I wanted to love this one more than I did. Tress was such a delight, and this one was very original, but with a different tone. Yumi and the painter find their souls unexpectedly tethered together. As nightmare creatures creep through the city, and they must learn how to fight them. They also need to learn how to depend on others and explore their own passions and freedoms. The book dragged, but I did love the illustrations and the concept.

Great book. Really hit with the emotions of the characters and the situation they were in. Definitely of of Sanderson's best.

So, I finished this book in essentially 2 days. While that was partially thanks to finally having a solid extended period of reading time while journeying halfway down the length of the UK by rail, it was also because Yumi and the Nightmare Painter was truly quite enthralling, and almost resulted in me missing my train stop.

While I don't think this book is particularly groundbreaking in any particular respect, I feel like I was drawn in by every element, from the vivid and creative worlds and the characterisation of Yumi and Painter, to the coalescing plot and the themes that brought it to its climax. What was especially powerful to me was Sanderson's use of perspective in the storytelling, which felt grounded while at the same time showing how meaningful it can be to see things from another's eyes. This is really a book of contrasts, and the way that Sanderson was able to balance opposing worlds, seemingly incompatible attitudes, different cultures, and changes in tone from levity and seriousness, was quite masterful. Add to this the very strong emotional payoffs in the final quarter and some of Sanderson's best prose, and it's really hard to ask for much more.

Admittedly it wasn't all perfect - there is an explanatory info dump towards the end of the book which I didn't feel was completely necessary and interrupted the flow of the story somewhat, and it's certainly arguable if the conclusion would have been more impactful without the final scene for Yumi and Painter, but ultimately I don't think these detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I believe Sanderson has said this was his personal favourite of his Secret Projects, and I'm so far in agreement. Highly recommended for any fantasy, anime or character-driven fans - definitely in my top tier of Sanderson books.

As I often find with Sanderson this was just OK. I found the beginning a struggle but it did improve a lot after the first half. It was entertaining enough for me but that's all.

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter is the third of Brandon Sanderson's Secret Projects and is another tale in the Cosmere. Before digging in to read the book I flipped through to check out the art, which appeared to be Japanese/anime inspired. Turns out I guessed correctly though I'm not familiar with the inspirations used for this story.

Two main characters, two worlds, one story. Yumi lives in a land of sun and heat, where the people request help from spirits for their daily living needs. Painter lives in a world of twilight and neon energy, where the occasional nightmare comes to life to feed on unsuspecting sleepers. Through a seeming quirk of fate Yumi and Painter find their lives are crossed as each begins to experience the other's world and start to understand the mystery of what's really going on.

I found Yumi to be a highly enjoyable read. Such a sweet story about art, friendship, a slow burn romance, spirits and saving a planet. And Hoid, of course. I am really enjoying Hoids voice in telling this story and Tress though it was more muted in this installment. I hope there's more stories told by Hoid in the future.

This was a very different style from Sanderson's other work. I ended up liking both Yumi and Painter very much. Yumi is an interesting mix of sweet and sternly disciplined while Painter is seemly the goof off yet highly talented artist. Their relationship was a joy to read and shows how much Sanderson has grown in the romance department. The resolution to their story even brought a tear to my as it felt so perfect for these characters.

I can say that while I was on the right track to solving the mystery, I was also very very wrong! The Cosmere references I picked up on were minimal. I really need to read Stormlight Archive. I feel like I've said that a lot this year.

The third in the secret novel series from Brandon Sanderson comes richly illustrated and the hardback has a nice embossed cover. This story, while fantastic, is one of the slowest starters for Mr. Sanderson. However, the reveals towards the end of the story are well worth the wait, along with some interesting information on one of the most unique character in the entire Cosmere universe, Hoid.

Two individuals must deal with the spirits in two different ways as one must be creative to get their attention to ask for help while the other must search for them before they attack the residents of his city, but what if they switched places? Yumi and the Nightmare Painter is a standalone Cosmere novel by Brandon Sanderson that sees the action take place in a never-before-seen corner of his universe.

It all begins with a spirit asking for help from Yumi and teams her up with Painter, the problem they’re in each other’s bodies—well sort of—and must learn each other’s skills when dealing with spirits as well as figure out why the spirit needs help. Hoid narrates this standalone novel but does take part in the action until the book’s denouement, and because of this the prose was engaging and as always Sanderson’s climax is a highlight. However, there was something that just did not hook me as there were days I didn’t pick up the book because I didn’t feel the urge to keep reading until the last third of the book when it was hard to put down. Honestly, I can’t really figure out why as both titular characters were great and the worldbuilding was spot on, so it was either the romance subplot or maybe one of the characters must endure a monotonous routine every time they go to the other’s place. Whatever the issue I had influenced this review and thus relates only to myself.

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter has two very well written characters, Sanderson quality worldbuilding, and a fantastic climax. Yet for whatever reason there was something in this standalone novel that just did not click with me.

Well done. Yumi is a yoki-hojo, summoner of spirits which nourish the land. She lives in servitude to the people and the society in which she lives. Nikaro is a nightmare painter. His job is to roam the streets at night and paint away the nightmares that suck on people's soul. When Yumi is asked by the spirits to free them, something happens connecting Yumi to Painter and the most unconventional of relationships occur where Yumi enters Painter's world and learns freedom to choose, and Painter enters Yumi's world and learns discipline and truth. Of course, saving both their worlds is part of the end game.

Fairly good cosmere book with a completely new setting and very well done main characters. Some of the magic/science was covered a bit too quickly and the narrator was a bit too present, but overall quite enjoyable.
