The Georgetown Americas Institute’s Latin America in the Global Economy(LAGE) program engages experts in academia, government, the private sector, and civil society in events and panels to advance research and promote dialogue around the most critical economic challenges facing the region. During summer 2023, the GAI is hosting three events that bring together policymakers and other experts to discuss the growing trend of nearshoring investments in North America, particularly in Mexico. The country has seen a substantial increase in investment inflows in the past two years, receiving 35 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, and in the first quarter of 2023, the amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) was 18 billion U.S. dollars.Panelists will seek to answer questions on how nearshoring can enhance Mexico’s competitiveness and foster economic growth in North America and what domestic policies Mexico must implement in order to keep the investments going into the country. Participants will have the opportunity to hear success stories from companies that have implemented nearshoring strategies and learn best practices that local governments are deploying to help companies navigate these associated complexities.
