be the audiobook narrator. But, just like before, I couldn’t put Ascension down for the last quarter of the book and I’m prepared to struggle through book #3 in anticipation of a solid ending. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

Considerably less exciting than Mistborn...mostly because it focuses on the inner world of Vin, and her insecurities and lack of self understanding aren't compelling enough to sustain a narrative of this length.
The overlaid story of armies NOT DOING ANYTHING for the majority of the book did not add much in terms of story pacing either.
Overall, this is a real Robert Jordan kind of book. Pointless maneuvering, lots of "girls are so confuuuuuusing!" nonsense, and a series of unsatisfying resolutions serve only to set up the third book.
The prose was even less polished than I'd expect from an accomplished author...Vin repeatedly self refers as an "urchin", for pete's sake.
A big old meh. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

These books are simply fantastic. Once I start reading one I can’t put it down. This was the second book of three and while in a lot of series that book is the weakest, that isn’t true in this case. Can’t wait to read the next one. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

Highlight: Loved the final set of endgame twists. Much like the first book he kept the tension and played with the existing cliche's and tropes.
What could have been improve: Zane, I didn't really buy into his decision making and motivations. It was a nice try but it seemed a bit rushed as a character
What was great: I really loved how he played out the idealistic 'hero king'. I think a lot of other fantasy books have let 'hero-kings' get away with a lot of fairly high-handed moralising and this brought it crashing back to ground in some ways. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

If you've read 'The Final Empire', you'll be familiar with the world and the main characters of this book. However, I do believe that you can enjoy and understand it even if you haven't read the first volume.
The world we got to know in the first book does no longer exist. Chaos rules, and our heroes are having a tough time trying to maintain order and justice. Vin, Elend, and the crew not only have to face the strange behaviour of the mists, but the siege of their city, as well as betrayal.
Vin desperately searches for the Well of Ascension, hoping that she can save the world -- but can she? And at what price?
I already noticed in the first volume, but didn't mention it there, but I like the word creations here.
Elemancy really hits the nail on the head. The name Elend is funny if you're a German speaker, cause Elend means misery. However, nomen is not omen in this case. :)
The narrator did a great job once again, I love his take on the various characters. The character of Breeze is particularly great, through the voice and intonation of the narrator. But all characters are great. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Wow this was really good, 4 1/2 stars half star better then "The Final Empire".
Vin acts as a hero like Frodo, yet by denying the power as Frodo did when he destroyed the one ring, Vin unleashes a terrible power that was so powerful that even when bound it was powerful enough to spread false prophesy, a false prophesy designed to release itself. Sazed has been tricked into delivering this prophesy, what was Marsh trying to do as he attempted to murder Sazed, had Sazed realized that he need to get Vin to accept the power? This is worthy of Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth"
This was just a terrific read and a wonderful ending that makes me want to start Book 3, right away. So as that's Sanderson's intent, I'll go along and start reading The Hero of Ages right now. Boy I hope it's as good as this was. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Vin has killed the Lord Ruler and Elend is now king, but assassins threaten peace, the freed people are starving and cold, and armies are camped around the city. Vin is still discovering her Mistborn abilities and Elend finds that a democratic rule is not as easy as portrayed in his books.
Sanderson has a wonderful way of depicting fights using Mistborn powers; I twist myself up in my chair as I envision the different positions of Pulling or Pushing as combat ensues. I really enjoy the world-building and lore, and I appreciate that it's not just dumped, but shown.
Every character is interesting with fleshed-out backgrounds and growth. There are lots of twists that contribute to the reader's enjoyment. I really love these books and I'm still wondering why I haven't read them earlier in my life. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

About a year after overthrowing the Lord Ruler, the remaining crew that Kelsier left behind struggles to maintain their control over Luthadel. Elend, the starry-eyed dreamer of a noble now king, isn't a strong leader and has set up a government leaving an in-fighting Assembly with a lot of power. Then, an army gets ready to invade: Elend's father, Straff. Vin, meanwhile, is out patrolling the city and trying to keep Elend safe from assassins, when she meets a fellow Mistborn who sows doubt that she might just be a tool.
I really enjoyed my first foray into Sanderson's works with Mistborn, and the second book in the series did not disappoint. It was great to reacquaint myself with Elend and Vin, Sazed, and the rest. Most of the action centers on Elend and Vin, with a little more on Sazed. More of the mythology of the Deepness and the Hero of Ages is explored, and the end left with a most annoying cliffhanger knowing that there was more that the Terrismen didn't know about the prophecies. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes next. - Calificación: 1 de 5 estrellas1/5

Okey, so... short version (without spoilers): it was slower than the first one, but I loved it!
Now, the long version with spoilers(?
This one had a lot more politics than the first one, and it's logical since the Lord Ruler fell and Elend replace him as king. The fall of an empire is never easy: the political, social, religious and economic aspects were all explored in the book with different attention and I appreciate that. I liked it even if that made the reading slow at moments. I don't know if it's actually true, but I felt like there were less action in this one, idk. But the actions scenes were great, like always with Sanderson. I really like the way he writes them.
For the characters... i still love Vin, Elend and Sazed. I loved seeing the diferent moments from their perspectives and I also enjoyed Breeze perspective. For the new characters... Zane was really interesting and I kind of figure out that the voice he heard had to do with the Well. Tindwyl was cool, the romance with Sazed is really cute and also very sad. I wasn't shocked by her dead, I saw it coming, but still made me sad for Sazed.
The Kandra character was also one that I enjoyed. It was cute at moments... and I wasn't expecting him to be the spy and it had a cool revelation. I wonder if he's going to return in book three... it would be fun to see him again.
The final battle was really epic. The Koloss were creepy and a powerful enemy and I honestly thought everyone was going to die before Vin showed up. Seeing ferruchemist used for a battle that large was great, I loved it. I also loved the new metal introduced but was expecting more than one... the table at the end of the book lied(?
All the mistery with the Well, the Depness and the Hero was really cool and I loved it. I had so many theories while reading and that made it more fun to read thought it. At first I thought the Mist Spirit and the voice were the same, but close to the end I started to doubt that... and then when Sazed read that passage about the Holy First Witness that wasn't there before I knew something was wrong... very wrong... and again, I feared everyone was going to die XD glad they didn't.
For Elend gaining powers... well, I kind of expected him to snap the whole book lol every time there was a battle I thought Elend was going to be caught in the middle and snap... glad that in the end he gained the powers thanks to the Well... and Mistborn of all things! The third book is going to be intense!
I basically can't wait to read the next one, but first I want to finish some other books that I have started so I'll have to. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

It has been over a year since I read the first book in the series, The Final Empire, so it took me a while to get back into the story. This book picks up a year later when Luthadel is in political turmoil. The city is also under siege by three armies. There is a lot of political posturing going on while the author does further character development and the characters consider their options. This is short for not a lot of action.
I didn’t mind that the pace was slow in the first half or so of the book. There was some plot reveals and a lot of character development to sustain me until things started to pick up. Once the action got moving I was drawn in and could not put the book down. I was surprised by some of the turn of events and I am looking forward to reading book three. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

A few flaws aside, The Well of Ascension continues the great read from the first novel. Vin and the crew are left without Kelsier's leadership in the instability created by the Lord Ruler's death. Elend has taken the throne in Luthadel, and is setting up a government that places checks on a king's power.
Most of the plot is a standoff between the fledgling kingdom and its enemies camped just outside, primed to invade. Elend has a plan to come out on top using a bit of deception, but a spy in his ranks makes his planning even more risky. This standoff creates a sense of urgency among the main crew, with a healthy dose of caution knowing they are the weakest faction. During all of this, Vin wonders about what the Lord Ruler said with his dying breath.
Sazed gets some much needed time and development, which also expands the reader's knowledge of the world. Writings found early on expand on the history of Alendi and the prophecies surrounding him. The answers to what happened and why are revealed at the end, leaving us with a cliffhanger.
The main flaw was the romance between Elend and Vin, specifically their constant doubts that they should be together. It made sense in context, especially with someone deliberately trying to drive a wedge between them, but it felt like it dragged the story sometimes. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

I guess this book was about the development of a king, and I just did not have time for that.
Or wait, I did.
I guess this book was about the development of a mistborn / crew leader, and I just did not have time for that.
Oh, I guess that was ok too.
I guess this book was about political tensions between kingdoms and a kingdom born....
Ok no wait. What was all the stuff about how Vin and Elend weren't good enough for one another?
It was annoying is what it was. It suited neither one of them in the least and I just wanted the charming Elend who knew exactly how to confidently outsmart his father all his life but could also charm the pants off a smart thief used to being on her own--also the sharp girl who's learning about loyalty but knows she's totally earned his back.
And that was like a third of the novel. Elend's insecurity worked for me not at all. I don't know why, but not at all. And their relationship, egh. Sanderson should stick to fantasy because the romance was aggravating as all hell. I'm not saying he's not got romantic notions, I quite enjoyed that in the past, between Kelsier & his devotion to Mare, and Vin and Elend's connection...
But way too much of a focus, and it was weak. And hello, I say that as someone who reads 95% romance. Or maybe that's the problem
Maybe all this points out to me is the reason that I long used to reject romance. So often when it's attempted in the space of another genre, it is sadly lacking depth and a life of its own. It's weak and makes me scoff. Even in the hands of a very capable author like Sanderson. This swallowed so much of this book. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

Well written, but a bit of a filler story. There are some good elements to it - the challenge of translating philosophical theory to a real society, exploring what makes a ruler, and the deepening of the fantastical world post the Last Empire. But a bit too much angst from Vin / Elend for my liking. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Gosh, I absolutely love the descriptions of Vin using Allomancy, in fighting and everyday life, or as everyday as a city under siege can be.
So, I usually avoid specific details, but there was one thing that bugged me in the second half of the novel. I liked Zane, a newcomer on the scene, as a character, but I would have appreciated a bit more (meaning quite a lot more) development of the voice he hears in his head. - Calificación: 2 de 5 estrellas2/5

I wasn't terribly impressed with the first book in this series but, since so many readers love this author, I tried another one. Still not impressed. Especially without Kell's humor, this overlong story is tedious and inconsistent.
