Born in Massachusetts, she grew up in Burlington, Vermont, earning her degree in history from Trinity College of Vermont in 1996. After several years in Sedona, Arizona, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 2001, where she and her husband Doug still live today. She has seen the book business from several different sides, from her first "real" job as a cashier in a friend's used-book store, to librarian at the University of Vermont and the Sedona Public Library, to a directory manager at the Philosophy Documentation Center in Charlottesville. Her career in writing began with an impassioned letter to the editor of the Burlington Free Press at the age of 7, and continues today as a frequent contributor the Vermont Woman Magazine and a variety of encyclopedias and books geared to young adults.
