He was Professor of History at the University of Aberdeen where a prize is awarded each year in his name. He was the author of The Reign of Elizabeth, 1558-1603, which was published in 1936 as Volume 8 of The Oxford History of England series. His 1926 work The Art of History, though now superseded, was the first important scholarly consideration of Enlightenment historiography of the twentieth century. Black passed away in 1964.ver menos
